Film set

The example that I chose was from Lord Of The Rings (By Peter Jackson, 2001) , which was filmed in New Zealand. I chose this because the location was interesting enough to allow the audience to be transported into the atmosphere and world of the film. It is also not too complex and uses basic ideas to seem realistic enough to the audience

set design example

i chose this example of set design from the Matrix ( dir Wachowski siblings , 1999) because it fits into the distinctive world of the film   and it has the green color pallet  that the film is quite famous for , this particular example helps to immerse you in the world of the film and it creates a distinctive mood as you are watching it.

Activity 3

The current top 10 shows a lot for a formula of success for a film. The main thing shown from all these movies is the market for action films is very popular with all films in the top 10 having some type of action included into the film. With this part incorporated  into the film, its guarantee for a success as the film doesn’t even need to have good review scores or audience scores to gain profit such as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom what has both an average critic review and audience score around 50% on rotten tomatoes. However it helps this film and any other film on the list what comes from an existing film franchise like Marvel or Jurassic park. A major example of this is Tang Ren Jie Tan An 2 (Detective Chinatown 2) what gained a $400 million more than the original film at the box office.

Another formula for success what is shown from the top 10 is the studios attached to the films with 4 films distributed by Disney what also shows that they use a good part of the film budget on marketing. A key for a successful movie is to put a good amount towards marketing as it cost an estimated $140 million for both the marketing of Avengers:Infinity War and Black Panther as examples. While also the the fact Disney is involved with these films is enough to sell to different market audiences such as families as there image alone is enough to promote their movies. So a good studio backing a movie is a very helpful to make a profitable movie.

Licensing helps movies as 4 movies have the use of marvel comics characters what further proves that source material helps a movie. The reason for this is it brings an existing fanbase with the material used for the film what will give the film an audience before the films release. With 4 films based on comic books while Ready Player One is based on a book what was a bestseller in 20 different languages, what helps internationally at the box office with using an original source.

Activity 1 – IB Learner in Film

Caring:

Helps people to fully share ideas more securely

Risk-Takers:

This will help in Film Studies as taking risks can  result in creating above average content that   perhaps no one else was willing to do.

Communicators:

Allows us to relay ideas and give constructive                                                    feedback

Inquirers:

It will help in Film Studies as there are so many ways to    interpret  film, and questioning the reasons for certain  directive decisions can help find out the director’s, and  your own, interpretation.

Principled:

It will help in Film Studies that  when you come to make    your own content you are most likely to stick to your   messages and values.

Balanced:

It helps you to make a neutral decision on your ideas  when opposing others and makes you less biased.

Open-Minded:

It helps as it leaves you welcome to all ideas and lets   you embrace ideologies whether you agree or not.

Reflective:

It helps in film studies as the more reflective you are, the more you want to retry mistakes and be as honest   as you can with your work

Activity 2 – Box Office Task

The current standings for the box office as of now are:

  1. Avengers: Infinity War
  2. Black Panther
  3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  4. Incredibles 2
  5. Deadpool 2
  6. Mission: Impossible – Fallout
  7. Ant-Man and the Wasp
  8. Ready Player One
  9. Hong Hai Xing Dong
  10. Tang Ren Jie Tan An 2

The majority of films that are on this list are considerably reliant on special effects and the genre of action, which would imply the industry has noticed they have become a good investment, following the successes of superhero movies,  most notably the Marvel franchise.

This may be to do with a struggle to entice people to visit the cinema, as there are so many platforms that allow you to watch movies with relatively more convenience. This also has made the mass audience a lot less open minded on welcoming unknown content, which at home they can turn off immediately, unavailable when at the cinema.

Therefore, it can be argued people are now adamant to visit the cinema, which studios have started to try and bypass by choosing to create adapted content, or continuing on franchises of older movies. It offers people a secure choice that when they see it advertised, they resonate with it and are more willing to see it.

This can be proven significantly with the current standings on the box office, with 8 either being a sequel of a created movie, or an adaptation on original content. This solidifies the modern intent of film creators, but is sadly detrimental to the film culture as a whole. It is unlikely this generation will be remembered upon as a time of cinema classic that it had the potential to be, with our modernized technology and communication.

Activity 3

The Box office top 10 movie includes: Blank Panther ($700,059,566), Avengers: infinity War ($678,815,482), Incredibles 2 ($605,633,025), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($416,282,080), Deadpool 2 ($318,468,882), Mission: Impossible – Fallout ($216,135,337), Ant-Man and the Wasp ($215,410,791), Solo: A Star Wars Story ($213,765,754), A Quiet Place ($188,024,361), Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ($165,261,099).

All of these films have the genre of action in common. The movie plots in which there is a villain creating a situation for a hero to solve is involved with the majority of these movies. Another thing in common is that these movies have all been adapted to having sequels and some are even franchises such as Avengers. These types of action movies could be popular due to famous stars being casted, CGI and special effects. Special effects also reduce the price it costs to produce these movies due to the explosions being unreal, whereas movies back in the day would cost fortunes to fake a real explosion. Due to the price costing less to produce the films, it means that highly known actors can be made more for their appearance due to the budget expansion.

Due to most of these films being sequels, or belonging to a franchise, it holds a promise to the fans that they will see more of the plot if they stay interested. Many famous actors are involved in the films such as Chris Pratt: in the Jurassic World movies and Chris Hemsworth who stars in Avengers: Infinity War. These actors are capable of attracting a wider audience.

In conclusion, most successful films have wide view ranges due to multiple factors: Actors drawing in certain audiences, impressive special effects, plots that draw you in and belong to a franchise for the audiences to stay involved.

Spike Lee Task

Spike Lee

I think that Spike Lee is wrong because I don’t think that you do have to be a member of an ethnic group to be able to direct or be part of a film. I think that if you enforce it then by extent you’ll have to say that you can only make films that address something about a certain racial or ethnic group if you belong in that group and I think that that is a bad idea as it’ll essentially only draw lines between different communities. I think that if you are going to do a film about a sensitive topic you should do your best to do the research about it and try to not manipulate things even if they might be more profitable
