A LEVEL COURSEWORK NEA – Alex Henry

Website

Statement of intent

I intend to create a website which targets an audience who are interested in action films and TV series, the website will allow users to see professionally written reviews on the newest films. The website will have a podcast linked, where users can hear a playback of a live radio show where we review certain films/TV series.

I’m looking for my website to be dark, minimalistic, and simple with a focus on the physical elements like photos and teasers from my films “John Wick 4” and “Undercover”. The website will utilise dark red text upon a dark background to attract the reader’s attention towards the main, useful information. This creates a code that the film included follows a dark and aggressive setting, this helps the user understand the film types and genres. I will have a home page, a gallery page, a review page.

The home page will be a general overview of the newest released film and display a small amount of information along with a link to a full review, which viewers will be greeted with upon opening the website. The home page will follow the same colour scheme with a navigation bar to locate the other pages which are linked within the website, like the gallery and reviews. The featured photos will flow into other featured photos to create a rotating news board of links to reviews of films and actors.

The gallery will be to display key posters and photos from my included films and actors, these being the John Wick, Undercover and 1916, along with actors Alex Henry, Jayden Bourne, Kai Dorgan and Harry Ibbotson. I intend to do this as it displays the type of audience I plan to target within my website, this being those that are interested in action films. The photos will take up most of the page and allow the users to create their own opinion and idea about the featured actors/films.

The reviews page will be a page that displays written reviews by a professional about the featured actors and films. The page will include a “quick view” star system in case users don’t want to read the accompanied full written review. If they do, the reviews will be quick and precise with a conclusion and recommendation.

NEWSPAPER NEA SOI

I intend for my newspaper front page to be based on the current fuel price rising in the UK or Jersey (both of which being affected hugely, not sure whether to chose local or main land)
The front page will follow a similar style to the of the JEP in which it will be a :
-Big heading which sums up the crisis in a sentence (around 15 words).
-A large photo displaying the crisis so that viewers know what to expect and get their attention.
-Below both of them, a small amount of information on the fuel crisis and the reasons it has begun.
-Then after than in a smaller heading “More information on page *”
The reasons I want my page to be like the JEP is because it’s something I’ve seen many times and its something I can pick up locally rather than having to source them online.

Body:

It’s just ridiculous, when I passed my CBT, fuel was 121p a litre!”
Recent rises in fuel prices in Jersey have led many people to outrage across the islands. One student, Alex Henry, claims that his fuel has gone up by around £20 a month since a year ago in July.
A study made by the same student sees that the original price of 118Ppl when he started on the roads has now gone up to 189Ppl which is a 60.17% increase in just under 12 months, sitting at 5.2% increase each month since July 2021.
All of this is down to the increase in price of crude oil, a naturally occurring yellowish-black liquid mixture of mainly hydrocarbons, which is the main ingredient of the petrol you find in the pumps today.
Across multiple businesses in Jersey the fuel has gone up, with Roberts going from 1.24 to now 1.94 in June of 2022, along with its main rival, Rubis which has gone from 1.21 to now 1.80, and on the lowest side, Channel islands fuel has gone from 1.15 to 1.75. Islanders are outraged over the prices and are finding more ways to get to and from work rather than their vehicle. “My pedal bike has never been used so much!” says local St.Brelade mum Brittney Tanner, “not only do I feel great, but its really shown me the difference in travel and how i can enjoy my life to the fullest”
So… what can we do to make a change? on the 3-5th of July people are going to be rioting by reducing the fuel they buy and impacting the government an d the fuel companies on the island. As well as this companies like FNF fuel will be taking legal action on the government due to the amount of verbal abuse they’ve had since the fuel prices have risen.

Media essay

MEDIA ESSAY – Newspaper CSP

Media products utilise a constructional view of the world and current times to target certain audiences and make sales. As Denis Mcqauil states “The media do serve the ‘public interest’ or ‘general welfare’ whether it’s by design or chance”” saying that the newspapers we read today are designed to sway and support our own decisions and that it doesn’t matter how it came about, that is the truth. As well as this, in the second half of the 19th century Karl Marx argued that the ideas of the governing power were causing too much in society and that people should take a step back and look at what they’re doing before they mindlessly follow it.

