photo montage

what is it?

A photomontage is known to be a combination of several photographs joined together for artistic effect or to show more of the subject than can be shown in a single photograph.

  1. Historically, the technique has been used to make political statements and gained popularity in the early 20th century (World War 1-World War 2)
  2. Artists such as Raoul Haussman , Hannah Hoch, John Heartfield employed cut-n-paste techniques as a form of propaganda…as did Soviet artists like Aleksander Rodchenko and El Lissitsky
  3. Photomontage has its roots in Dadaism…which is closely related to Surrrealism

Who started photomontage?

Heartfield was known as “one of the most important European artists who had created himself, the field of photomontage”. The social and political impact of Heartfield’s images has also inspired subsequent artists.
