joiners

A joiner is a large image made up of smaller images.

I took photos for my joiners at La Rocque because there are rocks that represent Jersey’s geopark

The first step of making a joiner is to take the photos. I chose what to photograph and took nine zoomed in images that roughly show the main image when put together.

The next step is to choose the right images from the joiners to export in Lightroom. I made folders for each joiner and exported the 9 images for each one.

Then in photoshop I used the automate tool to create my joiners.

Then I used the fill tool to create a coloured background

Final product:

Geopark indroduction

What is a geopark

a UNESCO-designated area containing one or more sites of particular geological importance, intended to conserve the geological heritage and promote public awareness of it, typically through tourism. UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

Jersey geopark

Geosites are places around the Island with special significance. A Geopark is about more than rocks. Jersey is a strong contender for this special designation because of our Island’s exceptional geology and our important cultural heritage which forms the outstanding surroundings we enjoy every day. Whether exploring Jersey’s diverse landscapes or seascapes there is lots to discover and inspire you.

anthropocene – evaluation and critique

Evaluation

I think this project went pretty well. The work I did was satisfactory and I think that I chose good locations to take photographs. The quarry was good because it showed the industrial side of Jersey that not many see. The same goes for the greenhouses, but it shows the abandonment of agriculture that not many see. The photos I took worked with the theme of the project and they came out well.

First I made an introduction to Anthropocene and my project. I defined what Anthropocene in photography is and showed some examples of it. I think an introduction is important for any project as it gives the reader an insight on what you are going to do. It is also helpful for someone who does not know what Anthropocene is. Instead of going straight in it will explain to them what the topic of the project is first.

I then started thinking about where to go to take photos. I made a mind map which is helpful for comparing ideas.

Then I did a blog post about my artist references who inspired me. I wrote a couple sentences about where each artist came from and put in some photos of their work. I focused more on Edward Burtynsky and his work. I did an image analysis on his work. I focused more on him because he inspired me most

Then I made an action plan for my photoshoots, explaining where I would go and included screenshots from google maps for the locations.

After taking the photos and coming back to school I sorted through them in Lightroom, picking the best ones to use in my project.

Then I planned my ideas. These were to edit the old tv, show a contrast of agriculture and urbanisation in jersey, photomontage and comparisons between Edward Burtynsky.

While editing my photos I took screenshots and started to show how I was experimenting with my work. I put these screenshots into my blog to show the process.

I then presented my work by posting another blog post and organising my photos into groups, with other photos that go together.

Finally, I compared my pictures of tires and quarry to Edward Burtynsky’s. It is important to show who inspired you to take your photos, and also interesting to compare their work to yours.

Critique

I could have done another photoshoot somewhere else to represent urbanisation better. Somewhere like St Helier or Five Oaks would have been a good idea for a third photoshoot. Instead I used La Collette and Harve Des Pas photos from the walk to show urbanisation in St Helier.

Anthropocene – Compare and contrast with artist reference

My artist: Edward Burtynsky

His work:

Ed’s work focuses on the impact of humans on our landscapes.

The first 4 pictures show how tires can mask these landscapes, instead of it being a beautiful area where animals can live and trees can grow.

The last 2 photos show a valley which has been used as a quarry. This shows the impact of humans on our landscapes, as they destroy valleys to mine something that they can sell.

My work:

My work with tires is different, as the tires are being reused for a good cause. Farmers use tires to weigh down the plastic covers on feed storage areas for the animals. These photos show agriculture in Jersey but are also similar to Ed Burtynsky’s work.

My work with quarries is similar to Ed’s. This Quarry is located in St John on the Jersey coastline. These photos show the impact of quarries on Jersey’s beautiful coastline, while Ed Burtynsky’s show the impact of quarries in valleys. They both show that our landscapes are being built over for mining purposes. In 50 years time there might be more than one quarry on the coast of Jersey.

anthropocene – presentation of final outcomes

Anthropocene

Urbanisation in Jersey

I think these photos represent Anthropocene in Jersey. The building sites and cranes show urbanisation and the quarry shows the impact of man on the Jersey coastline.

The fall of agriculture in Jersey

I chose to use these photos because they show what most of the general public don’t see. People don’t see the other side of urbanisation, which is a lot of businesses closing and greenhouse land going unused. Agriculture is slowly becoming a smaller industry every year.

I thought I would photograph this tv because it fits in with the background of overgrown and abandoned greenhouses. The tv represents agriculture in the way that it was such a big thing in the past but now it has been abandoned and replaced by new technology.

I edited tv static on to the tv because it also represents the past. Tv static doesn’t really show up on new tv’s. This also creates a good looking effect. The tv also represents agriculture at the moment in the way that it is turned on but doesn’t have any signal/Agriculture is still alive in Jersey but not getting the help it needs to become a big industry again.

The picture edited onto the screen in this photo is an animation of what Holme Grown is planning to look like in the future. They want to build a modern care home where I took the photos of the greenhouses, and also a medical cannabis farm. This shows the evolution of agriculture, as Holme Grown used to just be tomato farms. However, they are abandoning the idea of growing food for people and instead growing cannabis to help people who are prescribed it.

Anthropocene image editing + experimentation

Image editing

This involved editing and getting the best images that represented urbanisation in Jersey and putting them with other images that go together. I sorted them into 2 groups:

The rise of urbanisation in Jersey

The fall of agriculture in Jersey

Experimentation

My idea is to experiment with this photo of an old tv. The first thing I edited was a static screen onto the tv.

To do this I roughly erased the area of the screen using the eraser tool

I then got an image of tv static online and copied it into photoshop. I placed it where the screen is.

Then I zoomed in and cleaned up the borders of the area I had erased. I also painted over the plants that were going over the screen before using the eyedropper tool. This was so it did not look like the plants had been cut off

Final products:

I did the same thing with another image, this time I used an article from the JEP about the plans for Holme Grown and how they are planning to replace the old greenhouses with a care home and a cannabis farm.

Anthropocene ideas

Idea 1 – Old tv

My first idea is to use photoshop to edit an old tv I found behind Holme Grown. This tv was in front of the greenhouses so I took photos of it with the overgrown greenhouses in the background. My idea is to edit something on to the screen, such as tv static or an old news show. This tv will represent older times, where agriculture was the biggest industry in Jersey. I did not think of this idea at the time I was there so I didn’t take photos with this idea in mind, however I could go back with my camera and take photos from better angles or move the tv if I feel like I need to. I could also include news headlines from Jersey about plans to build new buildings such as the new hospital. This will contrast the old overrun greenhouses with the urbanisation of Jersey.

Idea 2

My second idea is to present the change in Jersey’s industry, going from an agricultural island to an urban island. I will show how we are in between those two at the moment, and how urbanisation will effect us later on in life. To show urbanisation I will present photos of Ronez Quarry, building works around Jersey and graffiti. To show the fall of agriculture in Jersey I will present photos of an abandoned garden centre, abandoned farm warehouses and abandoned landscapes of greenhouses, which would have used to be full of workers.

Idea 3

My third idea is to print some of my photos and create a photomontage by cutting and sticking parts of my photos together to create a representation of Anthropocene. I will use both industrial photos and abandoned agriculture in this photomontage.

Artist reference

I will compare my work with Edward Burtynsky’s photos that he took of tires. I have already started this with my artist references and image analysis of this work.
