Image analysis

Contextual

This image was taken by photographer Arnold Newman in Essen, Germany, 1963 and was taken of the industrialist, Alfried Krupp. Newman was a Jewish American photographer who was most well known for his environmentalist portrait style, often taking images of artists and politicians.

When Krupp first viewed his portrait he was furious as Newman had presented him in a villain. Newman later came out to say that it was his impression of a Nazi who managed to survive, yet killed millions. This was Newman’s own way of getting some revenge for the Jewish community.

Emotional Response

The image creates an emotional response for the viewer of anxiety and fear due to the shadowing on Krupp’s face. The image definitely depicts Krupp as the villain and gives off an ominous atmosphere.

Technical

This image was taken from a front angel using Krupp as the centre of the image. The two pillars behind him act as a frame and the back of the warehouse acts as sort of horizon line. The lights on the celling function as leading lines guiding the viewers eyes through the background scene.

Visual

In this image we are able to see a man in around his late 50’s wearing a black suit. He is shown with his fingers interlocked and placed under his chin. His surroundings are industrial, with graffiti on the pillars either side of him as well as the construction work behind them. We can also make out two trains, one a light blue, while the other is a burgundy red.

Conceptual

This photo was taken as a portrait photograph for a convicted Nazi named Alfried Krupp. While it was meant to show him in a positive view, the photographer, Arnold Newman, showed him in the opposite.

Evaluation

Final evaluation of project

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this project. I really enjoyed taking pictures of landscapes and the themes we did throughout.

I think that my favourite part of this project was the editing as I liked how there were so many possibility’s and moods you could present through your images.

My least favourite part of the project was the artist comparison as I feel like it was difficult for me to create similar images in Jersey when they mainly used city images.

If we were to do this project again, I would improve by taking photos in different places and perhaps try to take some close up images instead of taking them from far away.

Final image analysis

Urban images:

I really like this image and I think that the multiple layers paired with the busy town go really nicely together. If I could change anything about this image I would want to change the colouring. While I like the colour on the image, I don’t think it matches the style I was going for, and having certain bright areas would look a lot better in this image.

I think this image turned out very well. I like how there’s always something to look at in the image and that the focus point is in the centre. I am also fond of the colours used for this picture. If I were to change anything, I would probably add two more layers going inward towards the photo.

I think that this image is good as the focus point is in the centre and there’s always something to look at in it. If I were to change something it would probably be the vibrancy of the sky as I feel that it takes away the attention from the harbour which is the urban part of this image.

I am fond of this image, the blue shy contrasting with the busy town below creates a nice contrast. I I could change anything, I would crop the image a little bit so that there would be enough sky to have the contrast, but not too much you focus on it instead of the image.

I really like the whole aesthetic this image gives off and i think that the grain on it helps to create a more old timely look. If I were to change anything I would of probably expanded the image to get more in frame.

I think this image has an overall refreshing feel to it. I think the cool colours contrast nicely with the dark town. If I were to change anything I would probably decrease the highlights so that the sky isn’t as bright.

I really like how the tower is the main focus. I also like how highly contrasted the image is. I don’t think I would really want to change anything about this image. If I had to, I would probably add some more highlights.

Anthropocene images:

I like the industrial style this image presents as I think it shows a more modern side to Anthropocene. I also think the cool colouring of the image produce a melancholy mood, making the viewer reflect. If I were to change anything I would most likely edit out the bird in the corner of the photo as I feel it can be distracting from the main focus of the image.

I’m very happy with how this image turned out and really like how prominent the smoke is. I would improve this image by getting rid of the powerline as I feel it obstructs the tower.

This image turned out nicely however, I would of liked to include some more colour to it. Perhaps by making the lamp post have some light on it or finding a way to incorporate the sky light more.

This image shows very well how modernized the world is a will continue to be. The two cranes towering over the buildings below also make for great focus points. To improve this image I would lower the exposure, I like how low saturated the image is but i still feel like it’s too bright.

I think this image shows really well how nature can fight back. I really like the low exposure and black and white tones in this image. To improve, I would make the white in the windows and pipes on the side more noticeable.

This Image turned out okay. I like the view however I don’t think the vintage colourizing really works it it. To improve I would change the tones and perhaps have it in black and white.

Anthropocene photoshoot

Action plan

For this photoshoot, I plan to take pictures of industrial styled buildings or areas. I then hope to edit these images in different ways the will highlight potential damage to the environment.

Best photos

I chose this as a best image because I liked how the house is all over grown and wrecked, showing the viewer nature fighting back against man made structures. I also think that having the image in black and white creates a cool atmosphere.

This is one of my favourite Anthropocene images as it displays the smoke being produced from the tower. I also like how the tower is silhouetted against the sky in the background.

