Synopsis with statement of intent : Film Idea – The Informal Messenger – 1916

Description of Film: A young British soldier based in London, takes on a task to deliver a critical message to a Lieutenant Commander of Platoon 7 in Leicestershire. Not realising an ambush was about to take place.

My film will include a main character as the young British soldier, also known as the hero, as well as a victim who will be duped with the solider. Giving my ‘hero’ two roles within my film. This being a mid ranged Netflix film, consisting of a large amount of action and blood, leading to an age rating of 16+. I intend to create a poster with a male standing side on, looking away, as if he is at attention. Behind the writing of 1916, the background will be created as a peaceful sunrise to indicate part of my film, where the message has to be received by sunrise. My other idea for my poster is having a male character, point a gun side on as if he was about to shoot somebody with the same concept as my first idea, with the sunrise background and bold text. I hope to blur around the male so he is completely blacked out, so he’s not identifiable. Either picture I will have white text for the name of my movie – “1916” or “The Informal Messenger” with a quote below “There is only one way this war ends” or “Time is the enemy”.

My film is very similar and is based around the film 1917. My film is different to 1917 by the location it is based in, as well as the difference in genders between my film (1916) and 1917. On top of that, my film has a slight year difference.

Synopsis and statement of intent:

A British agent who thinks his father was lost at war investigates his fathers files and he never finds ever solid evidence, at long last he finds the last mission his father went on, “investigating and going undercover within a Nazi agency”, his son decides to go to the Nazi agency and try figure more about his father before his death. However when he’s in the agency people catch on that he seems to have incorrect German and is sneaking away without reason. But at very last, he finds out that his father…

Within my film I’m going to have a hero (being the main character who is looking for his father), a villain (being a Nazi operator catching onto the hero’s lies) and a victim, being a love interest of the main character being hurt by the villain. With the major plot discovery being a heartbreak for the hero I want the audience to feel attached and emotional for the main character, otherwise known as pathos. I intend the film to be for ages 15 and upwards due to the emotional and violent film, it would be a major film developed on a large budget by Warner Brothers and the poster would be a half and half, blue light vs red light (good vs evil) back to back displaying multiple characters along with a large title of the film, this way the viewers are intrigued to find out who the characters in the poster are. I will be taking photographs of myself with an army based uniform on, a pretend gun and standing tall to show the main character to be bold and brave, whereas the villain will be arms crossed and an angry friend.

My film is similar to the James Bond 007 films, marvels captain America and red notice. However the film takes place within WW2 which is like Captain America but it focuses on a real life undercover not a fictional sub-division working on technology that uses a all powerful stone. Its like 007 but the star isn’t a standalone character going after a baddy because its his job and picks up woman along the way, its a young soldier looking for his family by fighting the war.

Statement of intent for website:

I’m looking for my website to be a dark, minimalistic and simple website with a small amount of text and focus on the physical elements like photos and trailers seeming’s this (personally) is what peaks my interest. When researching a film I’d rather see the footage or trailer and see on screen photos rather than read about it. I will have a home page, a trailer page, a photo viewing page and a short information section.

– Home page: The home page will be a general overview of the film and display the main info which viewers will be greeted with upon opening the website.
– Trailer page: The trailer page will be a small page which is designed to redirect viewers who want to see the film’s trailers straight to them.
– The gallery: The gallery will be to display key posters and photos from the film to give viewers a further understanding of the idea, story and setting of the film whilst not giving too much away to keep interest.
– Information section: The information page will be a page about the producers, actors and general information of the page so that if viewers want to read further into the background and production of the film, they can.

I want the font to be similar to that of the Mission impossible: Fallout poster (see below) so that the film website has an action theme to it. The website will be targeted towards making people interested in the film, whilst also giving more information to those who already are interested. The website will used interactive buttons for ease of use, large readable text for quick, precise reading for the viewer so they can get right to the information. The website, like the film is targeted towards teenagers and adults aged 15 and upwards, with the website having a dark theme to create a setting before the film is even released.

Synopsis:

Film sequence 1

Evangeline, 17 year old girl will find an odd looking tree and goes to have a look at it. Only, it is cursed so if you go up to it, you get stuck in a time loop. Evangeline tries to get out of the never-ending loop. How will she do it?

Film sequence 2

A 17 year old boy, Charlie, is lost and finds a really tall tree and goes over to look at it. He then disappears and can’t get out. All his friends are worried. How will Charlie find his way back?

