In your statement describe the ‘media language’: refer to some of the stylistic conventions, genre and overall outlay (what are the main visual and textual components of the poster and how are they presented). Discuss also representation (the effect, the function, the meaning, the impact of your stylistic/visual and textual choices.) See if you can use words that refer to theories used already in the course: details that ‘connote’ something. Finally make sure, you clarify the industrial/institutional context. Where this poster appears, what does it promote/advertise, does it contain logos of the production companies?
Example
The posters will promote a coming-of-age film about the challenges faced by a street-wise drum-player from Jersey. Both images will depict the young protagonist engaged in cool, natural and arty poses, ready to perform or enjoy music. [media language]. Groovy body postures, hip dressing style and vibrant colours will evoke the upbeat attitude of GQ magazine. [media language with reference to genre and representation] The title of the film will feature prominently on the top of the poster, accompanied by highly esteemed newspaper reviews. [media language]. The poster will highlight the star appeal of the actors and especially the highly accomplished director (by referencing his previous cinematic success). Instagram posts will follow a simpler yet engaging format: snapshots of the character in relaxed outdoor settings — sitting carelessly on a bench and smiling, daydreaming or playing drums — would connote a cheerful and laid-back vibe. [media language and representation. Note the reference to semiotics]. The textual component will emphasize the time of release, the positive reviews and the title of the film [media language]
The overall aesthetic of the posters and posts will provide a variety of opportunities for audience engagement, as described by the ‘Uses and Gratification’ theory. My target audience is primarily teenagers and young adults, music-enthusiasts who are innovative and open-minded. However, this promotional style can also be directed towards people of all ages, genders and cultures, who had once experienced strong, uncompromising aspirations and feel appreciation, or even nostalgia for this state of mind. The atmosphere of playfulness and inspiration will offer opportunities for diversion and escapism. At the same time, it will invite the viewers to recognize versions of their ‘identity’; for example, the persistence to achieve dreamy goals or the capacity to combine effort with fun. The bohemian yet unpretentious style of the main character is meant to create a sense of familiarity, belonging and bonding (‘personal relationships’). Finally, the creative focus on drum-playing will promise fresh knowledge about recent developments in music, art and youth-culture (‘surveillance’)
