STATEMENT OF INTENT

I have chosen this brief to promote my original coming of age film ‘My Incredible Life’. The movie itself aims to empower audience through personal struggles in life regarding bullying, and self-loathing. The promotional products aim to entice the audience into sympathising with the protagonist.

My film will feature narrative devices such as a non-linear narrative companied by a narrator. This should help alienate the audience, forcing them into a position of self-reflection rather than pure empathy with the protagonist and becoming a passive audience. The film will also feature Todorov’s theory of equilibrium, allowing the audience to connect with the world the protagonist lives, and helping them find their resolution alongside the protagonist. The posters will feature Claud Levi Strauss’ theory of binary opposition, where the optimistic title will juxtapose the darker and more pessimistic image creating this message of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’.

I intend to engage with a teenage audience (aged 12-19) who possibly struggle with mental health themselves, as well as audience who enjoy a deep and emotional narrative. According to VALs psychographics, the audience I aim to reach are Seekers and Self-Expression Activators, who desire self-discovery, which is precisely what my film intends to do, as it strips away the common positivity of “I’m alright” and reveals the deeper truth, allowing the audience to discover that within themselves. Despite the fact that the film will feature a female heavy cast, the messages provided should apply to both male and female audience.

I enjoy watching behind the scenes footage of films and TV series, and aspire to work within tv and film production, so being able to re-create what I admire on a smaller scale is the main reason that I have chosen to do this. I have watched many directors talk about the creative process for making their films, and I love hearing why certain elements were included, what the goal of the movie was which is what I aim to reflect in one of my TikTok Videos.

Between my 3 posters I will be keeping the same format, however changing the subject and message linked below. 1 will create a false sense of positivity, another posing a question, and the final giving an unwanted answer to the question. Having these 3 posters be closely linked like this allows the audience to actively think about what these messages mean, which will intrigue them to then watch the film. The TikTok videos will feature behind the scenes, reviews and a trailer.

I am producing 2 media products for set brief 6. This is because I am very interested in news and current affairs and I am hoping to become a journalist when I leave school. I wanted to take up this brief because I found the theory of the liberal free press both very interesting and very confusing! In some ways I understand that there should be ‘freedom’ in the press, to both publish and produce new work, but I also think that in an age of new media, where we can access news and information at anytime from any source does mean that the notion of press freedom needs to be regulated in some way. I  hope that my NEA will help me to explore these issues.

It is really important that I have a target audience in mind, so the audience I am targeting will be teenagers who are just emerging as political voters, essentially they will be 16-18, educated to Key Stage 5 and looking to go on to university. In terms of Pyschographic profiling (Rubicam and Young), I am targeting, ‘succeeders’, ‘reformers’ and ‘aspirers’. In terms of uses and gratifications I am aiming to create products that provide information about the world that connects individuals, families and communities together through a greater awareness of social and political issues. Therefore, my aim is reconcile traditional media with a new form aimed at younger people. As I often read the Guardian and the Financial Times, so I will ensure that the style, tone and register of my web pages will reflect these professional products. For example, the Financial Times uses a lot of quantitative data often presented in graphic form and I will include this on my web pages. In terms of the audio production, I always listen to Radio 4, for example, The Today programme, so again my audio products will reflect the formal tone of this news broadcast.

I want to make both productions to be connected in terms of content and representation, so my audio will actually be the same as one of my main articles from the website, but will include the actual voices of the participants that I used for the article. I will also use consistent branding and iconography, such as the title and strapline to ensure iconic and indexical signs (C S Pierce) are consistent. As with the written articles on the blog, I will use a formal register of language.

Task 2 – video games

  1. Why, according to the news report do investors like the Video Games Industry so much?

The news report Suggests that because video games get increasing engagement, Investers that are interested in the area could get big returns from it. With this rapidly growing engagement, Companies like Take-Two Interactive and Electronic Arts are increasing their sales and setting best case price targets at around $155.

2. What are E sports?

E-sports (electronic sports) are a form of competition using video games. E-sports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players, played individually or as teams.

  1. How is new digital media technology changing the way that video games are accessed by consumers?

From 2016 to now, the global mobile app gaming market grew more than any other gaming type with an expected value of $72.3 billion in 2020. Mobiles and tablets have influenced the structure of many industries, from retail to hospitality, and gaming technology is no different. 50% of gaming will be conducted on mobile and tablet devices, with many people able to play from the comfort of their own home.

  1. What does FPS and MMORP stand for?
  • FPS= frames per second
  • MMORP= massively multiplayer online role-playing game

Task 3

Goode and Nehuda’s 5 key features of moral panic:

Concern: make (someone) anxious or worried.

Hostility: hostile behaviour; unfriendliness or opposition.

Consensus: a general agreement.

Disproportionality: unequal or out of proportion.

Volatility: liability to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse.

Moral panic on case study 2:

Concern-

Hostility-

Consensus-

Disproportionality- The statistics used here are intended to shock readers, due to the high amount of time spent and kills achieved on ‘Combat Arms.’ However, it may be argued that E-Sports competitors would spend similar amounts of time on video games, and that does not instantly determine that they too will go out and murder people.

Volatility-