I intend on creating a thrilling, on edge film, that explores the adventure of a teenager trying to find their way back to reality, with all their friends and family are worried about where they are.

Statement of Intent- Movie poster

For my first movie poster, I will include the sign the female character reads out and has it as the main focal point. The background will be the forest in which she gets stuck in and this will go on into the distance to symbolise the fact she gets stuck in a time loop. I will have two silhouettes of the main characters, this is because I want to put focus on the characters, without pulling the focus away from the background and sign. I will edit the movie title ‘It Won’t Always Be Like This’ in an eerie yet playful font, which should capture the playful and ominous feeling of the movie. I will write in ‘Featuring the music of Inhaler’ in a smaller font to promote the music soundtrack in the movie. The genre of my film is Sci-Fi, like the movie ‘Palm Springs’ but different in the sense that it is predictable yet unexpected.

For my second movie poster, I will have the forest in the background, but only the top of the trees with the sky, this also symbolises the time loop as the sky is never ending, but also includes the trees that will give away the setting of the movie. I will include the photos of the main characters but these will be the main focus this time, not silhouettes. The title will be edited in, in a typewriter font, in the sky but just as the trees stop, so it doesn’t take away from the main focus of the poster. To include the music artist into the movie poster, I will write in a slightly smaller font, but big enough to read it clearly, ‘Featuring the music of Inhaler’ to promote the music soundtrack in the movie.

PRODUCTION – MOVING IMAGE (CROSS-MEDIA)

‘The Little Book of Loneliness’

Synopsis

Fred, a 17 year old boy, feels lonelier and even more lost than ever. To jot down his memories, thoughts and feelings, he begins to write an open diary as a way of coping with life. Every day he walks to his favourite spot on the beach and writes whilst sitting on the sea wall. One day, on his way back home, he leaves the book behind on the pathway. This story shows his journey through finding his prized possession.

Statement of Intent

I intend to produce two posters to advertise my film through including signifiers that link to the narrative I will create and introduce the central concepts, ideas and characters without explicitly revealing the details of the plot. My first poster will include the dominant signifier of a notebook, as the notebook is the central plot device in my narrative. I intend to put this image in the centre of the poster, the main focal point as a foreground on a black background. On top of the notebook, I will put the anchorage “He was lost, waiting to be found” , with the words ‘lost’ and ‘found’ in bold.

In my second poster, I will include a picture of a bench in front of a bush. On the bench, the male protagonist will be sat, writing in the diary with a rucksack next to him. On the wooden slats of the bench, I will edit in the title of the film “The Little Book of Loneliness” in a large font size. As well as this, I will put the text: ‘Featuring the music of Harry Styles’ as a way of advertising the link the film has to the artist through the use of his music. I will take inspiration from film posters for ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ (2014) and ‘Titanic’ (1997) as their narratives have similarities to mine. I will use their designs as a style model to ensure I have a structure I can loosely replicate and know which images I need to take.

I intend to create two different film sequences that would be featured in my short film. They would provide insight for my audience and give a teaser into how the whole film would look visually, how it would be edited and also how it would sound. My first sequence would introduce the setting, the main character and include the ‘exposition’ of the linear, chronological narrative structure. I intend to create a ‘morning routine’ montage which will be fast paced through incorporating sharp cuts between shots. This part will include different shots such as an alarm going off, a pan of a sunrise, a toaster and a kettle as a way of leading the audience into the storyline and introducing the character. I will also introduce the key signifier of the film; the main character’s notebook, to set up the object’s importance in the plot line. For audio, I will use a continuous background sound of a ‘nature soundscape’ which will include bird song and wind noises to link to the way in which my story has a link to nature through the character going outside each day. I will also include a recording of the main characters voice, reading the contents of his notebook, as an overlay, whilst a shot of him writing in the book is on screen.

I intend for the second sequence to document the main character’s daily walk to the beach where he writes in his notebook and jots down his thoughts and feelings. I aim to start by including a establishing, long shot of the beach landscape which slowly focuses into the character by using a series of medium shots of him walking, closeups of his shoes and an extreme close up of him writing in his notebook. To link back to the brief of including a link to a famous music star, I intend to include the song “Fine Line” by Harry Styles for audio as it creates an atmospheric tone. The climax of my film would occur in this sequence; when the character unknowingly leaves his notebook behind on the path.

