Bonnie and Clyde casting

Gene Hackman who played Cylde’s brother in the film was already a star at the time and stared in movies such as the downhill racer, superman and no way out.

Warren Beatty who played main character Clyde was chosen for the role Due to his past movies like Bugsy.

Faye Dunnaway who played Bonnie stared in movies such as the happening and Hurry sundown and was most likely chosen for the role due to her natural beauty.

The French new wave

The French new wave is a French art movement that emerged in the late 1950’s. It rejected traditional film making conventions in favour of experimentation and a spirit of iconoclasm.

There is elements of realism, subjectivity, and authorial commentary

Arthur Penn was inspired by French new wave directors like Jean-Luc Goadard and Francois Truffaut. I think this was the case because he wished to change the style of films at the time.

New Hollywood questions

1)The term New Hollywood means cinema from the 1960’s where the creative aspect of films shifted from the studio to the director.

2) Some famous films from this era include Bonney and Clyde, Midnight cowboy and The Graduate.

Some famous actors included Woody Allen, Karen Black, Timothy Bottoms and Ned Beatty.

Famous directors of the era where names such as Hal Ashby, John Badham and the previously mentioned Woody Allen.

3)During this era, the Vietnam war was going on. The civil rights movement was also going on at this time.

Casablanca aesthetics

Realism: A good example of Realism in Casablanca is the setting. Since it is set in 1942 during WW2. There is stress between character wondering if the island is safe and whether or not they should move to America where it is safe

Tone: The tone of the film is a serious drama with lots of high stakes and Serious moments. A good example is the climax scene where Rick tell IIla to get on the plane and leave him behind, the scene is very emotional.

Visual Style: The film is of the style of Film Noir which is a style of filmmaking that has cynical heroes, stark lighting effects, use of flashbacks, intricate plots and and underlying existentialist philosophy.

Casablanca sound

A good example of Diegetic sound in Casablanca is when IIla ask Sam to play the song ” As Time goes by” as it is a significant moment in the film.

A example of how Non Diegetic is when Yvonne is kicked out of the Bar and her words don’t match her lips. Another example is in an earlier scene where the gun shots plays and he falls to the ground 5 second later.

Casablanca Editing

Editing: I believe that Casablanca uses Continuity editing as a way to create a steady flow within the film.

An example of this is the plane scene at the beginning of the film. It uses a Mid shot to make the plane the focal point

Below is a medium shot of the people in the Café. It is shown like this to immerse you in the world from the view of someone in the café.

This is a medium shot of people viewing the plane landing. The shot tracks to show all the reactions

This is a close up shot of IIsla Lund to show her reaction and emotion

Below is a similar close up of Rick to show his emotions he’s feeling.

Casablanca questions

  1. Humphrey bogart was in movies such as the Maltese falcon, Black legion, Marked Woman, Dead end and many other movies. He had a great relation ship with Warner Bros studios and was often picked for movies due to his gentlemanly behaviour and his professional and cool nature.
  2. Ingrid Bergman has appeared in movies such as Adam has four sons, Rage in heaven, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. At the time when Casablanca was released she had a pretty good relationship with Hollywood, however in 1950 she left Hollywood due to an affair with Rossellini which led to US politicians throwing her out of the country.
  3. Paul Henroid had appeared in movies like For Men Only, Live fast Die young and Girls on the loose. He had a decent relationship with Hollywood until he was blacklisted by the five major studious for five years and he never understood why.
  4. Conrad Veidt was a German born actor who escaped Germany to become an actor in America. The directors of the movie chose him to play the role of a German officer as he can create an authentic character to play the role. He often plays villains such as his role in The Man Who Laughs. He had a good relationship with Hollywood and was famous before Casablanca and I think he was cast for the movie due to his recognition from the audience.
  5. Peter Lorre was very famous before Casablanca and starred in a lot of horror movies. He was cast for these kind of roles due to looking undesirable which is shown in his role in Casablanca where he plays a supportive character who doesn’t contribute much to the movie. Movies he appeared in was M, The Maltese falcon, The man who knew too much and Mad Love.
  6. Dooley Wilson Appeared in a few movies before Casablanca such as Cairo and Take a letter Darling. He was chosen for his role in Casablanca due to upbeat and happy nature which fits his role as Sam in the movie. He gained more notoriety after the release of Casablanca and starred in a lot of movies.

Casablanca first response

I think that Casablanca was overall 4/10. It had good qualities such as good musical score, set design and sound effects. It also looked very good for its time. However i thought the film was slow paced and boring at times. Nothing major happened until the second half of the film. A memorable scene of the movie is when Rick pulls a gun on the officer as it is a shock to the audience.
