Image analysis –
I think that this picture which has been manipulated into different colours by Andy Warhol in 1971, is very unique and usual which I really like. This is because he has taken a picture of an electric chair, which aren’t used in many places now due to the danger and inhumanity of them, and shown it in different colours. I think that these colours can help to represent different feelings people may have of it.
This can be ranged from; the blue (being sadness), red (anger), black (death/pain), pink (showing love from loved ones), yellow (happiness) and brown/red (revenge). I think that this is a very clever way to show this as it is subtle yet impactful due to the messages which it can create towards the audience.
Therefore for my editing in my second photoshoot, I will use this technique inspired by Andy Warhol because I like how he repeats the same/similar photos in bright colours to create this idea of “pop art” as it is unusual due to the objects which he photographs as many photographers would use a variety of them, whereas Warhol likes to focus on just one main subject photo instead because it creates a deeper message.
After selecting my best shots on Adobe Lightroom using “Z”, I’m going to select 3 photos from each photoshoot to mainly focus on as part of my final piece. These pictures will then be edited in various ways in Lightroom, in a similar way, and exported into photoshop to create the virtual gallery effect.
My first photoshoot focussed on the privacy of reading and how it can become a forced solitude that people voluntarily put themselves into and enjoy as it is a hobby of theirs which they may find calming and rewarding, I used various backgrounds of places where I like to read and props to add different layers of personal detail to the photos. Then for my second photoshoot, I wanted to use books which are revolved around a certain theme, for this its feminism and working hard, to show how they can be create a message yet also be enjoyable while raising awareness of things which are commonly looked over in everyday life, hoping that the messages in them are impactful.
For all of these photos I have decided to experiment with 2/3 different ways to manipulate them; I will achieve this by using different filters (such as black and white), changing the contrasts dramatically, experimenting with cropping, etc. Then I will bring them into Photoshop to experiment with sequencing/grouping and create a virtual gallery.
3 best shots from photoshoot 1
Why I chose this photo: I chose this photo because I like how the cover of the book is brightly coloured, in a fun way as it creates a calm atmosphere for me and others while I read the book. It also works well with the background, of the jeans and shoes, as the camera is only focussed on the cover and its finer details and the colours compliment everything nicely. I really enjoyed reading this book as well as it focussed on my favourite genre, which is romance. This was photographed in one of my favourite places to read in school, the street, as it is secluded and normally quite quiet yet there are other people also doing their own thing.
Why I chose this photo: I chose this photo because I like the warmer, rich yellow and orange/brown tones and shadows which have been created naturally in this photo through the lighting on a sunny day as well as the green from the bushes as it adds another element of colour towards the photo that contrasts nicely against the blue of the sky. I really liked how it shows how calm the surroundings of where I were was as it made me feel really comfortable and safe while I was reading.
Why I chose this photo: The reasons that I chose this photo to use in my final piece was because of the bright blue and pink tones of the book, which help to show that this book is a romance and create a safe and loving atmosphere for the viewers while reading or looking at the photo, against the darker tones of the wooden table below. I also like how the headphones add a level of personality towards the photo and it shows how the photographer creates a secluded place for themselves while they read as they choose to listen to music and block the world out so that they can entirely focus on the book instead.

Why I chose this photo: I really liked this photo because I love how there’s the clear message, which you can see in bold, which grabs your attention easily and makes you think what this book may be focussing on, which is feminism and its various topics, then it makes you want to know more. I also like how the yellow of the background works well with the book, even if it is slightly lighter, which can be altered in Lightroom, as it is similar to Henry Hargreaves work.
Why I chose this photo: I chose this photo because I liked how the oranges work well together, as they aren’t exactly the same which is beneficial otherwise I think that they would get lost in each other. I also liked how the boldness of the statement “Feminism is going to ruin your life” is shown as it makes it become the main part of the photo which you will focus on as it creates this message then gives information underneath in various products to support its point, as if it is a debate.
