CSP- NEWSBEAT

Possible Questions

“Explain how the BBC engage with new audiences through Newsbeat”

“How has the relationship of audiences and producers changed overtime?”

“Does the BBC challenge social and cultural views?”

“Explain how audiences react to new media industries”

“How does the BBC attract younger audiences?”

THINGS I KNOW:

  • Target audience: 12-20 year olds
  • On for 15 mins at 12:45 and 17:45
  • Can be listened to as a podcast after airtime
  • BBC is funded by an annual TV Licence fee [hypothecated tax]
  • Broadcasted on BBC Radio 1 and Xtra and BBC Asian Network
  • Can be viewed as a news article, a podcast, a radio show and a video
    • This allows them to connect with their target audience as they have many social media platforms and BBC want to reach as many listeners as possible
  • BBC is a public broadcaster
    • Financed and controlled by public
    • Free from political interference and pressure from commercial forces
  • In terms of Hall:
    • Dominant reader- shares same views as newsbeat, will keep up to date with radio show
    • Oppositional- will reject encoded messages radio promotes and will construct their own meaning
    • Negotiated: Listeners will appreciate the content but will turn to other sources for news
  • Editor of Newsbeat is Danielle Dwyer
  • Launched in Sept 1971-present

What I will argue:

  • The BBC is a public service broadcast allowing anyone to watch.
  • The ethos is to inform, entertain and
  • The aim is to reach younger audiences on as many different platforms such as Instagram, online articles, videos
