To create this image i used two lights, one focused on the background to eliminate the shadows in back and another flashlight placed in front of the model placed high up to try create a slight light triangle on the right side of his face.
With this image i created it by using a black background and a continuous light placed on the side of the models face, placed at an angle to black out half the face creating a mysterious look to the photograph.

Butterfly lighting

The examples below show a lighting technique called butterfly lighting it is when there is a shadow formed at the bottom of the nose on the cupids bow which forms a shape of a butterfly.
