THE STORY OF FILM QUESTIONS PART 3

Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd were all actors and directors of comedy films with each having a unique trademark seen in their movies.

Buster keyton was most known for physical “slapstick” comedy involving a lot of extreme stunt work usually involving heights an example being three ages(1923) where he attempts to jump from one building to another but fails to do so hitting the wall.

Charlie Chaplin was known for his real world commentary within his films being able to relate toward the average viewer playing poor people in many of his films displaying the issues of living in poverty. As well as playing hitler in the great dictator(1940) where he played with a balloon earth representing peoples fear of him at the time.

Harold Lloyd was known for his intense daredevil characters and stunts similar to Buster Keyton. This can be seen in his film safety last(1923) where a guy bravely and recklessly climbs a building facing many dangers along the way like a plank and getting stuck in rope. This inspired many other filmmakers to make more action packed stories with daring characters.

Casablanca representation

Men:

Women:

women are portrayed stereotypically in this film. With the character Ilse relying on Rick to save her having no say or control in what happens.

Authority Figures:

People of colour:

The character of Sam plays a role in the film being related to both of the main characters and their love story in Paris. It may be a minor role but for the time a black man having a part in the plot at all was progressive compared to other films that lacked or mocked people of colour.

Americans:

Europeans:

Bonnie and Clyde representation

Men:

The character of Clyde is more in line with masculine stereotypes being the one that leads the crime spree teaching and guiding them as they go along. He is also the most violent out of the two being able to murder a random civilian without hesitation to get away.

Women:

The character of Bonnie breaks the stereotype of women within the film. As she is seen to engage within the violent behaviour carrying a gun and intimidating the park ranger. She also isn’t shown as inferior to Clyde having a say in decisions not being scared to stand up to him.

Authority figures:

Authority figures are shown as the antagonists throughout the film being an obstacle to Bonnie and Clyde’s criminal activities. In the first half of the film they are mocked examples being when they shoot at the barn in resentment of the bank or when they take menacing pictures with the park ranger. however in the second half they become more of a threat as the ranger is able to get their whereabouts leading to their death.

People of Colour:

Black people are barley represented within the film at all with the only black character being one the farmers who has little to no dialogue. the representation isn’t negative but inequality is still seen through an absent of racially diverse characters.

Working class:

Working class people are portrayed sympathetically having little to no money and are shown as victims of the upper class an example being the farmer who had his house repossessed by the bank. Therefore Bonnie and Clyde are not shown harming the working class but rather the rich in an act to avenge them in some way.

Bonnie and Clyde Editing

The film Bonne and Clyde plays around with it editing breaking the rules by using fast rapid shots and discontinuity editing. An example being the ending scene in which Bonne and Clyde are shot dead with the camera rapidly switching shots between them and the gunmen.

1.LS shot of gunshots through the bushes

2. MS shot of Clyde being shot and falling to the ground

3.MCU reaction shot of Bonne screaming before being shot at

4.reverse LS shot of gunmen in view shooting

The story of film (1903-1918) questions Part 2

film production switched location to Hollywood due to Edison claiming the rights to the film making process meaning a payment was needed in order to use it. Therefore to avoid payment they moved far west into Hollywood to avoid legal trouble. Furthermore Hollywood had consistent weather and natural lighting with was perfect for filmmaking.

Cousins described the Danish film industry as one of the best in the world for its unique lighting, more intellectual stories and more relaxed laws on censorship allowing for more creative freedom unlike the US which was more restrictive on what and wasn’t allowed to be shown in film.

some directors for there include Benjamin Christiansen who created Haxan witch craft through the ages and and Victor Sjostrom who created the phantom carriage.

The film The birth of the nation was directed by D.W Griffith and was one the first full feature film created. However this film has had some controversy due to racist themes in the film with the KKK presented as heroes showing black people as untidy with anti social behaviour promoting the hatred and fear of black people at this time as they started gaining their own rights and starting businesses.

The story of film (1895-1918) questions Part 1

  1. The first film created by the lumiere brothers was titled La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière made in 1895
  2. Phantom rides were a type of early film depicting a vehicle moving towards a location
  3. The films the “The Sick Kitten” and “Life of an American Fireman” were special as they introduced new camera techniques. Being close up shots and reverse shots putting more highlight on filming the actors rather than the set.
  4. The first major film star was a woman named Florence Lawrence who gained fame after appearing in a movie when she was thought to be dead.

Bonnie and Clyde Aesthetics

realism:

The films is closely accurate towards the great depression era of the film. With a rural rundown setting and the struggles of the everyday people playing an important role within the narrative. However With the main characters verisimilitude is messed with a bit having them wear expensive fashionable clothing as well as plot points being exaggerated for entertainment example being the action scenes.

tone:

Bonne and Clyde is a mostly upbeat and suspenseful film with the fast paced action scenes. Has an adventurous and exciting feeling to it as they travel to unknown areas doing criminal activities not previously seen in movies at the time before French new wave.

Visual style:

This film was inspired by the French new wave movement taking many of its visual elements with editing in particular breaking the norm of old Hollywood with an example being the rapid shots used in many scenes like when they are shot dead in the ending.
