representation key concepts – task 3

An example of a stereotype in films is shown in the film we watched in class ‘Moonlight’, because Chiron the main character grows up and is into drugs because of his early life growing up in a rough neighbourhood with a single mother who frequently took drugs herself.

An example of a countertype in films is shown in ‘The Princess and the Frog’ because the princess Tiana is not the typical Disney princess, she has a work ethic and unlike other princesses she doesn’t come from money and has to work for what she wants.

trainspotting micro elements

mise en scene:

In the toilet scene, set design is used to create a dirty, disgusting and dark atmosphere that displays how awful his life has got to where he he has lost all standards through drug addiction.

sound:

At the beginning and end of the movie. A contrasting narration is given showing his progression throughout the film. In the beginning he lists many things that the average person does in life in an ill mannered tone showing how he sees life as a burden that he would rather escape through drugs. At the end he gives a similar narration but in a more optimistic tone once he’s clean. Showing how he ready to live a normal life and is excited to try new things.

cinematography:

In this scene. Where he is hallucinating after going off drugs. A canted angle is used to show his paranoia as he sees people he knows through visions and realizes how much he negatively effected them.

Editing:

In the opening scene, many different scene are edited together in a montage to introduce Renton’s life. The first being him and his friends running off showing how his life is chaotic. The other being them playing football showing how close they all are. And finally Renton by himself smoking showing how he can feel lonely through his addiction.

Id give the movie trainspotting a 6/10, I really liked how it was filmed I just didn’t understand it. a memorable scene in this movie is then the guy is coming down from the drugs and the baby is crawling across the roof and people talking to him while he panics, I thought this was a really good scene because it was very chaotic

My rating of the film is a 8/10. I think it had a very unique and compelling story with interesting characters. The cinematography in the film was stunning and used colours in shots to reflect the moods of the characters. I think the most memorable scene in the film is when the main character Mark is hallucinating and sees the baby that died due to neglection from heroin crawling on the ceiling. I think it is the most memorable scene as it is strange in an otherwise realistic film.

Trainspotting First Response

9/10

Memorable Scene: For me the most memorable scene was when Mark Renton came off heroine, after his relapse. This scene, too me is the most memorable as it combines other scenes where mark has felt Guilty for causing pain, for example Tommy losing his girlfriend and becoming drug obsessed, or where sick boy’s baby died due to neglect as Mark got them all addicted to heroine again.

Trainspotting First Response

Score: 9.5/10

Memorable Scene: When Mark takes heroin after ‘giving up’ and sinks into the carpet. This is memorable as we not only see Mark’s point of view from inside the carpet but also the real events where he is being dragged into a taxi and eventually ends up in the hospital.

I would give this movie a 7/10. I felt that it does a really good job of portraying the struggles of drug addiction and how it can effect you and close ones. I thought some of the more vulgar scene were important to drive the movies message but some I felt were needlessly shocking like the main characters relations with an underage girl. A scene that stuck out to me was the part where he goes back to the drugs after promising he would stop as it shows how conflicted he feels and how hard it is to stop.
