diegetic vs non-diegetic sound activities 2-6

activity 2 – an example of diegetic sound is the news on the tv that the characters are listening to, and an example of non-diegetic sound is the score used to create suspense and tension for the viewer.

activity 3 – a ‘needle drop’ moment in a film can be defined as adding a pre-existing song into a movie scene

activity 4 – an example of sound in film that could be created by a foley artist could be footsteps, glass breaking etc.

Activity 5 – an example of a Leitmotif used in another movie is in Disneys Encanto the line ‘we don’t talk about bruno’ is repeated throughout the movie to show the families negative thoughts about him.

activity 6 – in Sofia Coppola’s ‘the virgin suicides’ narration is used to tell the story from an outsiders perspective of the sisters, the narration never going into too much detail and reasoning about the girls lives and deaths creates a disconnect between the audience and the girls.

camera angles in moonlight (activity 3)

in this shot, a high angle is used to show the viewer how small and vulnerable Little is feeling

this shot is taken from a low angle to show the viewer that now Little isn’t as timid as we was before as this was after he got his revenge on the bully character.

this shot is taken from a Birds Eye view, with the two characters being unusually distant from the camera, its giving the viewer a less intimate, colder feel to the scene as his relationship with his mother is now just that.

shots in moonlight (activity 2)

this shot is a medium shot (MS). this makes the viewer see what Littles character is seeing, making the viewer feel the coldness of his mother as she’s just looking straight at him at a distance preparing to shout at him, it also creates a disconnect between the viewer and the character of the mother.

this shot is a close-up (CU) shot. it makes the viewer see the full expression on Littles face as he is looking at the bulls fearfully not knowing what they are going to do next, creating a feel of suspense.

this is an example of and extra long shot (XLS) , this is showing the viewer how lonely Little feels as he’s sat alone with the setting taking up most of the frame, there being no one else with him.

Cinematography in moonlight (activity 1)

diegetic – in this frame, the audience is forced to focus on Littles facial expression as he is disappointed and scared of his mother, this creates a connection between Littles character and the audience as they sympathise with him.

Intra diegetic – In this frame you are put in the shoes of Littles character with all the boys looking at him and surrounding him, this makes you see what he sees from his viewpoint feeling the intimidation he’s feeling.

Extra diegetic – Kevins character looking directly at the camera aids to break the 4th wall as it seems he’s looking directly at the audience, it brings a more intimate feel. his expression catches the viewer off guard as the idea they had previously been presented with of his character now changes with just one look.

joker first response- coco

Joker first response.

After watching the movie “joker” I would give it a 7/10. I loved the idea of the actor slowly throughout the movie going more and more mad and slowly losing it. I liked the concept of him knowing he had nothing to lose in his life and he was going to do anything he can before it all got destroyed.

Cinematography/Cinematographer Definitions

Cinematography – the art of photography and camerawork in film-making.

Cinematographer – the one who directs said cinematography, deciding on which camera to use, the lighting and staging of each shot, and how the resulting footage will look.

A cinematographer’s job is much more focused than the director’s. The director will manage everything about the film and how those taking part in it’s creation will do so, whislt the cinematographer solely controls the visuals.

Sound Activities 2-6

2. An example of diegetic sound in Shaun Of The Dead is the dialogue between characters. An example of non-diegetic sound is the score that is used to create rising tension.

3. A needle drop in film is when a character puts on music in the narrative of the film, and the same song is then used in that scene.

4. A Foley artist would create sounds including footsteps, punches and rain. These are sounds that may not be heard in the original recording of the scene.

5. Jaws (1975), directed by Steven Spielberg and composed by John Williams, uses a leitmotif in order to convey when the shark is present and ready to attack.

6. Nicolas Winding Refn’s film Bronson (2008) uses voice-over narration to give the audience the protagonist’s perspective of the narrative events, as well as to quickly cover his life before prison at the beginning of the film. Because the narrator is ‘untrustworthy’, the narration is also used for comedic effect.