Firstly, we can see that within the newspaper “The Daily Mail” on page eighteen for the 06/06/22 paper the statement “Boris Johnson is by a country mile the best person to lead the Tory Government.” was made by Christopher Hart who is a writer/journalist for the daily mail. This displays one of the 5 filters of mass media, the structures of ownership. Media conglomerates are mostly owned or swayed by the government and if they go against it, the paper is seen to be less popular and many stories, proof and sources are deemed untrustworthy by other papers that have criticised them due to the governments input. Secondly this page can be seen to support the UK prime minister which supports Noam Chomskys idea that “the media is hand to hand with the government” and that they “are swayed to make stories which will change the opinion of the public” which we can see in the Daily mail throughout.

For example, on page six of the 06/06/22 Daily mail paper, the quote “Final parade was so very British” which refers to the Queens Jubilee party over the bank holiday weekend of 12-15 of May 2022. The quote directly supports the party and speaks of how great it was which further supports Chomskys idea that “the media is hand to hand with the government”, as well as this, the quote supports the idea that the Daily Mail is a right wing, authoritarian paper which supports the Conservative party which we can also see in the quote on page 2 “Tory rebels ‘are plotting a course to catastrophe’” implying people against the conservative party are causing mayhem which we can see in the quote “are plotting a course to catastrophe”.

Furthermore, we can see in “The I” newspaper from 06/06/22 the quote on page 20 “Thank you for saying what needed to be said about the Isralian state” which supports Habermas’ idea of the public sphere. Habermas said the public sphere was the mass spread of communication that came around with newspapers and letters were produced, which we can see used here to spread information about the Isralian state. Secondly the quote on page 20 “How long before Priti Patel makes it illegal to boo at someone we find offensive” which supports Antonia Gramsci’s idea of hegemony which is the theory that the state and ruling class have too much power and use cultural institutions to maintain power and control in society. We can see this because the quote “Priti Patel makes it illegal” implying he would abuse his powers to ban something he doesn’t like and make it the way he wants in court. Priti is the Conservative MP which shows that “The I” is a left-wing libertarian newspaper, being the opposite of the Daily mail despite the fact that both “The Daily Mail” and “The I” are owned by “The Daily Mail general trust”.

Lastly we can see that “The I” support Karl Mark’s idea that relationships between capitalists and workers were inherently exploitative and would inevitably create class conflict, we can see this as they didn’t pick a political party to side with in the 2017 and 2019 elections which can raise peoples thoughts of “The I” in whether to further support them. As well as this Nick Clegg, a deputy prime minister (libertarian”) sided and said he is a reader of “The I” which can further prove that “The I” is suited and written towards the members of the public that support the libertarian approach to politics.

In conclusion both “The Daily Mail” and “The I” target audiences by construction an idea logical view of the world, whether that’s through politics, war, celebrations or opinions.

NEWSPAPER EXAM PREP

Question:
Ideology can be defined as a collection of values and beliefs. To what extent do media products target audiences by constructing an ideological view of the world?
You should refer to your newspaper Close Study Products, The i and The Daily Mail.

References to key theories:

1. Karl Marx in the second half of the 19th century that unifies social, political, and economic theory.
2. Antonio Gramsci is best known for his theory of cultural hegemony, which describes how the state and ruling capitalist class – the bourgeoisie – use cultural institutions to maintain power in capitalist societies.
3. Denis McQuail says “The media do serve the ‘public interest’ or ‘general welfare’ whether its by design or chance”
4. James Curran says “The professional media sector occupies a space wholly independent on the state and the market”
5. James Curran says “Media enables viewers to plug into different views and different perspectives”

Newspaper content:

Daily mail (right-wing ideology):
Page 18: Boris Johnson is by a country mile the best person to lead the Tory Government.
Page 2: “Tory rebels ‘are plotting course to catastrophe’.

The I (Left-wing ideology):
Page 20: “Thank you for saying what needed to be said about the isralian state”
Page 20: “How long before Priti Patek makes it illegal to boo at someone we find offensive?”
Nick clegg, a deputy prime minister (libertarian) sided and said he is a reader of ‘The I’
Didn’t side with a political party in the 2017 and 2019 election.

Habermas and the public sphere:
Public sphere: Is the mass spread of communication that came around when letters and newpapers were produced.