Why I chose this photo: I chose this photo because I like how simple yet effective it is because it shows how to help yourself become motivated and ways to make that happen through the little picture of the umbrella which is seen. It creates a feeling of motivation towards you as well which I like as it makes you want to be as productive as you can be. I also like how the colour of the pages of the book are a muted tone as it works nicely within the photo.
1st: Photos taken of my book from my point of view in various places.
2nd: Similar to Henry Hargreaves work in the studio using books about feminism and working hard.

Here are photos which I took from various angles of different books, with a variety of locations and other props used to add detail and personality to the photos.
Best shots –
These are my best shots which I have selected on Lightroom which I think are successful and represent the viewpoint of looking down at a book you’re reading and how in solitude you can be and how calming it is. I will choose a few of these photos to use so that I can create my final outcome and edit them through Adobe Lightroom with editing to control the lighting/contrast/etc.

For this photoshoot, I used different coloured card to create bright backgrounds which is similar to Henry Hargreaves work and I think that these worked well with the books because the colours compliment each other nicely.
Best shots –
These are the photos which I have selected to be my best shots, this is because I like how the lighting is with the photos and the viewpoint which I have taken them from. I also like how the coloured backgrounds work well, as the colours compliment the book and the various pages which I have chosen to photograph.
Comparing Claude Cahun’s work and Henry Hargreaves there is a clear difference in their photography styles. Claude Cahun’s style is full of darker, grey and black tones to create shadows and then uses lighting to create a distinct highlight upon the photo to be able to show you the message they are trying to create for the people who see it. On the other hand, Henry Hargreaves uses brighter, contrasting colours within his work to make it stand out with a deep meaning, as text can accompany a lot of his photography highlighting what the photo is about. Although he will also have that light hearted, comfortable atmospheric feeling to his photography to relay a message towards people but still keep a serious tone attached to it. The top picture is from the photographer Claude Cahun, in my opinion I think that it highlights the meaning of how all races/genders are able to come together and support each other in any way possible. It can also show how the prejudice ideas and stereotypes of different races/genders are able to be pushed past, which is mostly true this current day and age, and how it doesn’t matter what gender, age, sexuality or race someone may be because it doesn’t change how they should be perceived based on a stereotypical idea. Therefore, Henry Hargreaves work shows a different message where he highlights the importance of plastic pollution and what it is doing to the earth. The yellow colour, in the background, and red colour, of the plastic bags writing, is used to represent the dangers of pollution and how damaging the plastic bags can be to the wildlife. The words ‘Thank you’ which are repeated on it continuously can also be taken in a horrible way where the plastic bag is almost thanking you for letting it free and contributi8ng it towards pollution which makes you consider what your actions are contributing too and how much of a difference it would make to change to reusable bags instead.
I personally really like this photo which was taken by Claud Cahun because it shows peoples hands, which can be used to tell a lot about someone as it can show their heritage, what they may work as, their personality etc. Therefore in this photograph I think that it is clearly shown, because it shows how 3 people have come together and have joined as if they have been united together. I also like how the black/white contrast highlights the hands well, making them stand out against each other which draws your attention towards it to make you wonder why these 3 people have come together.
Henry Hargreaves
Famous for still life/food photography.
Commercial photographer.
His work is often including funny yet edgy messages.
I think that this photo by Henry Hargreaves is quite a successful image because it shows how someone is holding the book, as if they are looking through it and find it interesting. I also think that the pastel colours of the background and book work quite well together because they aren’t too bright and contrast nicely against each other, which I want to do in my own work as I really like the fluidity of how well it works together.
Identity is seen as a group of factors which are used by a person or group to show what defines them. It can include gender, heritage, where you live, your interests, personality, culture, political etc.
There can be many stereotypes which come from the different categories of identity which can influence a prejudice idea of how people are viewed from some people.
Mood board –
List of ideas about identity for a photoshoot
Focussing on someone’s interests.
From their point of view/looking down at it.
