As with our last production piece (the music poster) YOU CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE STYLE MODEL and UPLOAD IT TO OUR MEDIA BLOG (you may need to photograph the style model using your camera phone and upload it to the blog as a small file image jpeg).
Your style must come from either The Daily Mail OR The i
ALL MATERIAL THAT YOUR PRODUCE MUST BE ORIGINAL
2. Prepare
Choose an appropriate style model
Think about what it is you are trying to produce.
Think about the focus and theme of your product – what exactly are you making?
In particular:
How many stories are there on the double page?
Which is the most important story?
How is each story laid out?
How are all of the stories laid out as a whole?
Think about the rule of 3’s (it is a magic number) or is it a rule of 4?
What photographs and other images are used?
What size are the photographs and images?
What kind of headlines are used?
What kind of vocabulary and language is used in each article?
How long is each article?
The key is TO DO YOUR RESEARCH . . . and THINK CAREFULLY . . . and LOOK IN CLOSE DETAIL
Importantly – how can you replicate the content of your style model into your own production? THINK CAREFULLY . . . ACT CREATIVELY
2. Produce
All of your content must be original,
Write all of your copy as (unformatted) word documents
All of your photographs must be original and high quality
Keep everything in a folder on your M drive
Layout using Adobe InDesign
Make sure your technology works (school log-on, Adobe Creative Suite – both in school and at home)
Follow your style model for guidance – particularly in terms of the graphic elements – lines, shapes, colours, small details etc
Save any work you produce in a single folder (call it induction work) this folder should be created on your M Drive – organising your work is really important, as is keeping a back-up. If you lose your work you will have to start all over again from the beginning.
Taking some original photographs
Get into the habit of taking high quality, ORIGINAL photographs.
Original images will increase the quality of your work and give you higher marks.
Choose stories that enable you to take original images
Look at the type of images used in your style model – THINK about how you could replicate them? If not, choose another story / image.
Make sure you save your photographs along with your other work in your own folder on the M Drive. Organising your work is really important, as is keeping a back-up. If you lose your work you will have to start all over again from the beginning.
Processing your Photograph
Note that most images in newspapers are not processed (too much). As they are trying to convey a sense of realism and not artifice / artificiality.
Some layout suggestions / feedback
Publishing
This is a print product, so print it out TO THE CORRECT SIZE – most broadsheet newspapers are bigger than A4 so use the A3 printer to make sure you work is the correct size.
Make sure your the file that you print out is save to a HIGH RESOLUTION jpeg to ensure high quality.
Also, save your digital file as a low resolution file (jpeg) which you can upload to the blog
REMEMBER THAT YOU WILL NEED TO EXPORT YOUR INDESIGN FILE AS A JPEG FOR PRINTING / PUBLISHING
If you have created a single double page spread (ie an A2 size document) you will need to export from Indesign as a JPEG > open up in Photoshop > cut page 1 (and save) / cut page 2 (and save) > and then print out each page separately on A3 paper.
Let’s spend some time looking at all of the productions and asssessing them – using the assessment criteria that we have looked at before (see another link below)
Write in your note-book some reflections of how you can improve your work for next time.
