statement of intent newspaper NEA

I am going to create a front page from regional newspaper reporting on a social or political issue of interest to its broad local. I will begin to make a sketch of my front cover so that I have an I idea of what I would like to create as I am not sure what I want to talk about yet. I want to create the format of my lay out of my newspaper first. Some examples of story lines I could create, would be about environment or economics, health, equality issues or even other issues that would target my audience. I will be using the app InDesign to create my newspaper front page and will target all ages living in the region who are interested in national and international new stories as well as stories that are related to the local area.

I will firstly use photoshop to create my masthead and then use InDesign to create the template ad import the masthead onto it. I will have a couple drafts and then finally choose the template that I prefer last and import all my final details onto it. To get an idea of what I am going to do I will ask some of my friends and ask what they would like to hear about so it makes the audience more interested in what they would like to see.

I am going to add some theory into my newspaper as I would like to portray the five filters that Noam Chomsky talks about so that it helps gain the effect of a propaganda model that focuses on inequality of wealth and power and its multilevel effects on mass-media interests and choices. Overall, I am intending to complete this by Friday.

Q7 Media Paper 1: Ideology can be defined as a collection of values and beliefs. To what extent do media products target audiences by constructing an ideological view of the world?
You should refer to your newspaper Close Study Products, The i and The Daily Mail.

Chomsky’s explains how mass media works against democracy’s best interests. The corporations and investors controlling the outlets where most people get their news, selectively choose what to cover for reasons having to do with personal agendas and retaining power, rather than what’s best for readers and viewers. The distinctive fact that the media, more specifically newspapers manipulate people’s intake of economic, political and social policies and how it is perfectly constructed for the publics mind.

Stereotypically, there are two ends of a political spectrum, authoritarianism in countries such as China, and libertarianism in countries such as the US. Chomsky states that instead of being communicated too by the government about political opinions and information it is actually the media that we receive these political ideals from and fed by newspapers and their opinions. To gain the general publics consent, in addition to big conglomerates ruling most mass media, heavily decreasing the public sphere by narrowing the beliefs of additional companies and people, since people are being told “facts” from media without comprehending the idea that media will also have a their own political compass.

The daily mail is a prime example of a right wing directed company and in conjunction to Roland Barthes theory on semiotic signs to represent subtly their ideas and political viewpoints. This is extremely obvious to the public what political party they associate themselves with. For example in a newspaper we have studied in class the title ”joyous jubilee” with a snapshot of the queen displaying a smile. In recent history of the daily male positive headlines are a rare sighting, rather slashing comments about the labour party. for example ”the Labour leader has launched bitter personal attacks on the Prime Minister”. In addition the syntagm of signs admiring the queen is a key representation of a company that identifies with the right wing side of the political compass. Someone who identifies with the more left wing opinions who be asking about tax pay towards the event and investigating tactical evidence against the Daily Mail on this headline. This is why the Daily mail are a conservative party supportive newspaper. The daily mail have been granted a 40 percent factual rate which elucidates that over half of their apparent ‘facts’ are fake. This links with Chomsky’s theory of how mass media works against democracy’s best interests. The fact corporations and investors controlling the outlets where most people get their news is worrying as the daily mail being one of the most bought newspapers in the country this means the people are being fed ‘fake news’, therefore spreading propaganda to eventually get people to believe certain political policies and bestow their authoritarian and right winged viewpoints.

Livingstone and Lunt state that the interests of citizens and those of consumers cannot be easily merged, that there is an increasing tendency in recent UK regulation policy to place the interests of consumers above those of citizens, perhaps giving newspapers a role in entertainment and advertising over education for the general public. Curran understands now that the primary democratic role of the media is to act as a watch dog, rich and powerful companies have more control and giant conglomerates own all newspapers and enforce their political compass viewpoint onto their newspapers, Curran states that “Instead of providing conduit for rational critical debate, the media manipulated mass opinion”. This dictates peoples freedom and restricts our opinions.

Media regulation task

Statement of intent:

I plan to make 3 products that are based off of the platform “Youtube kids”. I will make a poster (meant for in school boards and lampposts), a advert you would see on the side of your computer on a website and finally a billboard that would be seen in times square on a billboard or large screen.

For the poster I would like it look like example 1, 2 photos with big text and a 2 way colour background summarising the campaign so it is quickly read and understood.
For the advert I would like it to be similar but have more information on it than the poster with different photos and a eye catching headline to make people look. (example 2)
For the billboard I would like it to be simple and something that someone can understand within the 20 seconds its displayed, colourful and one photo with a big line that says “Would you want YOUR kids seeing this?” (example 3)

Regulation Practical Work

Statement of Intent

For my regulation NEA I plan to make three products, a flyer, a magazine ad and an Instagram post. These will all be based around a media campaign with the idea that gambling should be more regulated and restricted. Currently, the minimum age to buy lottery tickets in the US and the UK is 18, which is in place to regulate the ability to spend money for minors. I will make use of a hashtag in my flyer being #protecttheyoung to try and increase the audience participation in the campaign. My flyer would have a target audience of kids who would mostly be affected by gambling at an early age, and so they would be relatively simple with elements that are easy to recognise and relate to, similar to the flyers below with the vibrant colours. I would have indexical symbols relating to money (perhaps a dollar sign) and I would use these to try and get the audience to be more active while consuming it, as depicted in the Two Step Flow model by Lazarfelt. My magazine ad would have the same theme and ideas, but it would appeal to an older audience of people who have the disposable income to spent on things like betting or lottery tickets, and it will be more statistical, showing the real odds of getting money out of gambling compared to what you would be putting into it.

