Pastiche | |
Parody | One of the characters in the film at the end talk about how they found their character ‘boring’ which is interesting because it functions as the movie analysing itself in a parodic manner, the film creators know that that character was uninteresting and was done on purpose for the hyperrealistic theme of the film. |
Bricolage | |
Intertextuality | |
Referential | Different characters talk about their role in the game at the end of film, film talking and referring about itself. Also when Allegro was passionate and she tells us what the function of the scene was. |
Surface and style over substance and content
Metanarrative | —”is a narrative about narratives of historical meaning, experience, or knowledge, which offers a society legitimation through the anticipated completion of a master idea”. |
Hyperreality | Hyperreality is the inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality. At the end of the film the last line says something along the lines of “please, tell me if we’re still in the game” leaving the audience questioning what part of the narrative was reality or the game, as well as this character at the end of the film. The characters at the end of the film do not react to the “real” game creator being shot multiple times right in front of them, except that one guy at the end of the film like mentioned before. Perhaps as a function to illustrate that the game is unfinished at these characters were not programmed to react yet? |
Simulation (sometimes termed by Baudrillard as ‘Simulacrum’)
Consumerist Society | Allegro mentions in the movie that everyone has already played her game and marketing isn’t needed because of this. |
Fragmentary Identities | Allegro plays with different personalities and characters throughout the film, nervous, assertive, giddy, knowledgeable then clueless. Generates fragmented identities which was relevant to the plot as they were supposedly in a hyper realistic game with a clouded perception of reality. |
Alienation | |
Implosion | |
cultural appropriation
Reflexivity | Acknowledging your role in the research. The characters reflect on their role within the game/film at the end of the film. Also Allegro talks about the game urges whilst their playing and explains why they feel these urges. |
