I took these se of images at Rozel football pitch. These images are important to me as this is the pitch belongs to the first club I played for.

Basic Editing

I chose to edit these image in a mix of coloured images and black and white images as this is the pitch where me and my sister would train together for Rozel girls on a Saturday. This is a key part of both our childhoods as we both shared a love for football. I decided to edit the training pitch images in black and white to show that these images hold memories and are from our past. I then decided to edit the main pitch images in colour as I still play at this pitch and it’s still apart of our lives as my sister comes and watches me paly.

Image selection- I selected the images that I though were good enough to be edited by using ‘P’ and ‘X’

Basic Edits

When editing these I wanted to show that this pitch isn’t from my childhood as most of the images are in colour. I wanted the images to be quite vibrant and lively as this pitch is currently apart of mine and my sisters life’s as she come to watch me play here

I then colour coded my images to help me with the process of deciding what images I want to put in my photobook

Basic Editing

When editing these images I wanted some of them be in colour as this pitch is still part of my life but now as a coach instead of a player. I also edited some images in black and white to show that this pitch is part of past.

I then went through my images and colour coded them on weather I wanted them in my photobook or not.

Artist study- Justine Kurland

Justine Kurland is an American photographer who is famous for her book of ‘girl pictures’ which includes images of girls in rural landscapes, focusing on the theme of femininity. There is a sense of freedom throughout the images as the teenage girls are seen to be exploring nature with no care in the world, not worrying about judgement that would typically come from males. Kurland’s images were inspired by the after-school TV special. She also channelled her “raw, angry energy of girl bands”, into her photographs she took of teenage girls.

Justine Kurland stated by taking photos of a teenage girl called Alyssum, who was the daughter of a guy she was dating. Some could say that Alyssum was a rebellious child as she was known for skipping school and smoking pot, which is why Kurland decided she would start to take photos of her. They both came up with the idea that Alyssum would be the subject, know as the ‘teenage runaway.’

Kurland then decided to expand her cast, she added some collage freshmen and any teenage girls that genuinely wanted to collaborate with her. The teenage girls were known as the ‘runaways’, they built forts in forests, which can be seen in the images.

In my opinion, Justine Kurland’s work relates to the theme of felinity as her images show teenage girls that have been given freedom. I like how there is a sense of nostalgia and enjoyment through out all the images as the teenage girls are doing activities that some would consider more masculine, for example camping in the woods and getting muddy.

Image Analysis:

This is a digital image taken by Justine Kurland. The mise-en-scene presents Alyssum sitting in a blossom tree between Hudson river and a highway. This image has been taken on a straight on angle, and has a large depth of field using a f-stop of around f/11 or f/16. I know this because all/most of the image is in focus. Kurland has used the rule of thirds, and it can be argued that she has used leading lines to show the audience where the focal point is.

Artist studies

Hans Van Der Meer:

Hans Van Der Meer is a Dutch photographer who has created many projects. I am going to focus on his two projects about football ‘Dutch Fields’ and ‘European Fields’ for my personal study. Through out his projects ‘Dutch Fields’ and ‘European Fields’ Van Der Meer explored the relationship between the football and photography. These projects consist of images of various football pitches, which each tell a different story about the game. In an interview about his project ‘Dutch Fields’ Van Der Meer stated that “football and photography can be such a beautiful combination” as you never know hat happened before or after the moment captured which is why the subject of football was so appealing to him. He started of by taking images of by taking photos of the top armature matches before deciding to peruse taking images of lower league games. Van Der Meer tried to find pitches where the background also formed a part of the story and experimented with taking images from different angles such as high up angles from the stands. However, he found himself taking most of his images standing on the ground.

What intrigues me and draws me to Van Der Meer’s images is the way they have a cinematic feel to them. I also like how Van Der Meer allows the viewer to interpret the images how they want, creating their own story on what happened before or after the image was taken.

