cross-media promotion (film) nea

B. Brief for Moving image sequences

For the next part of the CROSS PROMOTIONAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN. You need to produce 2 x 1-2 minute sequences from your moving image product. Note here how it says SEQUENCES (ie a sequence of shots that tell a story and present characters, environment, theme, action, intention and purpose). So a single shot lasting 1-2 minutes is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Please note how I use the term ‘MOVING IMAGE PRODUCT’ this is because your product could be a Film, a TV drama or even a music video.

Task 3

Plan out and prepare your 2 sequences. So talk about what you want to do, brainstorm, makes lists, ask questions. MAKE SURE YOUR SEQUENCES CLEARLY LINK TO YOUR POSTERS.

Make sure you are clear about the generic expectations of your production. WHAT ELEMENTS ARE PREDICTABLE? WHAT ELEMENTS ARE INNOVATIVE?

Task 4

Look at at least 5 moving image sequences AND UPLOAD THEM TO YOUR BLOG. Make some notes, ideas, thoughts AND IMPORTANTLY ANALYSIS on what you see and what you want to use in your own production. USE KEY TERMS, in other words, which key terms are important to you and your sequences? Which elements are you looking to include?

  • Characters
  • Motivation
  • Action,
  • Dramatic moments (ie inciting incident, moment of resolution etc)
  • Empathy
  • Linear
  • Chronological
  • Sequential
  • Circular structure
  • Time based
  • Narrative arc
  • Freytag’s Pyramid
  • exposition,
  • inciting incident,
  • rising action,
  • climax,
  • falling action,
  • resolution,
  • denouement
  • Beginning / middle / end
  • Equilibrium
  • Disruption
  • Transgression – often disequilibrium is caused by societal / moral / ethical transgression (ie challenging Aristotelian virtues)
  • New equilibrium
  • Peripeteia
  • Anagnoresis
  • Catharsis
  • The 3 Unities: Action, Time, Place
  • flashback / flash forward
  • Foreshadowing
  • Ellipsis
  • Pathos
  • Empathy
  • diegetic / non-diegetic
  • slow motion
  • In Media Res – starting in mid-action
  • Metanarratives – drawing attention to the process of storytelling
  • Quest narratives

You must include:

• At least two filming locations
• A range of camera shots, angles and
movement, to establish the locations and
representations
• Appropriate framing of shots
• Appropriate choices of imagery to create
meaning
• Editing of the footage for meaning, including
continuity and/or visual effect
• Use of appropriate lighting and mise-en-scène.

Task 5

Record some moving image footage either on your phone or on an SLR camera (we have some in our department). Upload this footage to the Media (M drive) on a school computer. THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT! IF YOU CAN’T UPLOAD FOOTAGE YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THIS TASK.

Task 6

  1. Export your sequence in Premiere so that you can upload your clip to YouTube.
  2. Use the following settings in Premier: File > Export > (Format) H.264 > (Preset) > Match Source – High Bitrate.
  3. Upload this file to your own video hosting site such as, YouTube or Streamable etc (I suggest that if you already have an account that you use a different account that is just for school).
  4. Copy the YouTube link into a new post on your blog
  5. I will then audit (as opposed to mark) your work. So yep, just get a couple of sequences done and uploaded and we can revisit this project next half term. 👍
