Semiotics – the study of signs
C S Pierce, an American philosopher, logician, mathematician and scientist, divided signs into three distinct categories:
An Iconic Sign: (a sign that looks like its object) the newspaper, the television, the radio
An Indexical Sign: (a sign that has a link to its object) the word ‘Media’, the words ‘DAILY NEWS’, the Facebook ‘F’
A Symbolic Sign: (a sign that has an arbitrary or random link to its object) YouTube logo, Instagram logo, Snapchat logo

symbolic sign(a sign that is arbitrary or random like to its object) – black lines, little table logo, other logos

Iconic signs: the sky looks like the sky, the sign post looks like a sign post, the clouds look like clouds
Indexical signs: social media logos are linked to the idea of new media, the pastel colours are linked to happiness, the font style is linked to being fancy
symbolic signs: the word ‘media’ has been decided as society to link, the green curvy box thing, and the facebook logo we have decided this is what we will recognise the app by.

Iconic Signs – Abraham Lincoln, Stalin, Newspaper
Indexical Signs – The YouTube symbol relates to social media. Abraham Lincoln relates to being a US president, Joseph Stalin relates to coming from Russia
Symbol signs – A symbol sign would be the colour white, another symbolic sign would be the letter M, another symbol sign would be the fact that the dimensions of the post is similar to a rectangle.

an indexical sign- newspaper links to reading, actors link to movies, Pac-man links to video games
a symbolic sign- colour purple links to fun and creativity
