Casablanca representation

men: in Casablanca men are presented as powerful and responsible. this is the stereotype men had when the film was set and the director wanted to keep this stereotype. however when rick meets ilsa he becomes more venerable and shares his feelings. this shows the effect woman have on men i the film

women: in Casablanca women are mostly seen as romantic counterparts for the male characters. Ilsa is the main woman in the film and she loves 2 men at the same time (rick and victor , but she also shows independence by making her own choices such as threating rick with a gun (rick was not phased).

authority figures: in Casablanca authority figures are presented as corrupt weather it be for good or for bad.

people of colours: can be seen through the character of Sam, who challenges stereotypes by being among many white people while performing, in a time where racial segregation was a serious problem.

Europeans

americans

Casablanca aesthetics

realism: the realism in the film is mostly presented by the plot and how it relates to real world events such as WW2. the introduction sets the scene and tells us how so many people ended up in Casablanca which is factually correct.

tone: the tone of the film is mostly light-hearted and romantic and presents a sort of escapism for the audience who’s lives would have been affected by the war at this time

film noir: the film uses a film noir style as it uses lighting that would accommodate a black and whit movie. for example uses bright lighting for lighter scenes and darker lighting for more sadder scenes

Casablanca sound

dialogue: when rick says “everybody in Casablanca has problems yours may work out” he is telling ilsa that her problems are not that big compared to some of the other people who are in Casablanca due to the fact that the may be fighting in the war or have been exiled from there country

underscoring: when Rick shoots the general there is an underscore as this is a monumental point in the plot.

sound motif: when Sam the piano player sings “as time goes by” it reminds ilsa of the old times when she was together with rick and Sam

synchronous music : the music we here at the end of the movie is the same as the music at the start of the movie. this properly tells the audience that the movie is done and finished

sound mixing: The sound of dialogue, piano glasses clinking and background noise is all mixed into one scene

Bonnie and Clyde mise en scene

location: bonnie and Clyde is set rural 1930s America as they travel through towns in Texas, Louisiana, Ohio and Oklahoma. they travel though the south west of America robbing towns and shops. this is set during 1930s so it would be the middle of the great depression.

interior sets: All of the houses in bonnie and Clyde are very nice and aesthetic upon arrival. however when the gang leave the house there are always broken windows and gunshots in the walls and doors. This shows how wanted they are across America.

costumes: Clyde and henry are seen to be wearing suits and waistcoats. this is because this was the suitable clothes for men to wear in America at this time. they also (being bank robbers) would be able to pay for smarter clothes. bonnie is seen in multiple different outfits through the film and these were not as how women would have dressed at the time the film was set but it changed the way women dressed in America

props: most of the props in the film are different handguns that they steal from officers and rangers

Casablanca editing

Casablanca uses continuity editing to give a steady flow to the narrative an example being the scene with the letters of transport

shot 1: MCU eye level shot to show who the scene as about. with the main character being centre of the screen

shot 2: MCU shot of man running out of door. he is blurred as he is moving fast

shot 3: low angle close up to show the mans emotion. the use of a low angle shot shows he’s scared

shot 4; low angle medium shot to capture the man firing his gun

shot 5: eye level medium close up shot. the man is looking up at rick showing that he has the status and authority in this scen. the man is asking rick for help

shot 6: a medium close up eye level shot to show the man getting taken away by the authorities

trainspotting micro elements

sound

in trainspotting various needle drops are used throughout the film. this is normally to set the tone or mood for the scene. one of the most prominent examples of this is the scene in the nightclub where atomic by sleeper plays in the background

editing

in trainspotting a vast majority of the editing is used when Renton is withdrawing from heroine. this is done so we can see how Renton is feeling as he is hallucinating and obviously feeling nauseous.

mise en scene

in this scene mise en scene is used to show a typical pub in the 1990 as how begbie reacts when he is drunk

cinematography

in this scene various angles and shot types are used but here spud is caught in a medium close up side angle

Casablanca mise en scene

costume:

Rick is always seen wearing a white suit. This shows signs of class and is also classic attire of the 1940s. the fact that he’s is the only person wearing white outlines him as the main character

in Casablanca Capitan Renaldas is seen wearing his army uniform with his medals on show. this is because he is proud of his achievements

props:

this is a plane in the 1940s. you can see that the plane is smaller and looks more rickety. it has propellers instead of engines as they were not invented yet

in the film the actors are mostly all smoking. this is because in this time it was normal to smoke inside and wasnt frowned upon

locations:

sets:

sets can be used to give us information about the film that is not said or given. for example the weather at the runway shows us that rick is sad Lisa is leaving and that it will be a dangerous journey
