NEA film location

I have decided to film at the waterfront and frigate area of st Helier, this gives me a wide variety of natural and street sets which is needed in a script, the area is a public place therefore I am able to film here legally. I will be filming this during night time to match the tone of my film and to limit the number of public members which may interrupt recording.

City of God first response

personal rating: 9/10, characters were really engaging with really good use of cinematography which effectively put the audience in the perspective of the characters.

memorable scene: a memorable scene would be Benny’s death during the party, the mise en scene use of flashing lights and hand held camera movements gave a frantic feeling to the scene being impactful on the audience and the plot.

iconic image: This image is iconic to the film as it depicts a young child violently shooting a gun. This links to the rough aesthetic of the movie chaotically showing the violent upbringings in the slums.

Gender in Pans labyrinth

In Pans labyrinth, Ofelia is treated as inferior for her gender. Having to follow the captains instructions without question having all aspects of her life being controlled down to her cloths. The captain also obsesses over having son as he feels as he would have more power than Ofelia. However in the magic world, Ofelia is seen as a powerful princess who is integral to the world with her return being extremely important opposing her status in the normal world sowing how gender doesn’t really matter

Pans Labyrinth micro elements

Mise en scene: mise en scene is used here in both lighting and set design. The combination of royal, holy appearing room, along with the golden war, lighting gives a grand luxurious feeling to the scene portraying how Ophelia has achieved a higher level when compared to the dark and gritty mise en scene of the normal world.

Cinematography: Camera movements, specifically dolly shots are used frequently throughout the film, and example being the chase from the pale man using a fast dolly cam with hand held camera movements to give a sense of action and high tension.

Sound: Many orchestra style motifs are used within the film connecting to the magic realism of the film with more ambitious music which ties well to the fantasy genre of the film.

Pans Labyrinth first response

i would give the film a 8/10 being a memorable story with with great mise en scene in terms of practical effects in the creatures and location. A memorable scene would be when the girl is being chased by the eye hand monster as it had a huge sense of tension and suspense.

iconic shot:

This shot sums up the film showing off the magical elements of the labyrinth and the sense of mystery as it repeats at the beginning and end coming full circle as well as showing the dark tone of the film being covered in blood.

NEA Plan

My plan for my NEA project is to use a narrator and a distinct genre of crime as required in the specification. This will take inspiration from La Jete using narration to explain the world and keep the audience informed as the story progresses. The genre will also be similar to wild tales stories like the rats involving crime and revenge having the same sense of tension and suspense throughout.

Narrative devices

Narration: a voiceover in a story which explains the plot or establishes the story.

Backstory: an explanation of a characters, location or something else’s past.

Flashback: when the story switch’s to the past in the middle of the story.

Ellipse: leaving out a part of the story for the audience to fill in the gaps.

Cliff hanger: when a story ends abruptly and unresolved.

Macguffin: an object or device that drives the plot that wasnt related to the plot beforehand.

Foreshadowing: when a plot point is hinted at earier on in the story.

Causality: the cause and effect within a story which keeps it going.

In media res: when the plot starts within the middle of the story.

Narrative hook: an interesting thing in the beginning of the plot which makes the audience want to keep watching.

Plot twist: an abrupt change in the story which changes the overall narrative.
