Virtual Gallery

https://www.artsteps.com/view/646cc71fa788d707405de1fe?currentUser this is a link to my virtual gallery that I have created out of the most successful outcomes from the portraiture module.

I have decided to arrange the photographs in a way so that they make sense when grouped together. I didn’t want them to be messy and all over the place. I wanted also to match themes together. this is why I have put environmental portraits together, femininity response photographs together, and etc. more vibrant colours like the shower portraits and studio shutter sped experiments, I have put together on the same wall.

what I realised that an effect achieved by the camera, shutter speed experiments, fitted very well next to feminine forest response shoot, this is because for both photographs, the tones were gentle and had a slight pink tone visible in both photoshoot, photographs.

as the gallery already looked very colourful, I wanted to create a division between that, therefore I have put on both sides, images in black and white. as they were in the middle of the room they separated the images behind them slightly and contrasted with them.

Mounting finals plan

Set 1

I want to make these pictures look like shots from a old movie, so I will put these in this order on a white foam board. Each of these photos is a A5, as this size is more manageable and easier to put together. I think I will put them on a black background, creating contrast. I will elevate the middle photo on a piece of foamboard too, making it stand out and causing the mount to have more depth.

Set 2

This picture will be framed by itself, as it is A4 and I think it will be more effective by itself.

Set 3

I will frame these two pictures together, and since the top one is A4 and the bottom one is A5, I think they will line up together perfectly. Also they are both based on the same environment, so I think they should be presented together.

Set 4

I will frame these two together since I think the contrast between bold colour and black and white is very effective. They are both A4 so they will match up well, but I will mount the bigger one below. The themes (outside/inside, comfortable/dressed up) also another aspect of contrast between these two environmental portraits.

Set 5

This photo will also be mounted by itself since it is very abstract and I think it would be confusing if it was framed with others. It is A4 so it is big enough to present alone.

Set 6

These pictures will be printed as A5, and I will mount them together in a line. The middle is the one with the most defined figure, and I think it will look effectives with two more abstract images on the sides.

comparison

I photographed the wall with the black graffiti in the middle because on Frank Hallam Days picture he has black graffiti placed on the left side of the photo and other small writing/ graffiti around it. There is a similarity between the two photos because of the colour scheme for e.g. yellow in the background and between the gaps, black in the graffiti and shadows and then blue and white for details, these colours are really good as they compliment each other well. There is a similarity in the lighting as both look like they have been taken during late afternoon/early evening as both photos are dark but you can still see some light coming from either the street lights or sky. Another similarity is that both photos are taken from eye level instead of bird view or low angle view, however the difference is that Frank Hallam Days photo is of a phone box and mine is a photo of graffiti on the wall. Frank Hallam Days photo is more colourful and vibrant whereas mine is more dull and darker however I can change this is lightroom by bringing the saturation up.

I photographed the wall with black graffiti and edited it on photoshop to make it look like its blurred because Stephanie Jungs photo has been edited to also look like its blurred However Stephanie Jungs photo is taken of people on the streets and mine is of graffiti, Stephanie Jung photo is more dramatic as u cant really see the what she has taken a picture of and mine is more subtle and you can see what I have taken a photo of. The colours used in Stephanie’s picture are yellow, red, green, white, black, blue with hints purple, cream, silver however I only have cream and black.

Presentation of Final Outcomes

Environmental Portraits

I will be framing these images up together as they’re both environmental portraits and the colouring of the images are similar, that slight dullness of the colour.

Lighting Experiments

This is my favourite image from the studio lighting and experimenting with lighting. I like how both colours are reflecting on the opposite eyes. I will be framing this image up alone, I feel as though it may drown out any other image.

I like these two images as you can see the frame of the mirror and it looks as though he is coming out of the frame of the mirror.

Identity

These images come from the androgyny side of my identity project, I will be framing these together as they are from the same shoot and have a similar appearance in all of them.

These images also come from the androgyny side of the identity project, this shoot was inspired by Claude Cahun’s “Untitled”, using a mirror and photographing my reflection. In all three of these images my arms are in an elaborate position and I’m not looking at the camera, this is why I am framing them up together.

Virtual gallery

Art Steps

This is my Virtual gallery for my Femininity photoshoot. I did this by uploading my images onto the website art steps and then positioning them around the gallery.

This is my virtual gallery for my masculinity shoot for this I used darker frames to fit with the images better.

final print plan

For my first final print I am going to print out three pictures from my studio portraits shoot, using different lighting techniques, on A5 on glossy photo paper. I am then going to use a piece of black card to make a window mount with the three images. I will take my card and measure out three cut outs, in the centre evenly, which it will cut so that I can stick my image on the back with tape so that the card will frame my images. I am going it use a tilted knife so that there will be a tiny white boarder on each of my images.

For my next final print I am also using one of my studio portrait images which uses chiaroscuro lighting. This time I am going to print it out on A4 glossy photo paper as I think it will look better bigger. With this final piece I am going to stick it onto white foam board and trim it leaving a white boarder. I am going to do this so that my image will be lifted off of the card which I am going to back my lifted image onto. The black card will my the image look finished and make it stand out more.

For my third final print I am going to used two of my environmental portraits. I am going to also print these two on A4 glossy photo paper so they the viewers can clearly see the detail and different tones. I am going to stick these two on foam board as well to lift them. However, when I trim them I am not going to leave any white boarder I am going to cut it right up to the edge of the image. Like my previous final piece, I am going to board them onto a piece of black card so that they are presented together.

For my last final print I am going to use one of the environmental portraits that I used in my third one, however, I have edited this one so that the image is in black and white apart from any red that was in the image, for example on his jacket and his bike. I am going to print this image on A3 glossy photo paper as I think that the image will look best is it is bigger and it will make it stand out more. To present this image I am going to use a window mount like my first final piece. I will take a piece of black card and cut the centre out to make it a frame. I will tape the image onto the back of it facing forwards so that the card has framed my image.

Photographer Image Comparison

I did a photoshoot inspired by Claude Cahun’s “Untitled”, I used a mirror and, unlike Cahun, faced towards my own reflection. This, in my opinion, is my best outcome from this shoot but I have a few others that are really good.

I like this image, I feel as though because of the fact my eyes are closed, it evades my identity.
This is a different type of image inspired by Cahun’s image where the camera is pointing into the mirror instead of me and my reflection at the same time.

printed photos

why I choose this photo to print the photo itself turned out well however the editing could have been better however the photo turned out alright but its not my best work. when taking this photo and editing it I tried to use of inspiration from Danny Lyons

why I choose to print this photo with this photo shoot this photo was one of the best however its a bit grainy. But I still like the photo and how it turned out.

why I choose this photo, the photo turned out really good and the camera made a mistake with the exposer however it made a really good photo.

why I choose this photo the photo itself is good and I like the photo and that’s why I printed it.

why I choose this photo it turned out good however my editing was not my best however its still a good photo. with this photo I was trying to get the feel of a Danny Lyons photos however considering the bike in the photo is a 21st century bike and not a 20th century bike it doesn’t have the same effect.

ideas

My first mounting idea was to mount all the images on foam board to add some level and raise them from board. I would then position the images in an appealing way, either creating a sort of mood board combining the three projects or separating them.

combination
Separate

My other mounting idea was to create a slim boarder around each image, so the images don’t just blend into one big image
