The directors of the movie chose him to play the role of a German officer as he can create an authentic character to play the role. He often plays villains such as his role in The Man Who Laughs. He had a good relationship with Hollywood and was famous before Casablanca and I think he was cast for the movie due to his recognition from the audience.
- Peter Lorre was very famous before Casablanca and starred in a lot of horror movies. He was cast for these kind of roles due to looking undesirable which is shown in his role in Casablanca where he plays a supportive character who doesn’t contribute much to the movie. Movies he appeared in was M, The Maltese falcon, The man who knew too much and Mad Love.
- Dooley Wilson Appeared in a few movies before Casablanca such as Cairo and Take a letter Darling. He was chosen for his role in Casablanca due to upbeat and happy nature which fits his role as Sam in the movie. He was was under contract for $550 a week by Warner Bros.

Casablanca Task 1 – George Blake
Humphrey Bogart before filming Casablanca had already been a Hollywood star. Appearing in ‘High Sierra’ in 1940 and ‘The Maltese Falcon’ in 1941 he was already a recognisable actor for his stern, brutish nature on screen. Being paid $550 a week during filming, he would later sign a 15-year contract with them in 1946.
Paul Henreid was another star made famous before Casablanca, being in films such as ‘Goodbye, Mr Chips’ in 1939 and ‘Now, Voyager’ in 1942. Henreid signed a contract with Warner Bros for 75,000 dollars in 1942. Known for his sympathetic roles he was mainly portrayed as a charming lover similar on screen to Ryan Gosling today.
Ingrid Bergman had been in a fair few films prior to Casablanca, these include ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ in 1941 and ‘A Woman’s Face’ in 1938. Usually portrayed as the love interest in Romantic Dramas.
Conrad Veidt, famous for his silent films such as ‘The Man Who Laughs’ in 1928, which would later go on to inspire the DC character ‘Joker’. Often playing the villain, this can be seen in Casablanca where due to being part German it landed him the role of playing the Nazi Major Heinrich Strasser. For Casablanca, Warner Bros had borrowed him from M-G-M for 25,000 dollars.
Peter Lorre, who had already worked with Bogart on ‘The Maltese Falcon’ and famous for the Weimar era film ‘M’ which released in 1931. Due to his Jewish descent, he escaped Germany and moved to the US and began a career in Hollywood. After Casablanca in 1943, Lorre had signed a 5-year contract with Warner Bros. Usually playing a anti-hero role his most known role was in ‘M’ when he portrayed a child-killer and the Bond villain in the TV version of Casino Royale in 1954.

Casablanca Task 1
Humphrey Bogart had already starred in The Maltese Falcon, another Warner Bros film, the year before Casablanca released. Due to The Maltese Falcon being a success for the studio, they were likely confident casting Bogart in Casablanca would appeal to audiences more than an unknown actor would. In 1946, Bogart signed a 15-year contract with Warner Bros.
Ingrid Bergman also had starred in films before Casablanca, such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, an MGM film, however Casablanca was her first film with WB.
Paul Henreid had starred in films such as Joan of Paris and Now, Voyager (the latter being a Warner Bros film) prior to the film. He also had a contract with Warner Bros, notably because of his accent.
Claude Rains was well known for his ‘character actor’ roles in horror films from Universal Pictures such as The Invisible Man (1933) and The Wolf Man (1941), so being cast in a romantic drama such as Casablanca was a departure from his previous roles, aswell as being with a different studio.
Conrad Veidt was the highest paid actor from Casablanca, and was a famous actor in the 20s for silent films such as The Man Who Laughs (which was the inspiration for the character of the Joker) and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Veidt died not long after Casablanca had released.
Sydney Greenstreet, a British actor, was well known for his collaborations with Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre, not only Casablanca but also The Maltese Falcon and Passage to Marseille.
Peter Lorre was recognised for the German film M (1931), directed by Fritz Lang, in which he portrayed a serial child killer. Following The Nazi Party coming to power in Germany, Lorre left Germany and went to Hollywood, where he began working with Bogart and Warner Bros.
