joker first response

In my opinion I would give the film a 10/10

A memorable scene for me was when Joker stands Infront of the crowd and smears the blood on his face into a smile as he turns to face them, shows dramatic effect because hes displaying the character himself instead of having to paint on his smile, he uses a more permanent part of himself.

What makes a good film?

There are many factors that go into making a good film, using a range of micro elements and macro elements can help improve the quality of the film and make it more enticing for viewers.

You can start by breaking down films into broad elements. One of them being the macro (big) elements, referring to genre, character, story, and plot. It is essential for a film to have a genre as they are the baseline for the whole film. The genre of a film is a stylistic or thematic category of a film based on emotional response, aesthetic, or the narrative elements. films being separated into genres can help the viewers get an idea of the theme of the movie, it also helps give a sense of direction for the overall feel of the film. The characters of the film plays a crucial role in getting the right message across, casting the right cast can enhance the overall view of the characters, helping portray the personalities accurately, having characters the audience relate to also brings a sense of sympathy. It is important for a film to have a good, well-structured plot, clearly divided into beginning middle and end, with a built-in climax and resolution, this is so that the viewer stays interested and enticed.

The micro (small) elements of a film refer to the finer details include things such as shots, costume, sounds, lighting etc. These help assist with improving the quality of the movie as well as the aesthetic aspect. The costuming of the characters of the film helps give a better sense to the characters personality, status, and period the movies set. Sounds of a film are just as important as the visuals as they aid to immerse the viewers in a unique world, move the storyline along and enhance the emotions felt, one way a film could include this is by using score which is when films use music to correlate to the scenes or moods felt. Shots are the building blocks of a film as they have a significant impact on how the viewer interprets the actions on the screen and they help us interpret the film correctly. Finally, lighting is important to create the right mood and tone for the scene it is also an immensely powerful tool used by filmmakers to enhance emotions of the scenes.

Joker first response

I would give the film an 8/10. I really liked the use of mise en scene specifically the lighting which i felt really strengthened the story as it progressed. Though the story was quite dark I felt that it was very thought provoking and was interesting to see Arthurs progression into the Joker.

Video Editing (Cuts)

L-Cuts are when the camera cuts from the subject who is talking to a different subject(s) whilst the audio remains.

J-Cuts are when the audience hears the second clip before hearing the audio attached.

The scene where the Arthur is in therapy utilises a L-Cut shot where the therapist is speaking and the camera cuts to Arthur listening, whilst the studio of the therapist continues.

The scene with Arthur and his Mother uses a J-Cut shot, this is because they hear the introductory music to the Murray show and it cuts their conversation and draws attention to the next shot, being Murray in his show.

Activity 1 Moonlight

Diegetic – This is medium close up shot of Little, this shot forces the audience to focus on Littles side profile and his expression in relation to the emotion he feels in the rising action of Moonlight. This makes the audience feel a connection to the subject in order to sympathise and relate to the troubles Little experiences in early life.

Intra Diegetic – This shot allows the audience to adopt Chiron viewpoint looking at Kevin, this paints Chiron as a vulnerable and troubled person. By looking through Chiron’s perspective the audience feels a sense of regret from Kevin as he doesn’t want to hit us.

Extra Diegetic- This shot allows the subject to break the 4th wall, as Kevin looks past the camera as if he is looking at us, the audience. This abolishes the personal relationship we formed with Black and instead we are shocked with a sense of reality as we realise we are just on lookers experiencing the story.
