REPRESENTATION
You should also consider some ideas on identity proposed by David Gauntlett, see his site https://davidgauntlett.com/ and Theory.org and David Gauntlett’s Gender and Identity Theory | Definition and Examples (media-studies.com) for more information, where he talks about:
- Constructed identity – is the idea that identity is not fixed, natural, normal, predictable, consistent etc. Rather, it is a set of signs CONSTRUCTED to create a PARTICULAR POINT OF VIEW.
- Negotiated identity – is the idea that identity can be accepted, rejected, adapted, edited, appropriated, borrowed. Again identity is not FIXED but rather that it is constructed.
- Fluidity of identity – is the idea that identities are plural and can change – over time, depending on social interactions and circumstances etc
- Collective identity – is the idea that GROUPS as well as individuals take on board identities. So our individual identity may work with or even against our collective / community / group identity.
