The Three types of sign by C.S Pierce

Iconic: Camera, Radio, Microphone. the ‘sign’ shows a picture of the object which is universally known as the seen object, therefore making it iconic.

Indexical: The direction sign suggests that every type of media is in a different direction.

Symbolic: ‘Media’ ‘A-Level’ ‘Hautlieu school’ letters and numbers have a random link to what they mean, someone who speaks another language would call the same thing something different.

Media header and semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs:

An Iconic sign is something that looks like its object. For example in my work, the book, statue and Elvis Presley are all iconic signs

An indexical sign is a sign that has a link to its object. For example in my work, the newspaper, television and record all have links to media

A symbolic sign is something that has a random link to its object. For example in my work, the blue font, the black and white background and the fire are all symbolic signs.

MEDIA HEADER

Based on CS Pierce’s three sign categories, my banner includes symbolic signs such as the purple colour of ‘Media Studies’ which also links to the purple in the ‘Instagram’ logo. Iconic signs are the iPhone, the Magazines and the Newspaper. An indexical sign in my banner is the background which represents many different media forms and people who work with media, it gives an insight into the different connotations of the word ‘Media’.
