For my second shoot I decided to go more out west (St Brelade’s and St Ouen’s) to photograph some old buildings but mainly modern buildings.

As I wasn’t very happy with this shoot when I went through them all and made my first selection using ‘X’ and ‘P’ I cut quite a lot of them out either because they were blurry, too close or far away or I just didn’t like them. I then made a second selection to make a final pick of images.

Photobook: The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer – Alessandra Sanguinetti

The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer is telling a story about two cousins, through a series of staged images which documents their childhood.

Alessandra Sanguinetti made this book to show the relationship between the two cousins. Sanguinetti started taking images of the cousins when they were nine as she first met them when she was working on another project. Sanguinetti stated that “something in the pair reminded her of the summers she spent as a child in the Argentine countryside” which were ultimately the happiest times in her life. Sanguinetti then worked with Guille and Belinda over the next 21 years, documenting how they change over time and how their relationship with the camera develops. Sanguinetti would film and take photos of the girls, capturing the special moments. The majority of the images were taken near Sanguinetti’s fathers farm, in the farm house. Sanguinetti focused in key themes such as girlhood, love, and family which is demonstrated by the images within the book. In a way Sanguinetti’s book acts as a photo album for the family as it shows how the girls have grown up and changed through out the years.

The book feels heavy due to its many pages and hard cover, which is soft in texture with a square image in the middle of it which continues when you open the book. The book is structured so there is one image per two page spread. Each image is in a square format on an A4 page, centred in the middle of the page surrounded by a white boarder. This is a constant theme throughout the book which gives the book a family photo album feel. The title of the book is written in gold front along the spine of the book along with Sanguinetti’s name. Deconstructing a photobook

Photobook: ILLUMINANCE

Rinko Kawauchi’s photobook named ‘Illuminance’ doesn’t have a consistent story throughout. However, each double page spread contains its own story. The book is pieced together by images that Kawauchi has taken throughout a long period of time; around 15 years of work that is both commissioned and personal projects. She lets the viewer interpret the images by presenting the images with no comments. The genre of her photobook is possibly surrealism, childhood memories or just everyday life experiences. She has a variety of subject matters, ranging from light, nature, water, people and more.

‘In Illuminance, Kawauchi continues her exploration of the extraordinary in the mundane, drawn to the fundamental cycles of life and the seemingly inadvertent, fractal-like organization of the natural world into formal patterns.’ [1]

“The world is connected by what we cannot see,”

“in times of despair if we hold on to the things we believe are beautiful in life, that energy will change and affect the world in a positive way.” – Kawauchi [2]

Kawauchi’s book seems to be a form of hope, evoking emotions that show what she finds important for her. An example of this was when she ventured out into the aftermath of a tsunami and earthquake in her country. She used her Rolleiflex and captured shots of the scene, in her simple but effective milky-hued style. Her book is possibly aimed at people who feel the same emotions as her about life, attempting to find hope in the small beauties of life.

3. Deconstruct the narrative, concept and design of the book and apply theory above when considering:

The book immediately feels heavy and tick, due to its folded pages and hard cover. Kawauchi has probably done this purposefully, not only to produce a strong long-lasting book, but to represent the amount of images and time it took her to capture all the photos.

The cover has a soft touch to it, with a cotton cover. This creates a warm and safe emotion when holding the book. There is also texture in the title, which is imprinted dots placed together to make the name. The title is a reflective surface, meaning it catches and reflects the light. By doing this, it is presenting a snippet of what is in the book: many images are focused on light. The title is quite literal, because one of Kawauchi’s main photography style if focusing on light, and capturing it in create and contemporary ways. However, the title could also be symbolic of Kawauchi illuminating life, and the beauty of it.

Every image is in a square format on an A4 page, placed in the same spot to keep a consistency throughout. It creates a polaroid feel, adding to the sense of nostalgia, as if you are holding a printed polaroid. The folded pages help give this feel.

The book is held together by Japanese binding, keeping Kawauchi’s culture in every aspect of the book. It is carefully constructed from design to the order of the photos. She has reversed the signatures in the binding of the book to create a folded page. At first it seems confusing, however it also lead me to think there was something hidden in the pages, also linking each photo to each other as if they are ‘attached’. She has also used swiss binding, which I find opens the book up more, possibly making the viewer feel like they are entering her world through the book.

