Iconic signs: the sky looks like the sky, the sign post looks like a sign post, the clouds look like clouds
Indexical signs: social media logos are linked to the idea of new media, the pastel colours are linked to happiness, the font style is linked to being fancy
symbolic signs: the word ‘media’ has been decided as society to link, the green curvy box thing, and the facebook logo we have decided this is what we will recognise the app by.

Iconic Signs – Abraham Lincoln, Stalin, Newspaper
Indexical Signs – The YouTube symbol relates to social media. Abraham Lincoln relates to being a US president, Joseph Stalin relates to coming from Russia
Symbol signs – A symbol sign would be the colour white, another symbolic sign would be the letter M, another symbol sign would be the fact that the dimensions of the post is similar to a rectangle.

Iconic sign:
The Instagram logo is not the actual Instagram logo, but it looks like it.
Indexical Sign:
The Apple logo is trying to look like an apple but it is only a silhouette.
Symbolic Sign:
The M in the Mcdonald’s logo has relevance to the letter we read as M.

The iconic signs in my banner are the magazines as they are not the actual magazine covers but look exactly like the magazine cover.
Indexical Sign
an indexical sign in my banner is the word ‘ media’ as it is representing the subject media.

a symbolic sign in my banner is all of the magazines collaged to look like bunting.

- Sign = something that represents something else
- Code = constructs meaning in media form
- Convention = the way of doing something
- Dominant Signifier = the most important thing that stands in for something else
- Anchorage = words that join an image to give meaning and context.

- Signifier = something that stands in for something else
- Signified = something that is being evoked

- Icon = a sign that looks like an object
- Index = a sign that has a link to an object
- Symbol = a sign that has a random link to its object
Roland Barthes:
- Signification = process of constructing meanings from the sign
- Denotation = the literal meaning of something
- Connotation = meanings associated or interpreted with something
- Myth = a widely held but false belief or idea

Semiotics is the study of signs:
An Iconic sign is something that looks like its object. For example in my work, the book, statue and Elvis Presley are all iconic signs
An indexical sign is a sign that has a link to its object. For example in my work, the newspaper, television and record all have links to media
A symbolic sign is something that has a random link to its object. For example in my work, the blue font, the black and white background and the fire are all symbolic signs.
