APPLYING NARRATIVE THEORY TO: Music Videos
Generic Feedback
Overall, well done and many thanks for doing this essay, we have made good progress by completing an exam essay within the first few weeks of the term, so well done 👍
- As general feedback, many students failed to write enough, so if this is you, you need to make sure that you always thoroughly prepare for your formal assessments. You were able to make note in class, you were able to use those notes in your exam (ie an open book assessment) so you must increase your levels of attention, commitment and endeavour if you wish to ‘be better’.
- Another area that students struggled with was structure. At present, I am not too concerned with the structure of your essays, as the assessment focus is on KNOWLEDGE (ie what do you know) and UNDERSTANDING (the quality of your knowledge). In other words, there isn’t an assessment focus on how you present your knowledge. But, think narrative structure in terms of your essay – Beginning, Middle and End (ie introduction, main body, conclusion); think in your main body you need conflict, contradiction, high points of drama, just like any other story. So this means, highlighting contrasting ideas, presenting your ‘Big Thought’, using what Seymour Chatman calls ‘satellites’ information that embellishes, enhances, flourishes your key points.
- Finally, many students either strayed from or didn’t even focus on the question which was – NARRATIVE – so anything that strayed into SIGNS, MEANINGS and REPRESENTATION is called a SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS and is what we are doing next, but . . . not now, as this particular essay is focused on NARRATIVE.
Hope that helps?
