Statement of intent for my magazine

The demographic for my media product is females in the late teens and twenties.

My magazine front cover will promote the love and interest for ‘comfy’ fashion to the public, whilst still following the latest trends. The cover will include a photo of a confident, young boy wearing a tracksuit from the brand ‘Nike’. He is going to pose in a cool and quirky way to bring attention to his clothing. My model in the photo will also be making direct eye contact with the camera to assert dominance and masculinity, and the camera angle will be from below, which will showcase the model looking down on the camera which suggests importance. I will use a cool-tone, blue background behind the model so that it will be eye-catching and stand out to the audience.

In terms of psychographics, my target audience is young male adults/late teens that like fashion with comfort, but also want to delve beneath the superficial, fake filters and the representation of the social media generation. I will include a teenage boy as my model, so people can feel more comfortable when reading and it indirectly shows the target age group. I think by promoting the brand Nike, this will attract young male adults/ teens and appeal to young readers.

There is also the secondary audience of females and a similar age range to the main audience.

This group altogether are very lively and like having fun with their lives, and they like to use fashion as ways to express themselves. They are a new-age group of young adults with strong views about fashion and a passion for what they believe in and their interests. They also may be open to explore and discover new interests like different styles of clothing that isn’t athletic.

The overall aesthetic of the magazine front cover is to interest people at a young age to influence them into being fascinated by fashion, so they can feel more confident and fit in with their surroundings whilst growing up. Throughout my magazine, I will also include beauty trends and makeup as my secondary target audience also follow these trends, and this will engage and interest more young females.

Statement of Intent.

The style of magazine I have chosen is fashion, I chose this specific genre of media because it is a multi-billion industry with worldwide popularity with a wide range of opportunities. I wanted the front cover to be feminine, minimalistic and to the point. I also chose for it to be black and white; this is so that it would stand out with a sense of uniqueness from other bright and eye-catching magazines and interest the viewer to want to read it. My magazine ‘Chic’ will be both a paper magazine and a digitalized version on the website. This is so that my brand can keep up with the modern technology that some people prefer to use when reading. Having a digital magazine will also ensure that people can access it worldwide at any time, which will help achieve greater accessibility, interactivity, and cost efficiency.

My target audience is women and girls from ages 15-30. This is the age span of young adulthood, which will be what most of the topics in my magazine would be aimed at. I chose for my front cover to include a person of this age group, in order to indirectly show the target age group. My front cover is promoting womanhood and the latest trends and clothing that help woman feel their most confident and expressive. ‘Chic’ will also provide advice on beginning a career in fashion and styling with accessible links, on the digital version, to agencies, blogs on where to begin and job opportunities for all areas of fashion inside, this is shown by small indications on the cover such as ‘Fashion Tips- outfit styling’ and ‘Modelling- catwalk nightmares’ this will lure in the viewer to want to read on in order to keep up with up- to- date brands and celebrities by turning the page or within a click of a button.

I aim to include different cultural, geographical and fashion style tips, tricks and trends in my magazine to attempt to tie in different beliefs and personalities. Some fashion styles I would include casual, streetwear, business wear, sporty, ethnic and gothic, to reach diverse social groups, this is shown in my front cover by my model wearing trendy clothing within her age group.  My front cover focuses mainly on the ‘Female Gaze’ and provide women and girls with the ability to empathize rather than objectify and to show emotion and intimacy, while also showing respect throughout. This is included on the front cover and within the magazine and shown artistically, through modelling and fashion. My model in the front cover is shown to be embracing her natural identity instead of constricting how women define themselves and diminishing their purposes through objectifying contexts.

I want my marketing strategy to be embracing social media and sharing small spoilers, teasers, highlights, celebrity features and product releases through the front cover of the magazines on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. This will attract new customers who often use social media and will want to read more, leading them to the official website. I think this is a perfect way to reach out and gain attraction from brands and celebrities to promote collaborations and partnerships to contribute to the brands, celebrities and magazines.

Statement of Intent: Magazine

For my front cover of the magazine, I intend to create the theme of beauty as my main style to attract readers. This will consist of makeup, beauty tips and secrets. I aim for these factors to appeal to any genders as beauty is embraced into everyday life. Beauty is known to be most popular styles amongst magazine readers, as many genders of today’s world are experimenting various techniques to use makeup. I aim to promote my front cover in the style of the gentle woman magazine as beauty is most popular amongst females and they need the sense of power and control to portray to the reader and go against stereotypes. The target audience I would like to direct my front cover to is from 18-65 years old with the gender mainly being aimed for females. I have chosen this age range due to the products and information I would like to make available as it is suitable for those in that range. Anyone younger than my target audience would not find makeup and beauty as interesting because they are too young to commit towards it and don’t have the knowledge to obtain the basic makeup skills. Whereas anyone above 65 would not feel the need to know about beauty because they would rather find out relevant information such as health and lifestyle to be applicable towards their life. As the age range starts off young, beauty becomes more of a common interest towards teens. So, I will have to make sure there is an appropriate amount of beauty information displayed, to attract the older audience and make them feel included. I have chosen Meghan Markle in the Tatler magazine as my style model because of her facial expression. Only her face being shown allows the reader to feel a connection to Meghan because of the up-close view.

I would like my title to be in front of my model because my company would need to be well known towards the audience, if I need to grab the reader’s attention in the future. Even though the title is in front of my model, it still doesn’t undermine the role of her playing as the protagonist. I would like her to have direct mode of address to portray her confidence and self-empowerment. This opposes the theory of ‘the male gaze’ by Laura Mulvey, claiming women are represented as objects that fulfil men’s pleasures of looking etc. However, I would like my model to challenge this theory by looking directly towards the audience (camera), wanting to be the looker rather than being ‘looked at’. I intend to make my model display piercing eyes towards my audience and inform them of the power that she has over drawing the audience in. I would like my colour pallet to consist of three colours, red, white and black. I aim to use red as my prime colour as it is considered as a seductive tone. This would create a sense of passion and attract the attention of the model as she would be looking at the camera in a seductive way.