I picked this image as I think the construction work relates to industrial areas. This fits the Anthropocene theme since it takes over land in order to build something potentially damaging for the environment.

I picked this photo as I like the industrial style this image gives off. I think that the crane adds a focus point to the image as well. The cool colours also add a refreshing yet sad mood to the picture.

Anthropocene artist research

Edward Burtynsky

Edward Burtynsky was born February 22, 1955. He is a Canadian photographer and artist known for his large format photographs of industrial landscapes. His works depict locations from around the world that represent the increasing development of industrialization and its impacts on nature and the human existence. It is most often connected to the philosophical concept of the sublime, though they are equally disturbing in the way they reveal the context of rapid industrialization. He is an advocate for environmental conservationism and his work is deeply entwined in his advocacy, which often comments on the scars left by industrial capitalism while establishing an aesthetic for environmental devastation.

He often positions himself at high-vantage points over the landscape using elevated platforms. Burtynsky describes the act of taking a photograph in terms of “The Contemplated Moment”. He currently uses a high-resolution digital medium format camera and his photographic style is often characterized by the sublime nature of the scale of his photographs. His large-format view camera depicts humanity’s scarring on the landscapes he makes his subject, with “astonishing color and relentless detail”, always focusing on the consequences of global consumerism.

Burtynsky’s photography places the viewer in a state of non-intervention with the environments depicted. While the viewer witnesses the consequences of radicalized consumerism, the viewer is left to quietly contemplate its political articulation: neither a condemnation nor a celebration of the subject matter, simply an acknowledgement of its existence.

Why have you chosen this artist?

I chose this artist as looking at his work, you immediately see the damage done to the world. While i know this was his aim, it makes you reflect on any past behaviors that would of aided in creating these images.

What interest you about their work?

I am interested by the the mix of beauty and pity captured in his work. On one hand, the scenery on majority of his photos are stunning but the pity we feel towards the land contrasts greatly.

How does the work relate to the theme of Anthropocene?

His work relates to Anthropocene as he captures the industrial takeover of nature.

What are you going to do as a response to their work?

In response, I would like to take some similar photos by finding areas that combine man made structures and nature.

George Marazakis

George Marazakis is Greek photographer who takes Anthropocene photographs, as a concept and title for a series that looks at a new time periods engendered by the greed of mankind. This includes the planet, plastic pollution, and power stations. Anthropocene is an era in which human activity is the dominant influence on both climate and environment.

Why have you chosen this artist?

I chose this artist as I feel he has an interesting take on the world around us. His images show us how we effect our earth, whether that’s through paving paths or constructing buildings.

What interest you about their work?

His work interests me as he shows us the negative side to how we live, however, he also shows us the beauty. This makes sure we get a clear perspective from seeing both the good and the bad.

How does the work relate to the theme of Anthropocene?

His work relates to Anthropocene since he shows the effects that humans have on the world.

What are you going to do as a response to their work?

If I were to respond to his work, I would most likely try to photograph roads and pathways around nature, as I feel that this would relate to some of his work.

Artist comparison

I have chosen to do some work in the style of George Marazaki’s. I chose him since I think he shows different areas of Anthropocene that may not normally be shown.

Image 1:

– George Marazaki, Anthopocene.
– My image

In my image, I tried to replicate the cool tones of Marazaki’s image by lowering the temperature and increasing the exposure.

I felt that the amount of nature in my image related to nature surrounding the industrial area in Marazaki’s image as the modern house is being surrounded by the wilderness.

Best images

I picked this as a best image as I really liked the urban feel this image gives off. The structure in the middle acts as a focus point for the eyes, and the clutter of buildings beneath it shows off how urban Jersey can be. I also really like the amount of contrast used here as I think it creates an old timely feel to it.

I chose this image as I felt that the large sky over the town create a contrasting view of cluttered and vacant spaces. I like the colouring of this image too as it reminds me of a storm hovering over a town. I also like how the church is the focus point of the image.

I selected this photograph as I liked the grainy effect I added to make the image seem older. I think that this gives off a different feel to what you would usually see in urban images and while the buildings still seem modern, I think the texture and colouring still work nicely with it.

Finally, I selected this image as I liked the contrasting sky with both the ocean and cluttered buildings/ boats. I also like the highlights as I think it extenuates the ocean in the background. The cool tones in this image also give off a refreshing feel for the viewer.

Urban artist research

Steven Irwin

Freelance film maker and photographer, Irwin is based in Cardiff, South Wales. He began his career as a documentary film maker and photographer before moving towards more layered, abstracted images.

Steven’s work practice combines both digital and analogue methods, from scratching and staining negatives to digital manipulation. with his work has being purchased by private collectors around the world.