The book carries a recurring motif of circles from start to finish, commencing with what appears to be a solar eclipse and concluding with a photograph from the same series later on. While the sun remains concealed in the initial image, it emerges in the final one, suggesting that Kuwauchi could have created a hidden meaning that this book sheds light on her career or the viewer because they have been immersed into her creative life and skills. Each page establishes a visual continuity with the next, whether through circular forms, hand motifs, shared color palettes, similar textures, or juxtaposed elements. While there isn’t a singular broad theme that is fully explained in her photography, the images collectively evoke a palpable impact, drawing emotions through her distinctive aesthetic. Overall, her artistic output incorporates elements of surrealism, as her images transport the viewer into an alternate realm, evoking novel and profound emotions.

Analysis of a page

(I have included further analysis in my earlier blog post ‘Rinko Kawauchi’)

It took me a while to understand the meaning behind these two images, but I came to understand that both images represent some sort of death. The image on the left presents prolonged death by choice, as cigarettes are used to satisfy its user, but is followed by consequences such as death. The image on the right also shows death, but not by choice. It is also a death generated by humans, with the intention to satisfy a user (the fish will be sold for enjoyment). I think Kawauchi was really clever placing these images together, each creating an idea of possible suffocation, maybe relating to how she feels as a photographer. I also took into consideration that this was her first book sold worldwide, and this could be her illustrating how she felt subject to Japan.

Photoshoot 1

This aim of this photoshoot was to represent the freedom in having our cars.

I took images from different angles, in around the car. The idea was to create some images in dim lighting with subtle lights and long exposure pictures. I didn’t really help myself with this specific photo shoot as it was done in the evening, after daylight. This caused us to have a lack of natural lighting from anywhere, therefore we had to use artificial lighting from our phones, the cars interior lights and street lights. I also tried using the flash on the camera, however, it was way too overexposed and wasn’t the aesthetic I’m going for at all.

Another reason why the lighting was failing this shoot was the fact the camera would not focus, this was difficult to deal with because if I used too much lighting from our phones it appeared too forced, but with not enough light, the camera had nothing to focus on.

Image Analysis

Although the camera not focusing resulted in me not having a lot of high quality images, the long exposure created these perfectly blurred images (as shown above) which match the vibe of my personal study, the idea of freedom, runaways. It injects a sense of movement. The blur maintains the aesthetic of my images, it de-emphasizes the unnecessary information yet the viewer can still tell what is in the image.

I wasn’t sure on this image at first as the quality is not great on it but I like the composition and the Rembrandt lighting effect on the face.

This is a spontaneous image, I want to capture images that represent girlhood and that is why I like this image and have chosen it as one of my final images. It was taken in a candid way, capturing the eye contact and smiles.

These two images were staged and also a different take from the original plan of my project. However, when thinking about my final photo book, I think it will be interesting to have some staged portraits, in contrast to rural setting candid photos; this will break up the photo book a bit.

Projector Photoshoot

The idea behind this photoshoot was to represent a place that had a lot of meaning to both me and my mum, which was a place both of us have grown up in. I wanted to represent them in a different way then just including the images I have taken over the last summer, therefore II had an idea to project them onto me. To show not only where I came from but that it is still a part of me.

Sub-Selection

A couple of them came out blurrier than I though, due to me moving a lot and the shutter speed being low. However I made a selection of my favourite ones, that came out in good resolution, and their composition was right.

Editing

I didn’t end up with many final outcomes, however the ones that I was left with were a good quality and the landscape projected onto the body was clear to see.

Still life Photoshoot

For this photoshoot I have picked out items which were important to my mum as well as me as well as items that showed a link between us, like the ultrasound which she kept and the brace I was given after being born. Some other items include toys I used to play with as well as some shells which are important to my mum.

Editing

I was quite minimal with the editing process when it came to the images as I wanted to keep it simple, just in case I could use them for alterations. The first idea to use them as a response to another image, therefore I could always go back and change the setting to suit it better for a responding image.

Some of them i had to neutralise, by discolouring them to make them look like they haven’t been edited, when in reality they have.

Final Photographs

Most of these images would be a great use when it comes to a collage, or by cutting them out so I’ m left with just the object. however if they were alone it might seem quite uninteresting.

