Arnold Newman was born on march 3 1918 in New York City. He attended school in Atlanta and Miami beach Florida. Arnold Newman’s photography looks at people in there working place or in a location that has meaning to them and is relatable to them, his work is mainly Environmental Portraits of artists and politicians, most of his photos are in black and white and his photos are quite formal but also very raw and true to life as he captures them in specific moments like when they are at work or doing a hobby they are interested in. The models he is taking pictures of are sometimes posing for the camera than having a picture taken of them when they are working in there environment, which makes the pictures formal.
Arnold Newman also took a picture of Alfred Krupp and took a picture of him when the light was just perfect on his face and made him loo like the malicious man that he was, in the background there was the train station where he had all the supplies for the Nazi war and showcased that he did horrible things in the war and worked people to death he used concentration camp prisoners as labour workers, and then published the photo that krupp specifically said o delete making him known as a horrible man to the rest of the world.
An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject’s usual environment, such as in their home or workplace, and typically illuminates the subject’s life and surroundings. The term is most frequently used as a genre of photography.
Environmental Portrait ideas
I think Environmental Portraits show the background and the history of the person and that it shows who they are and what job they do or there career. The portrait should capture what the person does. The Environmental portrait can also capture where the person you are photographing is from or where they grew up and taking them to the locations of where they spent their childhoods. It could also represent what hobbies the person likes to do or what they are interested in or it could be a place or an area that they are typically in and reflects what they love.
The shape and the colour of the objects contrast between the white background and make the handle of the object stand out and also helps make the other object stand out against the coloured background.
These are my final images for the Single Object photoshoot as they capture the “Wonders of the common tool” the best out of all other images and they make the objects used look much more fascinating than they would before.
These are the edits of my virtual gallery and the process of completing it with more of my photos. To improve my virtual gallery I could crop the image of the violin and get rid of the dark edges because the background of the photo draws your eye to the sides of the image where its not the same colour instead of the main object which is the focus of the photo.
I edited the tint of the background of my photo so that it was a brighter white and didn’t have the yellowish tint to it which made the object not stand out as much because the object was lost in the background. I also made the shadows a lot darker because the contrast between the object and the background in the original image didn’t give the object any depth or size it made the image look flat and uninteresting.
These are my photos inspired by Darren Harvey-Regan “The wonders of the common tool.” The shadows on the objects give that contrast between the light background and the dark objects which makes the object look more in focus and makes it stand out. To improve these photos I’m going to change the background colour and make it whiter to get rid of the orange tint on the photos.
This image is my best image because the tilted angle of the violin along with the placement of the objects makes the image very pleasing to look at and the angle and shape of the violin complements the other objects by making them become more visible so they are not washed out by the violin.
This is another strong image as the colour contrast between the snow globe and the violin makes both objects stand out as the colours compliment each other making the violin look darker and a stronger colour of brown and the snow globe a brighter white.
Walker Evans was an American Photographer and photojournalist, best known for his work for the farm Administration documenting the effects of the Great Depression. He died April 10th 1975. His most characteristic pictures show American life through outdoor advertising, the beginnings of its automobile culture and its domestic interiors.
Image Analysis
Walker Evans takes pictures with a narrow depth of field to keep the man in focus. The pictures are in black and white which gives the pictures a dramatic and ominous feel to them. Walker Evans pictures are very true and honest which makes his pictures believable and his models don’t hide and everything is very raw and exposed. The black background that the man is leaning against contrasts against his white shirt giving a sense of positive and negative feelings about America in the time of the Great Depression.
Darren Harvey-Regan
Darren Harvey-Regan is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. His work has been in Exhibitions and Publications all over the world. His work focuses on photography but has an emphasis on the mediums relationship to language and to sculpture.
Image Analysis
Darren Harvey-Regan’s photos are very bold and powerful and this picture in particular has a very strong contrast between the block and the shadow. This makes the object used stand out and look more powerful. The use of shape and line in this image makes the object appear more interesting to look at and gives the object a different composition. Darren Harvey-Regan’s photos were inspired by Walker Evans photos because Darren Harvey Regan constructed a montage of Evans’s images and made new forms out of them and then sourced matching tools, cut them in half and joined various different half’s together with the resulting physical objects being photographed to create his final work.
