aesthetics – tone definitions

pathos – the persuasive technique that appeals to an audience through emotions

bathos – the sudden appearance of a silly idea or event in a book, movie discussion, etc.. , that is serious in tone

suspense – a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen

comedy – professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches, intended to make an audience laugh

dramatic irony – occurs when the audience knows something that the characters don’t

distancing effect (verfremdung) – the distancing effect is achieved by the way the “artist never acts as if there were a fourth wall besides the three surrounding him … The audience can no longer have the illusion of being the unseen spectator at an event which is really taking place”

postmodern humour – the saturation of slippages and meanings prevent a solid linkage of humorous and serious meaning
