joker review

THE JOKER – Phillips 2019

Rating- 7/10

I enjoyed the film mostly, however it was a little too gory for my liking. The storyline and origin of the joker was interesting to see as i now understand the character and the reasons behind his actions. Though Arthur was continuously doing unforgivable things the movie still allowed you to empathies with him and his struggle.

A memorable scene of this film was Arthur dancing down the stairs, i thought it was interesting to see the contrast of his mood from the beginning of the film when he is depressed and angry climbing up the stairs to the clip of him dancing down the stairs carelessly and his character as the joker being fully developed.

What does Monaco mean by the term “The Spectrum of the Arts”?

The spectrum of the arts refers to how art as a concept is so wide that it must be categorised, into the performance, representational, and recording arts. Ancient historians originally recognised art as being divided into 7 different categories; History, poetry, comedy, tragedy, music, dance, and astronomy. In the 1200’s, art had evolved in meaning, going from a way to classify types of study and performance, to a more practical connotation. Art’s meaning changed frequently from the 1200’s to the 1800’s, becoming synonymous with “skills” towards the 1500’s. Eventually, the sub-category fine arts was made, to distinguish sculpture and painting inside the clause of art. In the 1800’s, sciences like astronomy and philosophy were being associated with the sciences instead of the arts, due to the rise in scientific discovery and understanding.

The spectrum of arts were split into performance art, which relates to art that happens in real time; examples of performance art are theatre and dance. Representational arts relate to art that depends on societal contexts and language codes to deliver a message to an audience; examples of representational art are paintings and sculptures. Recording arts relate to art that more directly links itself to its audience; an example of a recording art is music.

The Spectrum of Art

James Monaco’s use of the term ‘The Spectrum of Art’ refers to the fact that art comes in various forms, categorised by their different styles and ideas. The ancients recognised seven; history, poetry, comedy, tragedy, music, dance and astronomy. However, by the thirteenth century, the meaning of ‘art’ began to change and adapt a more practical connotation. The literary arts had somewhat merged into a mix of literature and philosophy. The meaning of art changed within different centuries, it being synonymous with ‘skill’ in the sixteenth century, activities that weren’t previously included such as painting and sculpture, began to be considered ‘fine arts’.

The nineteenth century saw the development of science, and now, what had been previously known as ‘natural philosophy’ was now considered ‘natural science’, and the art of alchemy became the science of chemistry.

Monaco defines his ‘spectrum of art’ in three different categories: “The performance arts, which happen in real time.”, “The representational arts, which depend on the established codes and conventions of language (both pictorial and literary) to convey information about the subject to the observer.”, “The recording arts, which provide a more direct path between subject and observer: media not without their own codes but quantitatively more direct than the media of the representational arts.”

What does Monaco mean by the term “The Spectrum of the Arts”?

The spectrum refers to the development of ‘art’ throughout decades of history, and it explains how eventually film and other sorts of recorded media found its own place within the form of art.

In the beginning, the ancients recognized History, Poetry, Comedy, Tragedy, Music, Dance and Astronomy as the seven forms of art. These forms were used as tools to understand the world and culture around them. As for the Greeks and Romans, they further categorized Poetry into three categories: Lyric, Dramatic, and Epic.

However, as centuries passed, changes to these aforementioned forms of art were made. Dance, for starters, was dropped from the list and replaced by Geometry, which marked the growing importance of mathematics and other more “scientific” forms. And in the twentieth century as the modernized version of science was developing, recorded media was starting to revolutionize.

Film became an entirely new art form in which there was a much more direct understanding between viewer and creator. Visually, film changed the way art could be consumed. Then, when sound and colour got created within films, marking the end of the silent film era, the art of cinematography really cemented its place in the so called “Spectrum of Arts”.

What does Monaco mean by the term “The Spectrum of the Arts”?

To summarize “The spectrum of the Arts” it’s the idea that art forms each have their own characteristics, however the forms of art can work together.

Monaco outlines the different Artistic expressions that are used, visual arts, performing arts, literary arts and finally film including all these forms. Visual arts, he explains that these capture a single moment and are unchangeable. Performing Arts, these are pieces of art that tell a story and are often presented live. Literary arts, this includes poetry, novels and essays this tells emotion through storytelling. Film acts as all of them, including aspects from all forms of art.