Abortion.

My campaign poster is going to be on the regulation of pro-life supporters using the media to shame those who are pro-choice. Shaming is a negative side to the internet and it is not fair that women who want to have a choice over their body are constantly being shamed.

I am going to use photoshop to create my campaign posters. My first poster will be more plain with colours and text but not too much. It will be going against people shaming those who choose to go through with abortions, on the internet. My second poster will also be plain, this is because if the poster is too busy it is likely it would not be seen. Campaign posters are made to grab the audiences attention. The poster will be

Statement of intent

For my cross- media production I intend to create a horror piece. My sequences will show short snippets of the film, which are ominous and attract audiences. I think choosing a horror theme for my movie, allows audiences to feel tense, wanting to seek truth and an ending, in order to feel a sense of comfort. The movie itself tells the story of a young school girl who vanishes when leaving her study session with her two classmates. Unaware of her disappearance, her classmates continue their studying into the night. Strange sounds and movements outside attract their attention and leave them to find their friends school books, sprawled on the tarmac outside. They run back inside, unaware that might have been their last chance to leave. The website provides audience with insight into my movie. They can gain information about the movie before/after watching it. I have added images and cast description as well as the sites you can access the movie. I intend to make my website attractive and have easy access features.

David Hesmondhalgh

  • Went to the university of Leeds.
  • Wrote books like The Cultural IndustriesMedia and Society and Culture, Economy and Politics: The Case of New Labour. Which all focus on the idea of the working world and what people expect in certain businesses and popular culture. For example expecting really happy, jumpy and creative people in a media job, whereas that isn’t the truth.
  • Hesmondhalgh argues popularity results in a large amount of product production and selling to make a large monetary game.
  • This is implied in the quote “the distinctive organisational form of the cultural industries has considerable implications for the conditions under which symbolic creativity is carried out’
  • Furthermore, Hesmondhalgh displays in this quote “there must be serious concerns about the extent to which this business-driven, economic agenda is compatible with the quality of working life and of human well-being in the creative industries.” that it must be difficult to have both a working life and a good life and them being compatible with each other where you are enjoying work and therefore creating a more enjoyable and happier person when out of work.
  •  “cultural industries are risky”
  •  “All business is risky, but the cultural industries constitute a particularly risky business”
  • Funding
  • Blinded By The Light cost around $15m to make. Key points:
  • Bend It Films developed the film with support from Levantine Films and Ingenious Media.
  • Levantine Films is an independent production company that had a major success with Hidden Figures in 2016 which grossed $230m at the worldwide box office.
  • The Ingenious Group is an investment company that invests money in projects that have the potential to deliver future profits.

Production
Key points for making Blinded By The Light:

  • Adapted from a book called Greetings From Bury Park by Sarfraz Manzoor (a play on ‘Greetings From Asbury Park’ – a Bruce Springsteen album). The memoir outlined his experiences growing up in Luton in the 1980s and discovering the music of Springsteen.
  • Co-written and directed by Gurinder Chadha who had a smash hit in 2002 with her film Bend It Like Beckham (Bend It Like Beckham made over $100m at the worldwide box office).

DistributionBlinded By The Light was picked up by New Line Cinema at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival after a bidding war with various other major film distributors. The film had been well received by audiences at the film festival.

  • The all-night auction following the world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 guaranteed the film a major global cinema release which many films never achieve.
  • Previously offered for sale at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival but did not attract a buyer at that point although UK distribution was secured by eOne Entertainment, a Canadian media company.
  • New Line Cinema are an American production studio owned by Warner Brothers Pictures Group.
  • The film was released in cinemas worldwide in August 2019. The DVD release followed in December 2019 distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment – a Viacom company.
  • Deal with Amazon Prime secured in early 2020 for streaming in the UK.

Reception and box office

  • Positive word-of-mouth marketing but poor box office figures – just $18.1m box office against a $15m budget which means the film almost certainly lost money when factoring in the global marketing campaign.
  • Rival studios argued that Warner Bros. should have begun with a limited release to build audience interest, and that the film’s August date was too close to that of Yesterday, a film with some surface similarities. [Source: Deadline Hollywood].

Promotion and marketing

Blinded By The Light was backed by a major international marketing campaign:

  • Traditional marketing: trailer, film poster with review quotes etc.
  • Premieres – London, Luton and Asbury Park, New Jersey (attended by Bruce Springsteen).
  • Heavy social media presence – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.
  • Interviews with writer, director and stars across TV, radio, newspapers and magazines (see below).