I intend to create a website that provides information on the content of the film, about the brand identity and further information about the cast, crew and production elements. I aim to create 4 website pages; a ’home’, an ‘about’ page, a ‘production’ page and also a page called ‘take a look’ which will allow the audience to see my film sequences.

I imagine that my cross media production would be produced by a small, independent company which is owned by a large conglomerate such as ‘Warner Bros’. The two posters would be created for distribution on a streaming platform eg. ‘Netflix’. The production would project to ‘The Explorer’ audience who can connect to the main characters journey to discovery and also ‘The Mainstreamer’ who can connect to the cathartic aspects of the narrative.

media theorists

Barthes

Signifiers and signified. Denotation and connotations. Barthes five code symphony: hermeneutic code (enigmas)- construct moments of mystery, proairetic code (actions)- meaning is conveyed through action which provides explanation or excitement, semantic code (connotative elements) any element that produces a single connotative effect eg. lighting/ mise-en-scene. Media as a myth, naturalizes events.

Strauss

Binary oppositions of polarised themes eg. character, narrative, stylistic and genre-driven oppositions. Function of oppositions eg. create identifiable character types or clearly explain ideas.

Propp

8 stock characters; hero, villain, princess, donor, helper, dispatcher, false hero.

Todorov

Media narratives are created using moments of action (propositions). 3 act narrative of equilibrium, disruption and new equilibrium.

Neale

Genre repetition and difference. Sub-genres and hybrid genres. Levels of verisimilitude (extent product references to the real world, narrative similarities, character-driven motifs and audience targeting are important to repetition. Repertoire of elements and predictable expectations.

Hall

There isn’t a true representation of people or events in a text, but there are lots of ways these can be represented. Culture is defined as a space of interpretative struggle

Curran and Seaton

most films are made by conglomerates and that they care mostly about profit and power. This can be done through things such as vertical and horizontal integration, this can result in a lack of diversity and innovation. If we had more of a variety of media companies, we’d have more of a variety of better quality media texts.

Butler

Gender as performative it is created through a series of actions. Gender is not an attribution of male or female.

Katz & Gurevitch & Hass

Uses and gratifications- surveillance, identity, personal relationships and diversion

Livingstone and lunt

Regulation of films- the principle function of the independent bodies that regulate the UK’s media is to protect children and other vulnerable groups from the harmful affects of media content.

Chatman

Use of satellites to develop character, emotion, location, time

Lazarfeld

Two step flow of communication, active consumers, receive information from opinion leaders

Lasswell

Hypodermic needle theory- media propaganda performs three social functions: surveillance, correlation, transmission. Lasswell believed the media could impact what viewers believed about the information presented. Audience are passive consumers.

Essay Draft

Television producers often attempt to target national and global audiences through subject matter and distribution. David Hesmondhalgh states that operating in the media industry is a “risky business” and so many actions must be taken to avoid and mitigate this risk. One example of this can be seen in the production of Deutschland 83, which is a co-production between UFA, AMC Network and RTL television. This can minimise risk in that money is split between multiple companies. In addition, Deutschland is set in Germany, which means that having companies from different parts of the world (Germany, United Kingdom, United States in this case) can assist in the globalisation (spreading a media product to a global audience) meaning that a more diverse audience can be targeted and so more money can be made, minimizing the risk. These multiple companies also have lots of different contacts, making things such as distribution much easier. Deutschland was distributed through All 4, which has a mixed model structure as it is both stately and publicly owned. The “Genre” of Deutschland 83 is a Spy Thriller, as described by Steve Neale as a “corpus” or repertoire of elements which can have both predictable and innovative elements. Examples of predictable elements in Deutschland include when someone’s drink was poisoned and the agent’s finger was snapped.

Many theorists can be linked to Deutschland 83, such as Vladmir Propp. He talks about stock characters, such as the hero, princess and villain. Martin could be described as the hero, his girlfriend as the princess, and the West as the villain. The use of these traditional stock characters makes the product more reactionary and so reduces risk in that people are more likely to buy and enjoy the product. Another theorist that is relevant here is Tzetvan Todorov, who talks of stories having a beginning, middle and end. The “denouement” in the story is when Martin completes the mission by taking photographs of the important documents. Levi-Strauss talks about the use of “Binary Oppositions” in media products and these are relevant in Deutschland, as shown with the rivalries between East/West. Finally, Laura Mulvey described an idea she termed “The Male Gaze” and this relates to Deutschland in the sense that the main character, Martin, is male who carries out tasks which many may deem as having lots of violence. While this is occurring, the female character, his girlfriend, remains in the East, not taking part in any entertaining or enthralling activities and often being used as a source of male gratification.

