Un Chien Andalou (Response)

I’d give this a 7/10

I enjoyed the creativity and multitude of absurd scenes that linked together through this one woman. However I feel like it was trying to tell a story which made me want to understand what was happening, e.g the passing of time, and this left me more confused, and slightly frustrated at times, however as a whole it was enjoyable.

A scene that stood out for me was the man pulling the men + piano + cows. Despite the disturbing imagery, it was quite humorous to see just how much this one man was pulling.

Chien Andalou First response

I would give this film a 4/10, I felt they went to far with the surrealism to the point where the movie made no sense and was needlessly vulgar, a memorable scene to me was the man with the bugs coming out of his hands as it recurred throughout the movie and was treated with a sense of shock.

Un Chien Andalou First Response + Task

Rating – 7/10

A memorable scene in the film for me was the insects bursting out the man’s hand, due to the unsettling and disturbing nature of the visuals that create a sense of fear and disgust.

Explain how the specific socio-historical contexts (first half of the 20th century) may have influenced the work of the early surrealist filmmakers – Following the first world war, artists and filmmakers adopted the surrealism movement to express their freedom from oppressors and used their work to imitate that of the unconscious mind and dreams. Early surrealist directors like Dali and Bunuel may have used imagery that signifies fear to remind audiences what kind of world they were leaving in just a few years prior, where they felt those emotions everyday.
