the birth of hollywood (1900 – 1930)

  1. film makers and producers moved to Hollywood, along with their business from New York in search of a more consistent climate for round-the-year film shooting and to escape fees imposed by Tomas Edison, who owned many patents on the movie-making process.
  2. silent film stars include Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. directors include Sergei Eisenstein, Tod Browning. popular pictures include ‘The gold rush’ (1925) and ‘The circus’ (1928) both starring Charlie Chaplin.
  3. Referred to as ‘The Dream Factory’, (Hollywood in its heyday). Every week, 10 or more films came off the studios’ assembly lines.
  4. the first Hollywood talking picture was ‘The jazz singer’ (1927)
  5. The silent era of film created issues for actors as they where expected to know what to do without directors comments.
  6. in this time period, the great depression was going on causing failed businesses as well as unemployment and financial struggles.