Photoshoot Mum

As the project is mainly about my mother, i needed to show how as she is now, to introduce the link about her past to her present, to show how her past shaped the person she is now. to take these images i used a single light to the side of her, and a digital camera. these photos were taken at home, against a plain wall. I originally wanted to use the sun to my advantage as the main source of lighting, however because of the time of year it was difficult to do so as the sun setts quickly. instead i used a phone torch and the lighting from the sceeling.

I have selcted the images that to me where up to their bbest quality and resolution.

Editing

From the sub-selection I have started to edit the photographs. I made minimal changes as I planed to distort them later on, therefore I didn’t wanted to have too much going on.

These were the settings for the first image editing, I tried different editing styles, including filters and changing different settings to achieve different results. I was happy with all but i knew that once i found the right one i was going to stick with it and make all the wanted photographs to be edited in that style.

As I was trying different editing techniques and settings, the outcome above, compared to the one bellow shows how different they are. This also shows me a certain mood that each one creates, like for example the first one has a futuristic look due to the amount of colours. However the one bellow looks like it was taken on an older camera, which gives a nostalgic feel to the image.

Photoshoot archives

I needed to gather images which showed my mums past as well as my own. this is because the project was based about the past, with some links to the present. to gather the material i looked through photo albums and family albums. I picked photographs that represented the past the most, as well as showed a story through them. I also tried to select some that would be easy to recreate through me.

To photograph the images i have used a tripod with attachments that allowed the camera to rest above the photographs.

Sub Selection

I have cropped them so that no borders are visible, from then on the images are ready to be printed off to be worked with manually or to be further edited it i wanted to include them as they are in the photobook.

Photoshoot Planing

Photoshoot 1

  • Who– I will be focusing on my mum to begin with. I will need to produce portrait photographs of her as the book will be mainly about her.
  • Where– as I wont be able to have a professional studio, where this would be ideal for this kind of portraits, i will have to photograph at home against a plain background.
  • When– the best would be to do this near a window to get natural lighting, therefore during daytime, maybe during golden hour, so early in the morning or just before the sunset I could use the lighting to my advantage as it would be the strongest.
  • How– using the digital camera the setting would depend on the lighting, however these would be standard portraits where I will take them straight on from the subject.
  • Why– so I can show who the book is about as well as be able to distort the images later on and play around with sowing, cutting and collaging them. these photographs therefore have to be quite plain in backroad so it doesn’t clash with the alterations, similar to Jessa Fairbrothers’ work, the portraits she produced of her mother.

Photoshoot 2

  • what- items that are personal belongings to my mum and to me, these would be items from my childhood like a teddy or toys. The items I would use need to be not only personal but hold meaning behind them, this for example being a wrist band of the day I was born or the wrist bant of my mum when she was born.
  • where- in the school studio, so I can access professional equipment, especially the backdrop which i used at the beginning of still life module. I will also have access to different light like a diffused one or sharper lighting which i have more freedom personalising
  • When- since this is going to be done in the studio with artificial light, the time of day doesn’t influence how the photographs will turn out. But since its the schools studio I will have to during the school hours.
  • how- I will use the backdrop available in school as well as using a tripod to station my camera, this will ensure the photographs to come out to their best quality. Since they are stationary objects and I’m using a tripod, I could lower the shutter speed, but the settings in the digital camera will depend on the lighting.
  • why- so I can show my mums past as well as mine in a different form then just old images. I believe items hold so much meaning behind them therefore it is a necessity to use them for this project.

Photoshoot 3

  • Who- me, I will need to set up a camera on a tripod to photographs myself in a similar style to the portraits of my mum
  • where- using the school studio, during school hours
  • how- using tools ill have access to like a tripod, a lead so i can press when the camera will take the photograph, lights like diffused light and straight light, mainly white like. This would be done against the white background.
  • why-so I can make a visual link between me and my mum, when these are compared next to each other it will be easier to see similarities between us as well as the differences. these images can also be used to alter them like planed with the first photoshoot. techniques like sawing, using bleach, burning, or other types of distortion that can be done physically.

Other photoshoot ideas

I can start introducing landscapes that show the important places that both me and my mum grew up in. this could be done by digitally distorting the images or editiing in a way where the backroud can be rrepresenting these places.

Overall with the photoshoots I have planned to show the story and narrative of the book. I want to produce as many outcomes as possible that are different to each other. This being landscapes, still life and portraits. I want to dive into each of those genres and alter them manually through different techniques. I hope the outcomes have a certain theme and I will have a lot of freedom to experiment with my images.
