Pans labyrinth First Response

Overall I would give the film a solid 8 out of 10. the plot and the cinematography was really good as was the narrative structure of the film. one of the most memorable scenes for me would be the scene with the eye monster or the scene when the captain is shaving and his face is cut.

However one thing that annoyed me was the ending

this is my iconic shot as this scene makes Capitan Vidal look like an iconic villain.

Pan’s Labyrinth/First Response – George Blake

9/10 – I gave this film this rating as I find that It was very interesting in terms of its narrative and plot. A memorable scene for me was the scene where Ofelia has to complete her second task within the room of the pale man, with the use of prosthetic make up and costume, this to me was a notable scene as it created a good effect of verisimilitude to the appearance of the pale man being believable and life-like. To me this was an iconic shot as before watching, this was a scene I had recognised from its cemented place within cinema.

Pan’s Labyrinth First Response

  1. 8/10
  2. Most memorable scene – The Lullaby. I think this scene encapsulates the abandonment and loneliness Ofelia feels having been separated from her mother, finding comfort in Mercedes, who acts as a maternal figure in the meantime. It stands out to me as they both are governed by Captain Vidal, a violent and unforgiving man that terrorizes them and essentially traps them.

3) Iconic image

The shallow depth of focus adds to the horrific nature of the film, and makes the ‘pale man’ appear even more inhumane and threatening. Additionally the fact that the shot is dimly lit adds to the dark and eery themes of the film.

Pan’s labyrinth First Response

I would give the film an 8/10

A memorable scene for me is when we first see Vidal torture a man for suspicion that he is a member of the opposing side. We see him stone faced as he bludgeons his nose again and again while the father of the victim watches. This is when we see how heartless and evil this man is. The editing is a shot reverse shot between the victim and Vidal, and this emphasises how unfazed Vidal is by his own brutal actions. The sound also helps as all we here is the disturbing impact sound between the bottle and nose through out.

The iconic image that I have chosen is is the introduction of the pale man creature. This creature is undoubtable the most terrifying thing in the whole movie, and sets the tone for what this movie represents, a horrific journey.

7/10

For me the most memorable scene was the one with the pale man. This scene is memorable because of the costume and setting. The costume is pretty much flawless and shows how much care was put into the make up with the the prosthetics. The dinning hall was detailed and the paintings on the ceiling of the horrible acts the pale man has committed helped to emphasise the danger Ofelia is in.

Pan’s Labyrinth First Response

Score – 9/10

A memorable scene for me is when Ofelia first meets the Faun, since it is the first time in the film we see any kind of ‘magical’ character, with the dark lighting making it harder for the audience to interpret what the Faun’s intentions are and the performance adding a sense of believability that it is an ancient creature.

An iconic shot from the film is that of the Captain dying infront of the resistance members, since it creates an oppositional image from the rest of the film, in which the Captain maintained power and killed resistance members.

Iconic shot in Pans labyrinth

i chose this as my iconic shot because it showed how much they really did love each other and they use each other for safety, this summed up the film for me because it really set an opinion on Ofelia and that even though she was going to leave to the afterlife she still had a bond with her mother that cannot be broken.

Pan’s Labyrinth First Response

Score – I would give this film an 9/10 because I thought the plot was really creative and I was very drawn into it a lot of the time, however I do think some of the ending was a bit unexplained (as in what happened to Mercedes and the others) which is why I rated it less than a 10.

Memorable scene

This scene was the most memorable for me because this was the moment Ofelia and us as the audience realised how powerful the magic was and how it affected the mother.