Of objects that have some relevance to the person with their hands in it.
Photographed somewhere they enjoy reading.
Include other smaller objects to add detail.
My final idea:
For my idea I’m going to focus on my own identity, from my perspective. I enjoy reading, which is a hobby of mine. Therefore I will go and take pictures from my point of view of me reading a book, going somewhere I enjoy reading, my favourite books/quotes from books, putting myself into a forced isolation when I read, showing headphones etc.
Juxtaposition photography is where 2-3 pictures are taken of objects/people that contrast or link together, which can be used to show peoples identities through their cultures or interests, this is seen within photography through the use of either contrasting/similar lighting, forced perspectives/cropping or the use of props.
Examples –
Experimenting
Here are the photos which I chose to use, I chose a selection so that I could experiment in many different ways and not be limited with what I could use.
2 Photos juxtaposed –
Firstly, I brought the other picture, from Lightroom, which I wanted to use into Photoshop that I could make it the same height and width as the other.
Then I selected the eraser tool and erased the part of the second photo which was on top of the other. I used a bigger brush width for the larger areas and for the difficult areas I used small width brush to help make it accurate.
Final result –
I really like how this edit turned out on photoshop because of how well they overlap, creating the juxtaposed effect of overlaying images which is also helped through the use of taking the photos in black and white, which I preferred and is similar to Oliver Doran, so that the lighting and dark tones of the photo are similar yet slightly different to help determine the difference between them. It creatively shows two emotions which the model may have, as if they are battling with each other because she can’t decide how she feels.
3 Photos juxtaposed –
I first chose the size of the photo, which I cropped into being a small box, then I added a layer on top so that when I add the second and third photos it won’t damage the first which is on the bottom when I use the eraser.
Then I brought in the second photo, which I flipped horizontally so that the model was facing the other way, using the eraser I erased the area which I didn’t want around the photo, which was the grey background, then I added the third photo and did the same.
A sequence/grid in photography can be described as a group of photos, which can be similar or all completely different, which are lined up next to each other against a background of any solid colour. Therefore it then helps to create the idea of a storyboard, but with pictures whereas most storyboards are drawn and is used when telling/creating stories.
A storyboard –
Experimenting
These are the 6 photos which I will use:
Photos which I will use to create my sequence/grid, I haven’t edited them as I like how the lighting/filter falls onto the photo already.
Then I loaded my pictures into PowerPoint and organised them in the way I wanted them to be presented on the storyboard sequence. This is because they have a good range of organisational ways to present photos in the way in which I would like, this is shown on the right hand side.
Final outcomes –
For my final outcomes, I really liked how they both turned out as they represent the idea of a sequence/grid well which links into a storyboard. Firstly, I began with experimenting with the different options of how to organise them through PowerPoint. I decided that these two were my favourite ways because they show 2 fluid ways of how a storyboard should flow with its design to create a visual story without having to say any words, which leaves it to the viewers imagination to understand and create their own version of what is happening.
First, I brought this photo into photoshop and I didn’t edit it as I liked it the way it was with the black and white filter.
Then I brought this photo from my files, dropping it on top to create another layer on top of the previous photo in photoshop.
For the Second image, I brought down the opacity from 100% to 45% which makes it become more transparent, revealing the other image which was underneath and creates the double exposure effect which is similar to my images which I used for inspiration. Therefore it creates my final outcome of this experiment.
Final Outcome –
In my opinion, I really enjoyed creating this edit because it is very simple yet effective. This is my final edit which I created while experimenting on Adobe Photoshop with the double exposure effect. I really like how it has turned out because the image which is zoomed into her face has a small smile on it, like she is thinking about something then the other shows her looking away which can attract you into wondering what has happened as it creates quite a serious yet also mysterious atmosphere. The serious tone is created through the use of the black and white filter, as the two images work well together but create a good contrast between the darker and lighter tones which were created from the use of lighting, the butterfly and one point lighting setup, which I used during the photoshoots.
