ghost town in depth

the political, personal and cultural are always intertwined

the theory that the political problems chain on to personal and cultural views that are all connected by a a single problem or causes

Antonio Gramsci: Italian philosopher writing in the 1930s

Antonio talks about hegemony and tat the domination of ideology and rule and that the thought of one view being correct and that you cant change a view forcefully and that the way of change occours in music and fashion which could be a idle consumption of change

the main causes of the political problems is a person called Margaret thatcher who used black people/the wind rush generation as a scape goat for the fall in economy after world war II she also shut down many factory’s as a result of these factory’s shutting down many people were unemployed as a company they sacked people in order to keep their money and sack those who weren’t needed or crucial to the job to work she also shut down mines which also resulted in unemployment of the masses the song ghost town was Addressing themes of urban decay, deindustrialization, unemployment and violence in inner cities and this song was published while the riots were on the rise and was liked by many and was put at the number one spot on the charts as the riots and such were going on this was also a way of protesting the way that things are and what they are like the music genre was called ska and it had a mix of race within it. the music video shows reckless driving and fighting and empty streets and boarded up houses suggesting the economy decline and the affects of unemployment you can say that the buildings were victims of Thatcherism and that they have been abandoned as the tenants have moved on to the streets as money was scarce the reckless driving symbolizes the craziness of thatcher’s idea of closing down the mines and making many unemployed as if they are on a (wacky ride) or it can symbolize the amount of people who got frunk out of boredom as they are un employed meaning that they give up with trying to look for them as they are all being declined a job so they have nothing better to do so they just sit around and drink. during a scene we can see a group of people fighting suggesting a riot has occurred or a mugging due to riots were a big thing during this time or it could relate to the stereotyping of mugging which thatcher coined to be black people who mug people for their money. there is a part where the car crashes into a wall suggesting the world coming to a stand still or the amount of people who have hit a metaphorical wall of unemployment. at the end we can see the singers throwing stones out onto a river or lake with buildings in the back ground this could signify as them throwing rocks at those who fired them or at big company’s who are all happy and safe with a job this could also be a hint at the riots that occur by signifying throwing things at big businesses’ and smashing window as riots do and by doing so supporting the riots.

during the era of Thatcherism a party of 13-17 year old’s who were all of a black ethnicity were killed by a fire that engulfed the building that killed all of them sadly but one lucky person who survived but Margaret thatcher’s scapegoating of the wind rush generation caused the police to do nothing even though it was said that there was someone who caused it but the police just said that they were probably doing drugs and or they caused a fire by fighting ignoring any other ideas because they were so set on believing on these things that were happening due to those causes and no one was right except them.

this is from the guardian article discussing this topic: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/may/15/race.london

Thirteen of the people in the house died – including the birthday girl, Yvonne Ruddock, and her brother. One of the survivors was so traumatized that he committed suicide two years later…

MOVING IMAGE – NEA (statement of intent)

Synopsis: “End of the Line”

My movie is about a woman who spends the night out in London with her friends. As she heads to go home, she undergoes the London Underground. Upon arriving it seems to be empty, but she gets on the train anyway. The train is actually a time travel machine and each stop either takes her into the very far past or the very far future. A catastrophic event is going to happen and in order to save the world she must figure it out using the clues from each stop before the train gets to the end of the line.

Statement of Intent:

I intend to create two film posters to advertise my film though including signifiers that aid in expressing my narrative. I will establish the key characters, ideas and themes without revealing the entire plot. My film poster will include the dominant signifier of a young girl who is slightly off centre in the camera positioning. She will be leaning against the wall with the background of the London Underground platform behind her, in which looks worn and tired. She will face the camera but looking to her left and a bright white light will shine onto her face which connotates the headlights of a train shining on her and also how in doing this, a shadow will be cast behind her giving a contrast of brightness and darkness. The dark surrounding space creates a sinister atmosphere and the un-nerving elements of the narrative. This helps to convey the action-movie type with hints of sci-fi and thriller in the genre and the anticipation that naturally comes with it. As the girl is the central plot device in my narrative, I will ensure this image is of a high resolution so it is the main focal point of the poster. In the darkness of my poster I will put my title of the film which will be “End of the Line” which will be written in a red-pink writing and a bold unusual font to give a creepy/dark connotation which will allude to the synopsis of the amount of time that she has to figure the catastrophic event out.

In my second poster, i will include a picture of the right half of the dominant signifier’s face and merge it with a picture of a creepy tunnel with train tracks. The protagonist will be staring straight at the camera with a ring light to dimly light up her face. The picture of the tunnel will also be dimly lit to fill in the darkness from the picture before. At the bottom of the poster i will put the title of the film which will be in a white font and a more neutral font. There will be brush splatters of an orangey-red colour on the font which will connotate to the rust and the tiredness of the underground. There will be another brush splatter of dark red paint on the length of the poster to create connotations of blood which will add to the suspense. i have used the film “Passengers” as my main style model as it has similar themes to my narrative. I imagine that my posters would be produced by a small indie company who were part of a large conglomerate such as “Warner Bros” and the two posters would be distributed and exhibited by a large streaming platform, like “Netflix”.

I intend to create to advertising products for my film ‘False Awakening’ – which is about a man who discovers the unimaginable world of lucid dreaming but becomes to carried away with the life he desires.

For my advertisements, I plan to create a billboard and a poster:

  • Billboard – will signify the main character placed in the centre with his eyes shut, implying he is entering his dreams. The title will be displayed towards the left and will appear skewed in order to convey the feeling of being disorientated, much like the protagonist in the film. when as the logos of the producers, distributors and exhibitioners will be discreetly placed towards the right.
  • Poster – will signify the protagonists fantasy setting, however it has deteriorated into a depressing isolated place much like his reality. the face of the protagonist will be displayed in the middle however transparent and faded, to reflect their sense of detachment and depressive state. The title will be displayed in the top middle when as the logos of the producers, distributors and exhibitioners will be discreetly placed and the bottom left corner

The title of the film will provide anchorage as well as the logos of the Producer, Out-There Films, Distributor, Columbia Pictures, and Exhibitioner, Channel 4. The film will be aimed at an older more alternative audience into the psychological thriller genre.

Sequences

With regards to the film sequences, I plan on directing, filming and editing two clips from the film to act as teasers and entice an audience:

  • Sequence 1: will display the main characters dull, repetitive life, whilst also giving the audience an insight into the who is character is as a person – particular, isolated and odd.
  • Sequence 2: reveals what goes on behind his eyes and the idyllic world he escapes to in his spare moments

I will use incorporate conventional elements of the psychological thriller genre in order to create a sense of familiarity for my audience –

  • Dark tones
  • isolated locations
  • eerie music
  • dissolving sense of reality
  • elements of mystery and confusion
  • psychological breakdowns
  • binary opposites
