campaign posters

For this piece of work, I intend to create two posters informing and educating people on the importance of recycling, recycling is not just a matter of ethical consumption or a tool to help to curb some of the problems the environment is facing, but it is also an economic tool at a global level. Recycling helps to be much more efficient in consumption data and allows reducing the spending and improving economic figures, whether it is recycling electronics or simple household waste it is important to the environment. I will create my poster on an app which provides templates and you add the images and text.

statement of intent newspaper NEA

I am going to create a front page from regional newspaper reporting on a social or political issue of interest to its broad local. I will begin to make a sketch of my front cover so that I have an I idea of what I would like to create as I am not sure what I want to talk about yet. I want to create the format of my lay out of my newspaper first. Some examples of story lines I could create, would be about environment or economics, health, equality issues or even other issues that would target my audience. I will be using the app InDesign to create my newspaper front page and will target all ages living in the region who are interested in national and international new stories as well as stories that are related to the local area.

I will firstly use photoshop to create my masthead and then use InDesign to create the template ad import the masthead onto it. I will have a couple drafts and then finally choose the template that I prefer last and import all my final details onto it. To get an idea of what I am going to do I will ask some of my friends and ask what they would like to hear about so it makes the audience more interested in what they would like to see.

I am going to add some theory into my newspaper as I would like to portray the five filters that Noam Chomsky talks about so that it helps gain the effect of a propaganda model that focuses on inequality of wealth and power and its multilevel effects on mass-media interests and choices. Overall, I am intending to complete this by Friday.

newspaper SOI

I will be making a newspaper front cover using the software in design, and will be based on the easy jet cancellations in the news, involving hundreds of flights being cancelled this summer as it struggles with their promised schedule. Plenty of workers quit their easy jet job as they have to repay their redundancy pay, therefore they wont come back to the job, resulting in less workers for easy jet.
I will be making a newspaper layout and be acting as if i was making it for the jersey public. It will have a full header, and sub headings stating the matter of easy jet cancellations similar to daily mail.

MASTHEAD:
HEADING: EasyJet cancel several flights over summer holidays

BODY:
Easy jet had announced more desires to cancel flights over the summer holidays, many passengers have experienced lots of delays and cancellation over recent weeks. They have confirmed there will flight cancellations across other airports across the easy jet network. It was expected to run 97% of the pre Covid flights booked in July and September but has been decreased to 90% as of now. Workers made the decisions to quit their job as majority had to repay their redundancies, therefore many employees rightly left and decided not to pay, causing a shortage in staff, unable to meet the demand.

Style Model:

Daily Mail publishes front-page notice of upheld complaint about Iraqi bomb claim | Daily Mail | The Guardian

statement of intent

I aim to produce a newspaper front cover to show the social media and its affects on mental health for young teenagers growing into their older years

I chose this because it is quite a worldwide relatable topic that has popped up in the past a few times so will be quite accessible to find statistics and facts about it, and also for the photo i will input into the front cover can be quite simple so i can focus more on the content and layout using Indesign

In terms of design I will be referring to our CSP’s the I and the Daily Mail for inspiration relating to the layout and also ideas on where to place my banner, masthead and how short/long my supporting text columns could be.

Underneath i will have my body text at around 100-200 words where i will include facts and statistics integrated throughout, in addition to literary devices such as three word statements to produce audience attraction and impact/drama to keep the reader interested – this benefits the media exhibition as Livingstone and Lunt theorised that newspapers regulate in favour of the consumers above citizens.

I want my image to speak for itself in the way it is simple but relates obviously to my main idea of the content.

NEWSPAPER (STATEMENT OF INTENT)

EasyJet is cutting flights. I am going to make a front cover of a national newspaper that is targeted at people who are 18+ EasyJet has currently cut flights off recently and people are not happy therefore I am going to make the paper be against EasyJet as that is what the people want to hear when EasyJet has done that to them.

Overall the paper will be clean and the message will be bold with the price being up in the top left. The masthead will be at the top and there will be an image below showing customers waiting in a queue to suggest that people are waiting just like the people who are waiting for their flights that have been cut off.

