A photo zine is a self-made, printed issue built of photos and captions. The term comes from the word “magazine”, as zines follow the style of magazines with headings, text, and illustrations put on a grid. An important feature of a photo zine is visual storytelling.
Mood board:
I have created a mood board for inspiration on how I would like to lay my zine out. I am wanting a very minimalistic look to my zine and I have decided that I will keep all of my images in black and white apart from the two cover images to add some contrast.
I have compiled some images from online of photography zines. The images in these mood boards consist of layouts and designs which I like. I want to maybe use them as inspiration and replicate them with my own photos in my zine. The mood board below is for inspiration on the content inside the zine.
Below is a photo of my annotations for my mood board. I have annotated aspects of the zines that I like, therefore why I have chosen them for my mood board. Most are for potential layouts for the zine format.
I have also created a separate mood board for the zine front page as I think it’s important to have an interesting, incising cover (below).

We visited:
Established in 1873 the Société is a registered Jersey Charity. They achieve their aims through our active Sections, research collections, community outreach and collaboration with local and international heritage partners.
We looked at the old images from and before the war and from Elizabeth castle.
This gave us an insight into the history of jersey and gave us ideas on what kind of things we could consider for the theme of NOSTALGIA.

WHAT IS A STORY?

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NARRATIVE AND A STORY:
If using the definition of ‘story’ from the dictionary as “an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment,” then the narrative is the choice of which events to relate and in what order. The narrative is how we decide to tell a story as we apply different narratives to the same story all the time which changes the perspective, which ultimately could lead to a change the view of the story.
JERSEY CHANNEL ISLANDS:
Jersey is located in the Channel Islands, between England and France, is known as the biggest of the islands. It is becoming a self-governing dependency of the United Kingdom, with a mix of British and French cultures, the main attractions for visiting Jersey are the beaches, cliffside walking trails, inland valleys and historic castles.

Daytrip in St. Malo

A group of photography students exploring the highlights of the St. Malo old town.
A paragraph
Sailing through the channel islands to St. Malo Hautlieu photography students had arrived to take pictures of the old town for their photography projects. Being greeted by the tourist attractions, including the amazing food and weather they explored the streets and beach. Due to the wonderful weather many people civilians that live in St. Malo were found wondering the streets and tanning on the beach creating incredible portraiture work while also taking landscapes of the architecture of the town.

My zine is based on the photographs i made in St.Malo, which i have edited to fit the aesthetic i am going for more, the majority of my photographs are in black and white with a small selection of them in colour.
I have taken inspiration for my zine by looking at online ones and by looking through older Hautlieu students past zines, the students ones were the most helpful for the layout as they had the same amount of images as the one i am making.
The process of making the zine is relatively simple as i know how to work indesign and therefor makes the process enjoyable.
The photos above are some of the photos which i have selected to go in my zine.
The narrative behind my story is interpretive as i am letting the audience create there own story as each individual sees things in a different way obviously for me the photos are set out in a way in which i want them to be shown and how i believe it tells the story of the people in St. Malo, i believe giving the audience the creative freedom to create there own story with my photographs creates better opinions and evaluations on my work as they are able to see it how they want to and there opinions aren’t confined.
The layout of my zine and size is: width: 148mm height: 210 pages: 16 orientation: portrait columns:2 column gutter: 5mm margins: top, bottom, inside, outside: 10mm bleed: top, bottom, inside, outside: 3mm
The zine is made on indesign which is an app created by Adobe. It is 16 pages with some double spread images.
I am going to create a zine made up of my images from St Malo and AI pictures from the same source. A zine is like a magazine, only smaller and more focused. It is defined as a ‘self-published unique work of minority interest‘.
Narrative is the telling of a story. It is adaptable and perspective dependent, and therefore is a subjective process. Narrative is constructed when relationships between images (and/or text) are established, and the layout of these is key to the receiver’s understanding of the narrative.
What is my story?
In order to create my own zine I will need to come up with a story I wish to tell with my images. I think my images speak to a certain type of nostalgia. This was my objective and I think that in their cinematic nature (framing, editing, lighting) they have embodied this. Therefore I feel that I would most like to tell a story that is more subjective and reliant on the receiver’s interpretations, as this is the best way to ignite nostalgia as an abstract emotion. It relies on the receiver’s memories and the individual emotions attached to them. Below are some images I feel are the most nostalgic.
Narrative – How will I tell my story?
I plan to use the layout of the zine to display the images in as thoughtful an order as possible. I would like to arrange them in a series of groups; beach, street views, deadpan frames, colour – but this may be difficult as the orientation of these images differs.
I may also use text to aid description of sensual elements, as the senses are often key to nostalgic recollection.
