RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

I believe the photographic book is the best medium for photography. The ability to create impact by pairing, juxtaposing and sorting pictures into a flow in order to tell a story or instill an emotion in the viewer is unsurpassed by any other photographic medium. Having something tactile in your hands that you can keep and look at on your own terms is also very important. A zine is an accessible way for someone to create this object and they can take on many different forms – from a very DIY aesthetic to high end magazine print quality.‘ – James Moreton

How do I want my design to look and feel?

I want my photo zine to look well put together and interesting, I want the reader to feel like its been made with detail and with purpose. Rather than a random mix of photos put together with no meaning or concept.

Format, size and orientation

My zine will be a normal size, however the photos will be different sizes depending on what suits it most.

Narrative and Visual concept

The narrative is that my zine shows different people/ tourists in St Malo, and the pictures capture what they are doing and how they are using their time. It ranges from pictures of families, single parents with their children, couples, the elderly and just people on their own as well. I think its interesting to see and observe these type of things especially as St Malo is known for its tourists, and considering I went there as a tourist to photograph the town I thought this particular concept/ narrative suited most. Also after looking and organising through all my images it came clear that this was the best option instead of randomly putting together some pictures with absolutely no story or coordination at all.

NARRATIVE AND STORY

What is a narrative?

Narrative photography is the idea that photographs can be used to tell a story. Allen Feldman stated that “the event is not what happens. The event is that which can be narrated”.

Linking this to the St Malo trip I am creating a photo zine which I hope gives a narrative of the trip.

THREE WORDS

My zine will be called: St Malo Tourists

This is because all my images will show a story and selection of different tourists all different ages and what activities they have been captured doing whilst we were on the day trip. This can also link to nostalgia as i have captured certain moments in my pictures which would be nostalgic for the people in the pictures… as I’m photographing a ‘memory’.

HOW WILL I TELL MY STORY?

To easily lead my story i will have sentences/ titles on most pages to show the clear separation in which tourists are doing what. For example all the images of old tourists/ people will be on one page, this goes the same for children, teenagers etc..

Narrative is constructed when you begin to create relationships between images (and/or text) and present more than two images together. Your selection of images (editing) and the order of how these images appear on the pages (sequencing) contributes significantly to the construction of the narrative. So too, does the structure and design of the photo-zine. However, it is essential that you identity what your story is first before considering how you wish to tell it.

Planning: St Malo photo zine

To prepare my layout for my zine I printed out 12 images from my St Malo photoshoot and edited them to my liking. Before putting them into InDesign straight away I printed my images out on paper and then did a ‘mock up’ of how id like to present my zine and where everything will go. I used trial and error to try create the best possible outcome. It was also useful as I could think about what i want to write about and which images would go with whatever subject of text for the specific page.

Photoshoot – ST MALO

In total i took around 200 photos, however, after going through each one id say I only have around 7-10 best images as most are blurry or the same subject which I photographed several times. This was due to trying to get around different areas in St Malo which was making my images blurry as I was mainly walking most the time and quickly taking pictures. I also found it difficult and awkward to stop and take a obvious picture of someone in case they didn’t like it. However most of my best images were taken by me just holding the camera at my hip and not looking into the lens. This technique gave me more candid outcomes which I think look the most interesting.

SAINT-MALO PLAN AND MOODBOARD

Henri Cartier Bresson inspired mood board:

Vivian Maier inspired mood board:

Examples of street photography in st malo:

Examples of street photography in general:

I don’t have a specific plan, however i want to vary my images and experiment different ways to capture street photography. i do aim to have a large amount of images by the end of the day which i can then go onto editing them and selecting my favourites. I want to be able to compare some of my images to Henri Cartier Bresson and Vivian Maier and analyse the similarities.

EVALUATION

WHY CHOOSE THE SUBJECT FEMININITY FOR THE IDENTITY PROJECT:

I chose to take my final pictures inspired by Justine Kurland’s ‘Girl Pictures’ and femininity. My aim was to show the stereotypical view of women… represented as soft, gentle and delicate. However, i also liked Justine’s idea which was to present her ‘Girl pictures’ as if girls were trying to run away or escape, being in a group, in rural areas and are shown helping each other throughout the pictures. You could view it in several different ways, the idea that women don’t need men to be independent and survive, the surroundings are very gentle for example lying in a filed with daisies, however, the girls are just apart of the scene they arent trying to be seen as gentle delicate ect. Some quotes from my other artist reference Clare Ray represents this idea: “the way children negotiate their surroundings and respond with an unharnessed spatial awareness, which I find really interesting when applied to the adult body.”, “… each living body is space and has space: it produces itself in space and it also produces that space.” The idea that the you aren’t just living in the space you create the space around you and how it can be perceived. Regarding the project, even though now stereotypes are changing and are less problematic, their is still the dominant ideology of how women should behave and what values they should hold.

HOW DID I PLAN THIS PROJECT:

Going by my photoshoot plan I went to a location that suits the theme of Justine Kurland’s pictures (rural, fields). Going with my friends and attempting to recreate what the girls in Justine’s images were wearing, we chose to do this photoshoot late afternoon to try and get the right lighting however it was still very bright.

PHOTOSHOOT AND EDITING:

Initially, I aimed to create more than one photoshoot, due to time and weather I only completed one photoshoot. Along the north coast is where I took my pictures, my favourites being the ones in a filed with daisies which are a connotation of feminine, gentle and delicate. Within that photoshoot I took around 100+ images so i had a large selection to choose/ edit with. At first, i wanted to leave my images how they were, I was happy with the lighting but still wanted to push myself and see what else would make them look more similar to Justine’s images. As Kurland’s photos almost look vintage, for a couple of my final images I used a vintage pre-set to enhance the more warm tones.

WHAT WENT WRONG IN THIS PROJECT:

I could’ve pushed myself more in this specific project and included different point of views to represent femininity and masculinity, however, as usual I don’t have enough time or transport to achieve what I intend on doing. Its also difficult to find people who are willing to spend a good amount of time participating and being in the photographs. Overall, I feel like I did have a thorough plan which I followed through with and was happy with what I managed to create.

Overall evaluation of whole landscape project:

Concluding the overall portraiture project the femininity and masculinity topic was my favourite as I was inspired and intrigued by Justine Kurland. I have been on top of my blog posts and have spent good amount of time on each of them to make them good quality, whilst also going back into them to improve my work. I’ve learnt a lot about different views of femininity and how it can be represented, and have enjoyed informing myself by reading through websites and theories. I was able to create several analogue pieces, and successfully mounted/presented my images thoroughly and could plan how I would present my work on the blog. Environmental portraiture I struggled in due to time, I did manage to get some pictures however I disliked them so didn’t want to develop them further. In my next project I will try expand my variety of photoshoots and manage my time better.

Image comparison to Justine Kurland

My photoshoot was inspired by Justin Kurland I tried to recreate her images but add a personal twist to the shoot.

Comparing my images to Justine Kurland they are very similar, regarding the colours, layout and style. My pictures are more vibrant compared to Kurland’s which look like they are vintage and more warmer colours.