-“Newspapers, letter and notes forged a consensus which shaped the direction of the state/country.”
-“The media ceased to be a emergence of empowerment and rationality, and became a further means to sideline the public. Instead of including a direction for rational-critical debate, the media manipulated and changed mass opinions”
-“The emergence of a independent, market-based press created a new critical political discussion”

Noam Chomsky:

– Sometimes called “the father of modern linguistics”
– Critical of the media, claiming they are hand to hand with the government, being swayed and told to write and make news to sway the opinion of the public.
– “Manufacturing consent”
– “The dominant mass-media outlets are large profit-based operations, and therefore they must cater to the financial interests of the owners such as corporations and controlling investors”

The 5 filters of mass media:

1. Structures of ownershipMedia conglomerates are mostly owned by bigger companies with the same Endgame: Profit. Pushing for anything that gives profit.
2.The role of advertisingAdvertising companies get paid by media conglomerates to sell a product, which they make money off of, as well as this the advertising company pays the media conglomerates to get ads within the newspaper or product the media conglomerates are selling.
3.Links with ‘The Establishment’Links to higher power, which allows you to get a higher controlling job within the media.
4.Diversionary tactics – ‘flack’A diversionary activity is one intended to attract people’s attention away from something which you do not want them to think about, know about, or deal with. Discrediting stories, sources and ideas so that it supports and fits what the government want.
5.Uniting against a ‘common enemy’ – something the media can write about that everyone agrees on or hates to make money and make topics to write on, to therefore sell more.

AGENDA SETTING: Agenda-setting describes the “ability to influence the importance placed on the topics of the public agenda”

FRAMING: the act of providing with a frame. a frame or a system of frames; framework

MYTH MAKING: Making lies to criticise and discredit other sources and stories, making you question their credibility.

CONDITIONS OF CONSUMPTION: income, wealth, interest rates, age, education, and family size.

Sexuality/genderThe Daily Mail’s main target audience is lower-middle-class British women. It was the first newspaper in the UK to write articles targeted at women.

In 2014, after Emma Watson spoke at the launch of the United Nations HeForShe campaign, the Mail was criticised for focusing its coverage on Watson’s dress and appearance, rather than the content of her speech, in which Watson complained how media had sexualised her in their coverage from when she was 14.

Media regulation task

Statement of intent:

I plan to make 3 products that are based off of the platform “Youtube kids”. I will make a poster (meant for in school boards and lampposts), a advert you would see on the side of your computer on a website and finally a billboard that would be seen in times square on a billboard or large screen.

For the poster I would like it look like example 1, 2 photos with big text and a 2 way colour background summarising the campaign so it is quickly read and understood.
For the advert I would like it to be similar but have more information on it than the poster with different photos and a eye catching headline to make people look. (example 2)
For the billboard I would like it to be simple and something that someone can understand within the 20 seconds its displayed, colourful and one photo with a big line that says “Would you want YOUR kids seeing this?” (example 3)

Piece 2, advert:

Piece 3, billboard:

Regulation

Slave:

(especially in the past) A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.

Free:

Able to act or be done as one wishes; not under the control of another.

Authoritarian:

Favouring or enforcing strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom.

Libertarians:

Seek to maximize autonomy and political freedom, and minimize the state’s violation of individual liberties; emphasizing free association, freedom of choice, individualism and voluntary association.

Hedonism:

Psychological or motivational hedonism claims that human behaviour is determined by desires to increase pleasure and to decrease pain.

Frankfurt school:

Pleasure gets commodified into popular culture and products which people buy to make them believe it will make them happier, however its only making the rich richer, and poor poorer.

CROSS MEDIA PROMOTION

Synopsis and statement of intent:

A British agent who thinks his father was lost at war investigates his fathers files and he never finds ever solid evidence, at long last he finds the last mission his father went on, “investigating and going undercover within a Nazi agency”, his son decides to go to the Nazi agency and try figure more about his father before his death. However when he’s in the agency people catch on that he seems to have incorrect German and is sneaking away without reason. But at very last, he finds out that his father…

Within my film I’m going to have a hero (being the main character who is looking for his father), a villain (being a Nazi operator catching onto the hero’s lies) and a victim, being a love interest of the main character being hurt by the villain. With the major plot discovery being a heartbreak for the hero I want the audience to feel attached and emotional for the main character, otherwise known as pathos. I intend the film to be for ages 15 and upwards due to the emotional and violent film, it would be a major film developed on a large budget by Warner Brothers and the poster would be a half and half, blue light vs red light (good vs evil) back to back displaying multiple characters along with a large title of the film, this way the viewers are intrigued to find out who the characters in the poster are. I will be taking photographs of myself with an army based uniform on, a pretend gun and standing tall to show the main character to be bold and brave, whereas the villain will be arms crossed and an angry friend.