Capital is a public service broadcasting program from the BBC, produced by Kudos Entertainment and distributed by Fremantle, that satisfies the BBC’s ethos being to inform, educate and entertain. Public Service Broadcasting refers to products that are broadcasted to the public for entertainment and exchange of information and not intended for profits to be made. This is contrasted by Curran and Seaton’s viewpoint, and they refer to the idea that “The media industry is controlled by a small amount of powerful companies who create media products for profit”. These powerful companies are often able to alleviate the level of regulation required on their products, as described by Livingstone and Lunt.

Key Points

David Hesmondhalgh – “Risky Business” – Deutschland co-production, RTL, AMC, UFA – different countries/companies – globalisation, diverse audience – more money

All 4 – distributed Deutschland – mixed model structure partially state/public owned.

Genre – Neale – Deutschland = Spy Thriller, corpus/repetoire of predictable and innovative elements, predictable – finger snap, poison drink, innovative = German, cold war.

Propp – stock characters

Levi-Strauss – Binary Oppositions – East/West

Todorov – Denouement, beginning middle end

Mulvey – Male Gaze

Lazarfelt – Two step flow – Capital – Ideas about London could be misinterpreted – lose money

Capital – BBC – Public service broadcasting – not for profit

BBC – educate, inform, entertain

Contrasts Curran and Seatan – Small number of powerful companies control the media

Powerful companies may be able to waive regulation – Livingstone and Lunt,

MEDIA THEORISTS

Tzvetan Todorov:

In this theory, Todorov mentioned that there are 5 stages that a character will go through; those are Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition Repair the Damage and Equilibrium Again. There are a lot of works that has been implementing this narrative structure in the story.

Steve Neale:

Neale believes that films of a type (genre, like romance or horror) should include features that are similar, so the audience know it is a horror film or romance, but also include features that are different, to keep an audience interested. This is his theory of repetition and difference. Genre is something that is constantly changing.

Vladimir Propp:

Vladimir Propp was a folklorist researcher interested in the relationship between characters and narrative . Propp argued that stories are character driven and that plots develop from the decisions and actions of characters and how they function in a story.

Propps 8 different character types:

  • The Hero
  • The Helper
  • The Villain
  • The False Hero
  • The Donor
  • The Dispatcher
  • The Princess
  • The Princess’s Father

Stuart Hall:

Stuart Hall’s REPRESENTATION theory is that there is not a true representation of people or events in a text, but there are lots of ways these can be represented.

Culture is defined as a space of interpretative struggle. He argued that the media not only reflects reality but also “produces” it while “reproducing” the dominant cultural order, in particular the order inherited from the Empire. The audience can interpret the piece of media in many ways, this can be based on things such as ethnicity and income etc.

Judith Butler:

Judith questions the belief that certain gendered behaviours are natural, illustrating the ways that one’s learned performance of gendered behaviour (what we commonly associate with femininity and masculinity) is an act of sorts, a performance, one that is imposed upon us by normative heterosexuality.

Katz & Gurevitch & Hass:

Katz & Gurevitch & Hass talks about uses and gratification with there being 4 key ideas, the first being surveillance (seeking information, eg. facts based information) The next being personal identity, which are texts that reinforce your own values or beliefs the third one is personal relationships where the media creates a relationship with the audience. The final idea is diversion (eg. media that passes the time and escapism, browsing Facebook, or playing games.)

Curran & Seaton:

Curran & Seaton talk about how media companies are structured and run, they talk about how most films are made by conglomerates and that they care mostly about profit and power. This can be done through things such as vertical and horizontal integration, this can result in a lack of diversity and innovation. They think that if companies are independent then there is more choice and diversity and creativity.

Livingstone & Lunt:

Livingstone and Lunt talk about the regulation of films. In the film industry the BBFC are the ones who regulate. They think that regulating media is hard to do. This can be due to people who are adults wanting freedom in what media they decide to consume. The internet also makes it hard to regulate. They also believe that companies that are powerful can avoid regulation.
