Episode 4: Magic

POWER, OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL . . . AND THE RELATIONSHIP WITH TRUTH

In this episode there are a number of themes and insights that we can get which may help us in our Media Studies, such as,

  1. Ownership and Control . . .
  2. Role of a board / a single owner proprietor

“Money and power can get what you want”

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH MISTAKES?

  1. What do you do when make a mistake?
  2. What mistakes have been made, by who and to whom (in this episode)? Specifically – how many apologies can you remember from this episode?

“I’m ready to tell you the truth. I’m not what I seem”

What would we call a mistake of fact and/or action? Is it a lie? A non-truth?

Draw a table, on the left hand side write down all the ‘truths’ that are presented in this episode. On the right hand side all of the ‘non-truths’

If there is no such thing as ‘truth’ or ‘non-truth’ how can engage and understand the world? Create a Venn diagram that overlaps ‘truth’ with ‘non-truth’ and try to identify what we could put in the middle as a kind of third way, or solution? Put another way, if there is no such thing as ‘truth’ or ‘non truth’ then how are we supposed to interpret and engage with the world?

What has this got to with my Media Studies A’ level?

“It’s all a mess!”

“Then do something!”

What are the Five Filters? How are they played out in Press?

Is it all about production?