My film is similar to the James Bond 007 films, marvels captain America and red notice. However the film takes place within WW2 which is like Captain America but it focuses on a real life undercover not a fictional sub-division working on technology that uses a all powerful stone. Its like 007 but the star isn’t a standalone character going after a baddy because its his job and picks up woman along the way, its a young soldier looking for his family by fighting the war.

Statement of intent for website:

I’m looking for my website to be a dark, minimalistic and simple website with a small amount of text and focus on the physical elements like photos and trailers seeming’s this (personally) is what peaks my interest. When researching a film I’d rather see the footage or trailer and see on screen photos rather than read about it. I will have a home page, a trailer page, a photo viewing page and a short information section.

– Home page: The home page will be a general overview of the film and display the main info which viewers will be greeted with upon opening the website.
– Trailer page: The trailer page will be a small page which is designed to redirect viewers who want to see the film’s trailers straight to them.
– The gallery: The gallery will be to display key posters and photos from the film to give viewers a further understanding of the idea, story and setting of the film whilst not giving too much away to keep interest.
– Information section: The information page will be a page about the producers, actors and general information of the page so that if viewers want to read further into the background and production of the film, they can.

I want the font to be similar to that of the Mission impossible: Fallout poster (see below) so that the film website has an action theme to it. The website will be targeted towards making people interested in the film, whilst also giving more information to those who already are interested. The website will used interactive buttons for ease of use, large readable text for quick, precise reading for the viewer so they can get right to the information. The website, like the film is targeted towards teenagers and adults aged 15 and upwards, with the website having a dark theme to create a setting before the film is even released.

Revision – Industries

What’s the difference between culture industries and other industries?

  • Culture industries supply people with the information they need to know to go on with life, like the news and weather. The weather tells them how to dress, what transport to take, and the news tells them if its safe to go outside, or if the world is at war, or if a road is closed.
  • However culture industries are also similar to other industries in the way that they need staff, a team, roles and a plan to work by, as well as this they are both designed in the manor to make the staff money instead of being entertainment or helpful to anyone, at the end of the day its just a job. –
  • The main difference is that people need the culture industries to be in the loop with life and know what’s going on, however they don’t need to buy dinner at a restaurant or drive on a new tarmac road.
  • Culture industries can use wider and more creative ideas and productions whereas industries are normally known for what they do and if they change its seen as strange.
  • Culture industries play a pivotal role of making sense of the world.

-Public service guarantees a good, reliable program with no ad interruption breaks

-However public service requires a payment of £100 a year, which some people might see us unfair or ridiculous.

-Capitalist media can have freedom of speech and make anything they like which can supply a small amount of viewers with entertainment, however not every one

-Public service media is determined and influenced by the government and what they want the public to hear.

Public service Broadcastings:

-What is it?

A public television channel that is funded by TV license fee’s from the government. The PSB is trusted and meant to create quality broadcastings and quality content, it is watched by the government and has to live up to the expectations, the expectations being “inform, educate and entertain” – Lord Reith (the first general director of PSB’s). They do not use ads to make money, providing a better experience to viewers.

-Whats good about the PBS?

No adverts, its diverse and has multiple options, its free to everyone, has music. news and entertainment, although it influenced by the government, they are not afraid to sometimes speak out about the government.

-Whats bad about the PBS?

Paid for, not diverse enough, has bias most of the time in it as it is as its influenced by the government.

-How is it organised? Control and Regulation

it is influenced by the government and paid for by the public using tax’s like a TV license. Channel 4 makes money through ads but is a PBS, it is diverse and is meant to entertain and make media that is directed towards a small group of people rather than a large group of people like the BBC are targeted towards,

Curran and Seaton:

Speak mostly on how media and PBS is too influenced by the government, however since it was first developed it was worse and it has come a long way since then, they speak on how it needs to become more separate rather than slightly influenced.