Why have you chosen this artist?

I picked this Irwin as one of my urban artists since i think he has a very unique and interesting style.

What interest you about their work?

I was intrigued by the colourful, modern, street art we can see when walking around big cities.

How does the work relate to the theme of Urban?

This relates to urban photography since the buildings are city like in a cluster of them.

What are you going to do as a response to their work?

In response, I would perhaps like to try either editing the image manually using water colours or editing my image on photoshop by adding in colours digitally.

Riccardo Magherini

Riccardo Magherini is known for his frenetic and layered images of street scenes and urban landscapes. Represented by galleries across London, Paris and New York, Riccardo has achieved recognition internationally from awards such as the International Photography Awards and London International Creative Competition.

Riccardo’s photography explores the phenomenon of time, more specifically, the movement that time creates. By overlapping multiple impressions, Riccardo’s photographs have a painterly quality, and with the endless illusion of depth, he creates works that resemble abstract paintings.

Why have you chosen this artist?

I chose Magherini as my main urban artist due to his stunning blurred street photography.

What interest you about their work?

I was interested in the colourful lights and busy surroundings seen in his images.

How does the work relate to the theme of urban?

His photos are often taken in cities or very populated areas, giving his pictures the theme of urban.

What are you going to do as a response to their work?

In response, I would like to have a go at his blurred effect that he creates in his images by placing the same image over the top and lowering the opacity.

Pedro Correa

Pedro Correa is a fine art photographer. Having studied oil painting and comic art at the Brussel’s Royal Academy of Arts, he became fascinated by photography and its capacity to capture the moment. He decided to pursue the path of chasing these meaningful, fragile moments, seizing them through the art of photography while taking his impressionistic background with him. With a recent solo show in London, and a portfolio just launched on Rise Art, we decided to sit down with him and find out more about his work, and this elusive thing he terms the decisive moment.

Why have you chosen this artist?

I chose Correa as one of my urban artists since i found his minimal style to be captivating and attention drawing.

What interest you about their work?

I really like how he often sees beauty in things that would otherwise go unnoticed, such as rain or condensation. I also like how he uses the focus to direct the viewers eyes to see specific areas of his photos.

How does the work relate to the theme of urban?

His photos are often taken in cities or busy areas, even thought sometimes they aren’t the main focus of the image.

What are you going to do as a response to their work?

If i were to do a response to his work, I would try to use the wet weather to my advantage like he does in his photos. I would do this by focusing on the rain when there are lots of lights in the background.

Artist Comparison

The artist I have chosen to do a comparison of is Riccardo Magherini. I think his style really stood out to me among all the rest as I find his manipulation of the images to present more of a time rush and urban feel to them.

Image 1:

– Riccardo Magherini, urban.
My image

How I did it:

Firstly, I added my image to photoshop from the edited version from Lightroom.
Next, I copied the layer on top of the image and changed the opacity, moving it slightly to give a blurred effect.
Lastly, I used the dodge tool to make some of the light areas brighter so imitate the lighting effect Riccardo has on his images. I also changed the exposure to brighten the image a little more.
Final result.

Image 2:

– Riccardo Magherini, urban.
My mix

How I did it:

Firstly, I added my edited photo into photoshop. I chose this image since I liked the vintage colouring of the picture and how the dull colours are similar to that in Riccardo’s image.
Next, I created a duplicate layer and inverted it.
lastly, I cropped my image as there was too much excess sky.
the final outcome.

image 3:

– Riccardo Magherini, urban.
My image

How I did it:

Firstly, I added my picture into photoshop.
Then, I created layers, inverting two to give the image even more of a focus point in the centre.
This was the finial outcome, I chose this picture as I felt that the yellow in the sky matches the yellow on the door of Riccardo’s image.

Urban

What is Urban?

Urban means belonging to, or relating to, a town or city. Most of the population is an urban population. In photography, it usually relates to images of multiple buildings clustered together.

Urbanization began in ancient Mesopotamia in the Uruk Period (4300-3100 BCE). It is thought that a particularly prosperous and efficient village attracted the attention of other, less prosperous, tribes who then attached themselves to the successful settlement, thus creating an urban environment.

Urban mood board

Majority of urban photo shoots take place in big cities such as London.

Anthropocene

What is Anthropocene?

The Anthropocene Project is a multidisciplinary body of work combining fine art photography, film, virtual reality, augmented reality, and scientific research to investigate human influence on the state, dynamic, and future of the Earth.

The group was created in 2016, however, the effects of Anthropocene on the world had been going on long before that, some suspecting as early as 1610 with an unusual drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide.

All of these works are aimed to show the world how we affect our planet.
