No Offence and The Killing – What to mention:
- A need to mention theorists and audience theories
David Hesmondhalgh – The culture industry’s – How does this relate to the CSP’s?
Most products are consumed when used and have to be bought again, but media products are bought once and continually used – they never wear out.
“The media industry is a risky business” Why?
- A PSB is provided through taxation through the people meaning if they make shows that aren’t enjoyed by the majority of the public then there can’t be much reason to keep the BBC around.
Cultural industries: Film, television, radio, music, books and press
Creative industries: Design, architecture and advertising.
How do these CSP’s try to relate and appeal to universal audiences?
In No Offence the main character features a Polish woman who’s mother is polish and later on in the first episode, it features some Polish being spoken which came as a surprise towards the end of the episode.
This appeals to diverse groups as it is more rare for the dominant signifier to be a female, especially when relating to the field of work she is in. SO, already Channel 4 tries to appeal to a wider audience and appeal to wider groups by using a female main character as apposed to a male one.
Also, not only is she female she is also Polish which is an interesting detail to feature for the show considering the show is based in Manchester and features mainly English people. This seems to be a smart marketing technique to once again, appeal to wider audiences.
- Also the use of PSB further shows their hope to appeal to as much people as possible ::
- No offence is on All 4 meaning it is provided publicly through PSB meaning it is easily accessed, freely, by the public.
- It is an original made through the UK, made and produced in London and features female protagonists, it has something for everyone
- No Offence was also remade and provided in France on channels such as France 1,2,3 etc.
The killing on the other hand, is a Danish based show that was aired an many different channels globally.
After the success of the show in Denmark the BBC picked it up and put in on BBC4 channel:
“It is a diamond of a series – complex, dramatic, thoroughly gripping,” said BBC4 controller Richard Klein.
It was shown on German TV channel ZDF and on Swedish SVT in the autumn of 2010. In the United Kingdom, it was shown on BBC Four, starting from 19 November 2011, following the success of the first series
- Similarly to No Offence, The Killing features a female main character. Since the Media and Culture industries is a risky business the use of a reused concept and idea for the series; the live crime genre; which is proven to be successful is smart and a classic technique used by big parent companies and PSB’s. SO, a use of a unique difference and originality, like a deeper and darker focus on the effect on the victim’s families is different, and makes the show more unique than others and explains why BBC4 took interest into the show and used it and broadcasted it to the UK.