My style model will be the daily mail. The news will be more serious meaning it is more liberal however whereas the daily mail is more conservative which brings in Jurgen Habermas’s theory

Masthead

The Newspaper

Title

EasyJet cancels millions of flights.

Subheading

Lottery ticket winner has recently gone broke after winning only 5 days ago!

Body

EasyJet has been cancelling flights from January to June and people are not happy about it, one women said she had a wedding to go to but could not make it. Many manlets are now starting press charges on EasyJet with charges range from 50p to £1,000,000.

essay

Media Paper 1: Ideology can be defined as a collection of values and beliefs. To what extent do media products target audiences by constructing an ideological view of the world?

Ideology is a system of ideas and ideals and beliefs are assumptions that we make about the world and our values are things we see as important to us. Such as loyalty, honesty perseverance etc.
I believe that media products target audiences with ideology, to get the public more interested in the views and ideas that media products such as newspapers are saying. Talking about these subjects such as liberalism and conservatism catches more of the public in to read and consume their products.
Their are many media products like newspapers such as the I and the daily mail. The daily mail being a right wing type newspaper with the conservative party and the I being a centralistic newspaper and having no political party.

Media products such as the daily mail target audiences like the conservative party by firstly using real-time scenarios and events that have happened in the world and applying their political view towards it such as the queens jubilee and states on page 8,shrieks of delight as royal standard flew over palace” It focuses on the support for the queen and the royal family, as other newspapers on the left wing might say different. Doing this will draw the conservative party and right wing citizens in to read their product and ultimately agree with it for the owners of the media product to reach their end goal, profit. The daily mail has been around for a long time, it was founded in 1896 and is the UKs highest circulated daily newspaper, with majority of the consumers being female with up to 52-55%. This shows how long its been using these media tactics and strategies to target their conservative audience by essentially saying what they want to hear.
Daily mail had many political views in these media products, particularly on the prime minister at this time, Boris Johnson. It had said on the editorial part on page 18, and states that Boris is the best person to lead the nation by a “country mile” and with the head title being “Boris is right and Macron wrong. Saving Putin’s face is a mug’s game” This further proves that this is a far right wing newspaper and most certainty implied for the conservative party. The daily mail has also stated that “tory rebels are plotting course to catastrophe” further making drama and controversy for the tory audience to react to and side with.

Furthermore The I has other ways of targeting their audiences with a centralized political view, although they say they don’t have a political view, it can be hard not to fall into a certain section.
for example page 45 it states to “Invest in biotech green economy and space to boost GDP”, this could be seen to be fairly neutral as most of the pubic would want this, but most liberals would most defiantly agree with this.
What they are proposing is that investing in the green economy and biotech is not only good for the global problems such as global warming. But there main focus is the space to boost GDP, influencing the soaring inflation at this current time.
additionally the i can just be seen to state the current news and propositions on current world problems we face today. It mainly focuses on the news aspect rather than political views like the daily mail. But all the have the same goal of profit in the end.

statement of intent- nea production

I am going to produce a page of a newspaper with an audience of people of all ages living where people are interested in national and international news stories as well as stories relating to the local area. My main article will be focusing mainly on the Roe vs. Wade law and just local jersey news such as environmental littering and how we can stop it and daily changes that will be occurring.

In terms of design I will be referring to our CSP’s The Sunday times and the Daily Mail for inspiration. My information will all be underneath a strapline for the paper, and it will also include other standard institutional features such as a masthead, price, barcode, and date/time. I will place my text in columns of three so it is easier for the reader and also place photos around to make the paper more interesting and for reference and more understanding of the text.

Underneath i will have my body text at around 200 words where i will include facts and statistics, there will be small and snappy statements which will entertain the audience relating towards Livingstone and Lunt theory that newspapers regulate in favour of the consumers above citizens. Key elements will be designed in photoshop for a bolder and clearer statement.

