City Of God blog micro elements

Sound- The film features many instances of Diegetic Sounds such as the sound of loud traffic and the sharpening of knives. This impacts the audience as it immerses them in the world more. For example, the audiences will feel threatened at the sound of the knifes.

Mise en scene- This is featured in many different ways to subtly explore ideas in the film. One example of this is the contrast between the gangsters and the runts. Lil Zee’s gang often wear bright coloured shirts and jewellery. This is contrast to the “runts” or kids who are living in poverty who wear ragged dirty clothes. This shows the audience the power gap between these two factions and their status as well as making the audience feel bad for them.

Cinematography- An example of the Cinematography is the usage of extreme close up shots. These are used to reinforce the deprivation of poverty within the film. This can be seen with the extreme close up shots of residents of the slums. Dutch angles are also used to disorientate the viewer in intense scenes.

Editing- The main style of editing within the film is cross cutting. This is used to present events occurring at the same time. This is often used to showcase the violent setting and how it effects many people through different narratives. An example of this is the cross cutting between Lil Ze and Carrot’s gang.

City Of God first response

Overall I am rating the film a 9/10. Director Fernando Meireless does a good job of spreading the message of the film in an interesting way. The film is well paced, shot well and has exiting editing. An iconic scene for me is the scene where Lil Ze makes a kid murder another kid. The shock factor of the scene is hooking and show how far gone Lil Ze is and how the the upbringing he had affected his deranged actions now. The scenes cinematography utilizes blurring of the camera lens to show the shock the kid is going through. An iconic image for me is the final shot of the movie. It shows some kids walking down an alleyway with guns saying how their going to go kill people. This shot summarizes the whole movie as it is a loop of Lil Ze and shows the effect the city has on the younger generation.

Pans labyrinth key elements

The mise en scene

The mise en scene of the film is very reflective of elements of horror which can be seen with the dark lighting in a lot of scenes and the costumes of the mystical creatures like the faun. A great example of mise en scene in the film is the scene with the pale man. The set is that of an eerie room with a table of food. The room shows pictures of the pale man eating children which creates a sense of fear in the viewer without the use of narrative.

Cinematography

The Cinematography of the film utilises a lot of handheld tracking shots to show the characters like Ophelia exploring different areas like when she enters the labyrinth for the first time. Cinematographer Guillermo Navarro makes use of a lot of wide shots to establish the scale of the sets to the audience. We can see this with the wide crabbing shot of the ruins of the labyrinth.

Editing

A frequent use of editing within the film is cross cutting between different narratives to show what events are happening at the same time. This editing is used to merge the two narratives together between Ophelia and the soldiers. An example of this is in the scene where the soldiers are riding out into the forest on horseback whereas Ophelia is traveling slowly by foot. This impacts the audience as it allows them to focus on two different narratives as the film stays at the same pace.

Pans labyrinth first response

Overall I am giving the film a 7/10, I thought that the plot was intriguinging and hooking and featured a lot of creative ideas. An iconic scene for me is the scene with the pale man as it shows the horror elements of the film well. The practical effects used in the films for creatures like the faun and the pale man were very well done. However the ending felt rushed and ended too quickly and unsatisfying.

How Iconic Movie Monster “The Pale Man ...

NEA film plan

My film is going to be based off of a non linear narrative in which it follows and includes a narrative. It will follow a man who doesn’t remember where and why he is where he is and the story slowly reveals why he is in the position where he is in a non linear way. I took inspiration from Szifron for the way that there characters find out why they are where slowly as it presented to the audience with build up. I am also going to take inspiration for La Jette as the film is going to be filmed in black and white and follow a film noir style.

Strike Methods of Montage

Intellectual Montage

Intellectual Montage is sued with scenes cutting between the workers and the slaughter of a cow. This is Representative of how the workers are being treated like farm animals and being slaughtered by the government.

Tonal Editing Montage

There is many moments in the film where we see tonal editing montage such as the various scenes of animal abuse throughout the film such as the man kicking the cat. A good example is the scene where a worker is trapped between a door. The use of lighting is used to make his position look more dire and uncomfortable.

Metric Montage

The metric Montages in the film are impact to the story, for example the scene where a the firefighters don’t extinguish the fire on the house.

Over Tonal Montage

A good example of Over Tonal Montage is when the worker are killed by the soldiers , this makes good use of the tone of the film

Rhythmic Montage

A rhythmic montage is used in the scene where a mother is beaten for trying to save her son from the army.

Soviet Contructivism fine art movement.

Soviet Constructivism is an early twentieth century art movement founded in 1915 by Vladimir Tallinn. The purpose of it was in favor of propaganda and social purposes that were associated with Soviet Socialism. An example of this is El Blitzkriegs poster Beat the whites with the red wedge. This had major effects in the 20th century influencing major trends such as architecture, graphic design, industrial design, theater and dance.