He speaks about how Technolgy advancing, changes the idea of art, film can be watched in any space any time, unlike before when everything was live and more of a novelty outing to view one of these arts. Personally, i feel that the invention of technology pulls away from the power of plays and visual art.

He also speaks about how film is used to express people’s emotional and political views. Art can express people’s perception, showing people different ideas. Flim can these so well with using all of the art forms, including sound, light and writing. Cinema is also able to manipulate elements that other art forms can’t, making it possibly the most captivating form.

Todd Phillips 2019

Critical score: 5/10

The film had amazing cinematography, however there were too many filler scenes that were unnecessary and worthless to the plot, despite the attempt of these trying to give the audience an emotional connection to Arthur and his feelings it was overpowering and became forced.

Stand out scene: The murder of the three men on the subway, it was the first proper act of violence from Arthur and caused a switch into his violent persona into ‘Joker’ compared to his seemily caring emotional past self, seen when he cared for his mother. Additionally, it also caused an outburst of riots and violent protests in the city and was like a breaking point for people. Specifically, when Arthur is stood over the man on the staircase, this is significant as it portrays the lower class above the upper class which was a big change for the society in joker.

What does Monaco mean by the term “spectrum of the arts”?

Over generations, the meaning of the word “art” has changed and its history; this tells us a lot about what life was like during the times before us. In ancient times they recognized art as activities, there were seven forms. These were history, poetry, comedy, tragedy, music, dance and astronomy. Despite them all being very different they all are vastly helpful in describing life and the universe. Later in the thirteenth century the definition of art had changed, while still involving the seven forms, history, poetry, tragedy and comedy had merged and now focused on literature and philosophy and then re-ordered into grammar rhetoric and logic. Dance was replaced by geometry and the forms became more practical. In the sixteenth century the word art included a wide range of skills as you can master both an art and skill. But by the seventeenth century the different meanings of art began to reduce again as geometry and mathematics were becoming more separate and the “fine arts” were becoming more and more recognized. Throughout the nineteenth century, with the increase in scientific knowledge, art and science continued to separate, and art was becoming a similar definition to how we see it today additionally with the dada movement in the 1920s making art more basic.

Joker Review

Joker
(Phillips,2019)
CRITICAL SCORE:7/10 My first thought is that the score of the movie was exceptionally good. The scenes with music over the top of it made the atmosphere more intense and interesting. Memorable Scene:The most memorable scene was when the joker was dancing down the stairs. I think this because it was one of the first scenes we seen him in his ‘iconic’ Joker outfit/costume. However, from seeing the poster of the film before watching the movie, I recognised the scene and knew it would be a key moment. The stairs are he is dancing on were the same ones he would walk up every day to go home. This emphasises the scene as he changed his entire look and became the ‘Joker’.

Monaco- the spectrum of the Arts

“What does Monaco mean by the term “The Spectrum of the Arts”

The spectrum of the arts, i feel, is defined as the ways that art can differ and can change. Art is like a liquid, it’s definition is fluid and will change from person to person. because of that over all accepted definition has changed throughout the years, according to Monaco. the spectrum of the arts can also refer to the multiple different ways you can  experience a piece of art. as discussed in class, such differences come up when looking at films. The way reading a novel will change the experience, to the way seeing something performed will change it. some examples of this i could reference are the way that reading a novel is completely personalized to you, the way you envision the characters and the way that they speak and deliver lines is completely union to how you read. Whereas when you watch a film, the casting and their line deliveries are already done for you. Similar could be said about the experience of watching a performance rather than a film. other than the obvious lack of physical depth that a performance has to a film, when you watch a film, you know that you’re getting the best version of it. Whereas, when you are watching a live performance, things can go wrong, like people forgetting lines or props, but that aspect of it being live also gives it a much more human feel and a sense of adrenaline for the people acting in it.

Joker critical response

Rating- 7/10

It was very beautifully shot, the soundtrack was great and very clearly displayed and heightened emotions in the scenes. But the first hour was not my favourite because it was just Aurther wallowing for an hour, which I did not connect with.

Stand out scene- the ending

I feel that the music was really carrying the ending, the use of much more happy music compared to the subject that was happening on screen really heightened it. I feel that it really showed the extent of Aurther’s descent to madness. I also think the music fits because throughout the film the song ‘that’s life’ is related to Murry’s show and the reason he is in the ward is because of what he did on the show.