Newspaper Exam

Introduction

The 2 CSPs “The i” and “The Daily Mail” construct an ideological view of the world based on their political compasses, The Daily Mail constructs a conservative view of the world, based around what they want and their views – whereas The i constructs a more liberal view of the world, shown in their neutrality.

Argument

The Daily Mail is a conservative newspaper, proven 0by quotes in the June 6th 2022 publication, such as “Boris Johnson is by a country mile the best person to lead the Tory government” on the editorial page. This quote is in support of Boris Johnson, the conservative Prime Minister of the UK. Furthermore, the newspaper opposes those who are against conservatism with quotes such as  “Tory rebels plotting catastrophe”. This quote shows to me that The Daily Mail is unhappy with the “Tory Rebels”, it also shows that the paper is a Tory paper – they want the Tory’s to succeed and is unhappy that the rebels are getting in the way of that. “Gimcrack alliance… they are either clueless or simply don’t care”, this quote shows the negative views that the paper has on the alliance – and that they believe that those supporting it are clueless. “Only Starmer gains from this clueless plot” helps to show this, Starmer is the leader of the Labour party, who the Daily Mail would not want in charge. Other quotes show The Daily Mails older and more traditional views, for example in the editorial column “Is West End going broke because it’s gone all woke?”. This quote is making fun of being “woke”, suggesting that it is the cause of the West End going “broke”. The Daily Mail is owned by the “Daily Mail and General Trust” – who’s chairman is The 4th Viscount Rothermere. Rothermere is a supporter of the former conservative leader David Cameron, which shows that he too is conservative. In addition, Lord Rothermere, who owned the paper before the 4th Viscount Rothermere, was a friend of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler- showing his support of them by directing the Daily Mail’s editorial stance in their favour during the early 1930’s. The paper was originally founded by Alfred Harmsworth in 1896, who whilst he was chairman, the paper reported on “The Shell Crisis of 1915”. The stance that the paper took was so critical of the liberal government, it caused the end of H. H. Asquiths lead as Prime Minister.

I would argue that the Daily Mail constructs an ideological view of the world based around conservatism, to target audiences who are conservative. Throughout the papers history, it has gone against liberals and supported those who are conservative (i.e. Hitler, Mussolini, Cameron) and shows more traditional or older views on the world – such as blaming being “woke” on the current downfall of the West End.

“The i” is a more liberal newspaper. Whilst also being owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust, it is run independently with only one editor. Whereas the Daily Mail openly supports the conservative party, The i does not – choosing to not endorse any political party during key moments such as elections. However quotes such as “How long before Priti Patel makes it illegal to boo at someone we find offensive?” openly criticise the conservative party – showing the papers liberal stance. In addition, Nick Clegg, a liberal deputy Prime Minister is a fortnightly columnist for the paper – having a liberal columnist shows the papers support for the liberals as opposed to having a conservative columnist. Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of the labour party, also showed his support for the newspaper – declaring himself a dedicated reader. This support to and from the left-wing parties shows that the paper is more liberal than the Daily Mail. whether they want to remain neutral or not. Furthermore, Oliver Duff – the editor for the paper – is the youngest editor for any UK national newspaper, which may give The i some newer views than the Daily Mails older ones. Whereas the Daily Mail has an editorial column, which shows the editors views and does not give a voice to many, The i has an “opinion matrix” instead; which can include a range of different voices and opinions and gives more freedom and plurality in those voices and opinions.

I would argue that The i, unlike the Daily Mail, is a lot more left wing. Whilst the newspaper tries to stay more neutral through methods such as not endorsing political parties during elections, the choice of including Nick Clegg’s fortnightly column shows the papers support for the left wing as opposed to the right wing. Even outside of the i’s editorial choices, having Jeremy Corbyn show public support of them tells us that the paper is more agreeable with those of the left wing. The i tries to construct a more neutral view of the world instead of constructing an ideological view of the world for the left or right wing, but outside influence gives the paper a more left wing view of the world.

