Essay writing: techniques, structure and strategies

1. Think about possible questions

For the NewsBeat question we know that it is only going to ask us about either:

  1. INSTITUTIONS
  2. AUDIENCES

So it is possible to think about what kind of questions we could get. Such as:

  • How is the BBC regulated / organised / controlled?
  • How does the BBC attract new audiences (when there is so much choice?)
  • How does Newsbeat entertain, inform, educate?
  • What would Lord John Reith think about Newsbeat?
  • Did Newsbeat only develop because of the changes in new technologies?
  • How does Newsbeat appeal to a young / younger audience?
  • How does Newsbeat use new technologies?

2. Identify the KNOWLEDGE that you possess for (Newsbeat)

  1. The BBC is funded by a TV license (which is a hypothecated tax)
  2. PSB has very specific regulatory rules – Governed by the BBC (executive board responsible to government, managed by a Director General first Lord Reith, current Tim Davie, organised under a BBC Charter, first one 1926, last one 2016 ending 2027)
  3. BBC has had massive impact on British Cultural life “opening up new worlds to people” Cecil Lewis first Director of Programmes
  4. As such, BBC has transformed modern cultural life – Habermas Transformation of Public Sphere – “bringing public awareness the whole range of activity and expresssion developed in society” (Pilkington Report 1962)
  5. Underpinning this is the BBC ethos – to inform, educate, entertain
  6. So how does this work for News particularly with the threats posed by new technology(Annan Report 1977 and “the impact of unregulated competition for audiences, revenue and programmes” which JEAN SEATON WRITES EXTENSIVELY ABOUT
  7. NEWSBEAT Louisa Compton in charge of BBC’s switch to digital-first, using video, mobile and online to reach a 15 to 24-year-old audience who are switching off the radio in their droves
  8. a strategy of “listen, watch, share
  9. hey live their life through their phones and news is constantly reaching them and they are empowered to find out more.

3. What do you UNDERSTAND? What do you want to ARGUE?

I want to argue that the BBC is trying its best to survive ie making news more interesting and available to younger audience. BUT I don’t think its going to make it.

The impact of new technologies and deregulation in the 1980’s under Mrs Thatcher was the beginning of the end for the BBC.

in other words, this is what I understand about Newsbeat, BBC, PSB, new technologies, news, transformations and changes in society