IMAGE ANALYSIS:

This is a digital image from Hans Van Der Meer’s project ‘European Fields.’ The mis-en-scene presents a football pitch with a scenic background of what looks like a village on an overcast day. It looks as if a corner has just been taken as everyone is crowded in the box. This photo has been taken from a high up angle, possibly from the stands as it looks like you are looking down on the players. The use of light is natural however, there isn’t a key direction in which the light source is coming from as the image was taken on an overcast day. The foreground of the image, what’s going on on the pitch, is in focus whereas the background is slightly out of focus. This suggests that the image was taken with an f-stop of f/5.6 as it has quite a shallow depth of field. The use of colours in the image vary from being dull such as the fields in the background, to quite vibrant. For example the yellow and blue kits and certain parts of the grass stand out more than the colours in the background of the image. The focus of the image is the players who are all trying to get hold of the ball. This image is a snapshot of what happened during the corner however, the viewers don’t know what happens after. It could be said that Hans Van Der Meer has used the rule of thirds and leading lines to draw the viewers to the ball.

I am going to use Van Der Meer’s images as a base inspiration for my photos. I am going to take images of different football pitches in Jersey however, I don’t plan on having people in my photos like Van Der Meer does.

Bernd and Hilla Becher:

Bernd and Hilla Becher were a German couple who took images of the disappearing industrial architecture in Europe and North America. Bernd originally studied painting before typography. Their photography is different to other photographers as they document the history of German architecture such as water towers, factories, coal bunkers and other industrial structures. The way they presented their work as a typology, which is a system used to arranging various things in to groups based on how similar they look. Once they had taken a set of images of a structure, they would group their images together and present them in a grid formation; creating many typologies.

What stands out about Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work is that the sky is separated from the structure in the image. I also note that the sky is plain and overcast which gives it the distinct look that the sky is separated from the subject of the image. To get this affect, they would take their images of the same structure when it was an overcast day or they would have to take a series of images over multiple days to make sure the sky and lighting was correct.

Barbara Kruger:

Barbra Kruger is a conceptual artist and collagist who is most famous for her black and white images which are overlaid with red and white captions displaying the power of identity. Kruger’s work is very powerful in my opinion and links to the theme of femininity and sexism which is a major issue in women’s football. Her work depicts how women can be independent and don’t need to follow the rules created by society.

I plan to edit some of my images in the style of Barbra Kruger’s work as I think I could create a powerful set of images and the caption I can create will link strongly with the theme of my personal study as there have been many challenges playing football as a young girl and still are now.

Statement of Intent

For my personal study, I want to explore nostalgia and girlhood, focusing on mine and my sisters childhood memories and the bond we have.

This idea is significant to me because there is a real sense of nostalgia when looking back on the past. The majority of my childhood was spent outside, spending time at the sandunes, woods, St. Ounes beach. and football pitches. We both used to surf together and paly football so, I will plan to take photos surrounding these topics.

To start off my project, I will look back at old images from my childhood, which will help me in the process of taking my new images. This also links to the theme of nostalgia as I will be looking back on and reliving my childhood memories. Once I have looked back at the archived images, I plan to go back to all the places that have a significant meaning to my childhood such as various beaches, the woods, football pitches and the sand dunes. I will carry out a photoshoot at each location which, I will use to document my childhood and the theme of sisterhood.

I want to present my present my project as a photobook as my project is more on the documentary side of photography. By presenting my work as a photobook, it will enable me to tell a story as I will be able to experiment with the layout and put the images in a specific order, creating juxtapositions.

I am going to aim of my project to include a range abstract, landscape and portrait images. Most of my images will be taken outside at various different locations as it is where me and my sister made most of our childhood memories. When carrying out my photoshoots I will consider the composition, framing and lighting to create a strong set of images.

I an going to interpret the theme of nostalgia by looking back on my childhood. I may also explore the idea of breaking down the stereotypical activities girls and boys do when they’re young, looking at the work of Barbra Kruger who edits images displaying short impactful sentences over images. As I start to take my images, I will start to develop on my idea. I have looked at artists such as Justine Kurland, Julia Margaret Cameron, Van Has De Meer and Barbara Kruger for inspiration. I will shoot my sister in each of the significant locations and may take some landscape images and images of the objects in the places I visit. Most of my images will be staged as well as taking some candid images.

To edit my images, I will be using Lightroom Classic as well as experimenting with photoshop if I need to further enhance my images.

As well as nostalgia, I also want my project to link back to the theme of femininity and girlhood. I will be using Justine Kurland’s project ‘girl picture’ as inspiration for my project as well as Julia Margret Cameron. These two artists had a strong influence on the art of photography, exploring the theme of girlhood throughout their work.