Noam Chomsky states that the motive of the media is profit, and that critical journalism takes second place. The Daily Mail’s and The i’s journalism construct their views to target the audiences that buy into those views and increase profits. Noam Chomsky also states that there are 5 filters of mass media, and both papers have been shown to use these. For example, “Links with the establishment” – as mentioned earlier, Lord Rothermere was friends with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, and supported both of them in The Daily Mail during the 30’s. Even now, the front page of the Daily Mail quotes “Joyous Jubilee” alongside a picture of Queen Elizabeth – which is in clear support of the royal family, the establishment of the UK. Another example of the 5 filters of mass media is “Uniting against a common enemy”. This is shown in The i, with their criticisms of different political parties. As mentioned earlier “How long before Priti Patel makes it illegal to boo at someone we find offensive?” in The i is clear criticism of the the conservative parties members.

Media essay

MEDIA ESSAY – Newspaper CSP

Media products utilise a constructional view of the world and current times to target certain audiences and make sales. As Denis Mcqauil states “The media do serve the ‘public interest’ or ‘general welfare’ whether it’s by design or chance”” saying that the newspapers we read today are designed to sway and support our own decisions and that it doesn’t matter how it came about, that is the truth. As well as this, in the second half of the 19th century Karl Marx argued that the ideas of the governing power were causing too much in society and that people should take a step back and look at what they’re doing before they mindlessly follow it.

Firstly, we can see that within the newspaper “The Daily Mail” on page eighteen for the 06/06/22 paper the statement “Boris Johnson is by a country mile the best person to lead the Tory Government.” was made by Christopher Hart who is a writer/journalist for the daily mail. This displays one of the 5 filters of mass media, the structures of ownership. Media conglomerates are mostly owned or swayed by the government and if they go against it, the paper is seen to be less popular and many stories, proof and sources are deemed untrustworthy by other papers that have criticised them due to the governments input. Secondly this page can be seen to support the UK prime minister which supports Noam Chomskys idea that “the media is hand to hand with the government” and that they “are swayed to make stories which will change the opinion of the public” which we can see in the Daily mail throughout.

For example, on page six of the 06/06/22 Daily mail paper, the quote “Final parade was so very British” which refers to the Queens Jubilee party over the bank holiday weekend of 12-15 of May 2022. The quote directly supports the party and speaks of how great it was which further supports Chomskys idea that “the media is hand to hand with the government”, as well as this, the quote supports the idea that the Daily Mail is a right wing, authoritarian paper which supports the Conservative party which we can also see in the quote on page 2 “Tory rebels ‘are plotting a course to catastrophe’” implying people against the conservative party are causing mayhem which we can see in the quote “are plotting a course to catastrophe”.

Furthermore, we can see in “The I” newspaper from 06/06/22 the quote on page 20 “Thank you for saying what needed to be said about the Isralian state” which supports Habermas’ idea of the public sphere. Habermas said the public sphere was the mass spread of communication that came around with newspapers and letters were produced, which we can see used here to spread information about the Isralian state. Secondly the quote on page 20 “How long before Priti Patel makes it illegal to boo at someone we find offensive” which supports Antonia Gramsci’s idea of hegemony which is the theory that the state and ruling class have too much power and use cultural institutions to maintain power and control in society. We can see this because the quote “Priti Patel makes it illegal” implying he would abuse his powers to ban something he doesn’t like and make it the way he wants in court. Priti is the Conservative MP which shows that “The I” is a left-wing libertarian newspaper, being the opposite of the Daily mail despite the fact that both “The Daily Mail” and “The I” are owned by “The Daily Mail general trust”.

Lastly we can see that “The I” support Karl Mark’s idea that relationships between capitalists and workers were inherently exploitative and would inevitably create class conflict, we can see this as they didn’t pick a political party to side with in the 2017 and 2019 elections which can raise peoples thoughts of “The I” in whether to further support them. As well as this Nick Clegg, a deputy prime minister (libertarian”) sided and said he is a reader of “The I” which can further prove that “The I” is suited and written towards the members of the public that support the libertarian approach to politics.

In conclusion both “The Daily Mail” and “The I” target audiences by construction an idea logical view of the world, whether that’s through politics, war, celebrations or opinions.
