Narrative Theory Task

Todorov’s equilibrium- Todorov’s theory states that all narratives contain equilibrium, disequilibrium, recognition, resolution and new equilibrium. What this meant was that narratives are conditioned around the character and events surrounding theme are started due to an equilibrium.

Propp Spheres of Action- Propp’s theorized that characters within a narrative are driven through their action types and function within a story, Such as a hero, villain, helpers, sidekicks etc.

Levi Strauss Binary Oppositions- His theory states that the majority of narratives contain opposing main characters, such as with Hero’s and Villains’s, the opposition between the 2 thickening the plot and further the narrative.

Barthes Narrative Codes- Barthes theory of narrative codes identifies 5 different kinds of semiotic elements. These 5 codes are Hermetic, Prosthetic, semantic, symbolic and cultural.

Vogler/Campbell hero journey- This theory states that a hero ventures fourth into a common world into to an extraordinary world with eh story ending back where it began.

Key messages and Values in Joker and Moonlight

Moonlight

A key message in moonlight showcasing the suffering those in the lower class have to go through. For example Shyrones childhood neglect from his mother spreading throughout the film and her only caring about him for his money.

Joker

A key message in joker is the societal prejudice against those with physical and mental disability’s. We see this for example with main character’s Arthur being judged and neglected by society due to his mental illness. There is also a minor character with dwarfism who’s job is working at a clown business and is made fun of by his associates for his disability.

Bonnie and Clyde Context

Bonnie and Clyde was produced and released to the public in 1967. During this time many major world events were taking place that influenced the films production and the things they put in the movie. One of these factors was the Vietnam war which majorly influenced the ideas in the film like patriotism for American citizens and the showcase of hippies and other outlaws. The civil rights movement was also ongoing at this time which caused major civil unrest and limited black people’s roles in the film to minor parts in the film.

Narration devices defintion

Narration/untrustworthy narrator- a untrustworthy storyteller, most often used in narratives with a first person point of view

Backstory-a history or background created for a fictional character in a film or television programme

Flashback/Flashforward- They take a viewer from current moment to past or future time then return them to the current time.

Linear Plot- A linear plot has a beginning middle and end and is constructed chronologically.

Ellipsis- the narrative device of omitting a portion of the sequence events, allowing the reader to fill in the narrative gaps.

Framing Device- Provides structure and context for the central story.

Cliff-hanger- Ends a section of a story or ends the story with a complete dramatic question.

McGuffin- a plot device used in films or books that sets the characters into motion and drives the story.

Foreshadowing- a warning or indication of a future event within the story.

Alignment- The correct positioning of something.

Causality- an influence by which one event process state or object contributes to the production of another event.

Narrative Hook- the technique in the opening of a story that hooks the viewers attention so that they stay interested.

Plot Twist- A technique used that introduces a radical change in direction or expected outcome of the plot in a work of fiction.

Narrative Tasks

Narrative – The structural framework of a movie, aka how the movie goes from the beginning to middle to end following a plot and story which unfold.

Levi Straus Binary Opposition– A theory that states the majority of narratives in media forms such as books and film contain opposing main characters.

Todorov’s equilibrium– a balanced state in which opposing forces are not in confrontation.

Propp spheres of Action– stories are character driven and that plots develop from the decisions and actions of characters and how they function in a story.

Vogler/Campbell hero’s journey-the hero is living in a so called ordinary world when he receives a call to a adventure.

Barthes Narrative Codes– His narrative codes include proairetic, hermeneutic, sermanti, symbolic and cultural codes.

Bonnie and Clyde Editing

Bonnie and Clyde’s editing style is unique from other films in its era due to its fast paced energetic scenes and action. Its editing reflects this with many quick cuts, zoom in’s and unstable handheld camera movements.

Medium shot- This Medium shot presents the dead body of Bonnie after the police have a shootout. This scenes editing has rapid cuts and shaking camera to convey the chaos of the shootout and the camera only stills when we see the remains of Bonnie and Clyde.

Wide shot- This shot is static held and is a clear divergence from the regular hand held camera movements. This is because they are trying to convey the more tame nature of the scene at this point in the film.

Medium close up- This shot is also a handheld camera shot as it is a less energetic scene in comparison to the more energetic shootout scenes.

Critical debates vs the expressive questions -Josh Wright

What is your understanding of a realist mode of film making? Can you think of an example from a film we have watched.

The realist mode of film making is expressing an idea of a film without the use of dramatization and stylization. An example of this is This is England with its kitchen sink realism used to present its story and characters.

What is your understanding of an expressive mode of filmmaking? can you think of examples of films that are expressive.

The expressive mode of film making is expressing’s ideas in the film with an over the top nature and over dramatic tone. A good example of this is Bonnie and Clyde with the overtop energetic shootout scenes. Trainspotting also makes use of the expressionism movement and makes many over the top scenes presenting the effects of drugs.

To what extent does Einsenteisn work merge the two ideas and how does he do this in Strike

Eistenetin merges the two so he can create points for the audience but still keep its realism but use the expressionism to capture the audiences attention. An example of expressionism is the scenes with the chained up bears as this is used to present the real issue of animal cruelty. An example of realism in the film is the poor treatment of workers.

Bonnie and Clyde Sound task

Non Diegetic: An example of this is the film is whenever western themed music plays during action scenes such as banjos.

Diegetic: An example of this is gunfire and bullets bouncing off off surfaces.

Sound Mixing

The sound of gunfire was added in post production due to the danger of using live rounds on set.

Dialogue

Clyde’s dialogue in the scene where he is talking to the farmers says the quote ” We rob banks” in a casual meaner showing his personality of being careless.

Underscoring

The scene where Bonnie wishes to return to her mother has an emotional underscoring. There is a lack of underscoring in Bonnie and Clyde’s death scene.

Five Methods of Montaging task.

Rhythmic Montage: A good example of a rhythmic montage scene is in the film Scarface (1983) with the montage that shows the characters making money. It uses the song Push it to the Limit and there is cuts that happen on the beat.

Tonal Editing Method: Rocky IV’s montage scene features the style of Metric Editing and creates the tempo of the scene. There is a large contrast between Rocky and Ivan’s training and we see this through the lighting and colour scheme of the areas they train in.

metric montage : The opening scene to hot fuzz (2007) creates the tempo of the film.
