BBC 100 Broadcast

For our radio production, we will be going through the BBC’s history and identifying how it has both positively and negatively affected people in Britain. We will also be discussing some of the key broadcasts the BBC makes, such as Doctor Who and the World Cup in Qatar. We will be referring to Todorov’s theory of a beginning middle and end with the systematic structure of our program. We will do this by separating our key topics with music closely intertwined with the BBC e.g Gorillaz and Disney Rascals (British bands) to ensure we have breaks to figure out how to talk next. There will also be references to Levi-Strauss’ theory of binary oppositions, with Jayden often being the voice of reason and attempting to gather balanced opinions from the rest of our group, and Rohan and Ben often giving strong informed responses.

In evaluation, our program was not as focused on the BBC as we would have liked. Overall, this simply came down to not enough preparation being made for the show and running out of ideas to talk about. In addition, Kai and Xavier did not talk as much as the others, and if I were to do this again I would ensure we had a full plan ready and make sure everyone was involved as much as possible.

BBC 100 radio show+Statement of intent

Statement Of Intent

I intend to create an hour long radio show which talks mainly about the BBC but also recent events. The show will include 5 speakers and will also play music throughout the hour. The show will also be recorded and then uploaded to soundcloud.

Crissel sets out four main categories for Radio: Words, Sounds, Music and Silence. Our show will likely include all but sounds, a lack of experience with presenting a radio show implies we will likely not include the convention of non-diegetic sound but rather focus on Words, music and silence. Silence will be used as time for thought as the show isn’t scripted or a reading the speakers will need time to think a response or a new topic of discussion. We will play music which a likely audience will be familiar with, as the main topic of discussion is the BBC we will expect viewers to be British so playing music such as ‘Gorillaz’ and ‘Dizzie Rascal’ listeners will likely be familiar with the music.

Radio is chronological and linear, our show will also exhibit this to prevent confusion to the listeners, by doing this we allow the listener to easily follow the narrowcast and conversation. By making radio linear we could relate it to narrative theory when trying to de-code radio and its meaning, because of this radio is also reliant on editing techniques. Editing techniques such as the fade will be present in the narrowcast and will therefore help construct meaning. To relate to Stuart Halls Encoding and Decoding model it can be seen that we (the presenters) encoded messages for the audience to decode, these messages however could’ve been decoded differently to how we intended.

The idea of intimacy, which is present in almost every broadcast and narrowcast will also be present in ours. With use of an informal register and selective use of pronouns such as ‘you’ ‘I’ ‘we’ we will be able to construct this same intimacy between presenter and listener. Radio is a flexible medium and is either a broadcast or a narrowcast depending on the size of the audience, for ours we expect our live audience to be 10-20 so this would be considered a narrowcast.

radio statement of intent

For our radio production, we will be creating an hour long program which is on the discussion of The BBC. Within our show we will be playing music which is related to the BBC e.g. the Beatles as they were discovered on top of the pops (a BBC production). With help from the BBC website, we will be doing a brief time line of the BBC highlighting key points such as the world cup. We will be sourcing audio clips which are related to our topic of the BBC such as, audio from Apollo 11, queens coronation, commentary from England winning the world cup.

Our production

statement of intent

For this radio production, we wanted to express thanks and appreciation for the BBC for their 100 year anniversary. Our main goal was to spread awareness of some of the major news stories the BBC have reported on throughout the years, by playing some short snippets from the BBC archives, such as Apollo 11, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd coronation and D day landings broadcast. These major events in our history wouldn’t be known in such depth and emotion if the BBC didn’t report on them, therefore educating our listeners with their broadcasts and importance we hope to stick with the notion of their ethos, educate, inform and educate.

our radio production- aimee, jasmine, roisin

For this radio production, we wanted to focus on celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the BBC we wanted to introduce small snippets from the archives to reach out to those who perhaps haven’t heard those audios before and educate them further into what it was like to be hearing that for the first time on live radio.

We made a plan for our radio including what we would be talking about and the topics we would be covering. We played songs which we thought related to the BBC ranging from Band Aid- Do they know its Christmas, Bitter sweet symphony, ABBA, The Beatles, Elton john, Oasis. We gave important dates in which events happened which helped the audience with understanding. Oasis was a very well known Brit pop band in the 90s which was relevant to play relating to the 100 year BBC anniversary. Our main goal was solely to just spread awareness to the audience to how the BBC has developed through the year sand how its goals and aims have adapted to time changes.
