This is England First Response

Score: 9/10

Most memorable scene: The opening montage

To me, the first scene perfectly sets the ‘Englishness’ of the movie – outlining the bad qualities of England (war, violence prejudice) but also the ‘proud to be British’ moments. This fight over England’s best and worst aspects is apparent throughout the film and shapes how, not only, Shaun idolises the people around him, but also how he feels about England.

score- 7/10

The most memorable scene for me was when they all walk in slow motion after Shaun gets his head shaved and joins the Skinheads. I thought this showed the inclusivity and strive and pride to be English very well (even though this is shortly later disrupted.) 1980’s England is shown well through the verisimilitude, set, and costume design followed by hair and makeup. the mise en scene is the best.

I would give the movie a 6/10. I felt it had some very hard hitting powerful scenes and portrayed the message of anti racism very well. My favourite scene being the one between combo and milky right before he is beaten as there was a very extreme sense of tension, good acting and good cinematography.

i think the movie is 10/10. The film exceeded in balancing heavy tones with funny ones. It used a variety of different shots and angles which also added to its quality. My most memorable scene is when Shaun and Combo and his friends raid the corner shop, this shows the bad influence combo had on Shaun.

Score – 8/10

Memorable Scene – The scene where Combo pulls a knife out at the corner shop and they all steal things from the shop and threaten the owner. For me this scene is the most memorable because it’s the scene that changes the tone of the film into a really dark and sketchy narrative.

‘This is England’ First response

I’ll give this film a 8/10

A memorable scene for me is just after the rally speech, and it went on a montage of Shawn and the others abusing citizens. This is because it would cut away to Shawn laughing, smiling and agreeing with this racist ideology which really struck me as children of Shawn’s age are supposed to be pure and innocent, and this is when we as an audience realise how gang life has corrupted and brainwashed him.
