Environmental portraites

“An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject’s usual environment, such as in their home or workplace, and typically illuminates the subject’s life and surroundings. The term is most frequently used of a genre of photography” – google

Photoshoot plan – 22/10/2021

photoshoot 1 – outside

My first photoshoot is going to be at my stepdads building site. I am going to photography my stepdad Peter who is a digger driver as he works on the construction of the new Augres house. My model will be in the cab of a digger, he will continue to work while I photography him however he will stop the machine in order for me to take the pictures. This will reduce motion blur in the camera. to eliminate blur completely I will use a tripod which will keep the camera completely still. The light will be natural and I will not be introducing any additional lighting as it will get in the way of my models work process which will ruin the natural pictures. If possible the weather will be overcast in order to provide soft lighting. this is because due to the environment my photoshoot is going to take place I think that hard lighting will reflect off the bright paint on the machine which will draw attention away from my model. I intend to take images of my model inside the cab of his machine as well as other machines on his site, as well as images of him outside of the machines.

the weather on Saturday the 16th of October works out perfectly for my photoshoot.

Photoshoot 2 – inside

For my indoor photoshoot I am going to photograph my grandfather in his lounge. He spends a lot of time in his lounge watching TV and reading the news paper. I will take photographs of him doing both these thing while sat in his chair. For the TV I will photograph him in different positions and moods depending on what he is watching. This photoshoot would be taken during the day as there will be natural light passing through the window.

Photoshoot 3 – multiple models.

For my multiple model photoshoot I am going to have two or three of my friends on a walk on the beach. I would like the weather to be windy but not raining. My models will be wearing thick coats and general winter gear. The wardrobe alongside the wind will make the images very dramatic.

Cyanotypes

Anna Atkins's cyanotypes: the first book of photographs | Natural History Museum

Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints

English botanical artist, collector and photographer Anna Atkins was the first person to illustrate a book with photographic images. Her nineteenth-century cyanotypes used light exposure and a simple chemical process to create impressively detailed blueprints of botanical specimens.

My Cyanotypes

During our day at Hamptonne we attempted to make out own cyanotypes using natural items we found near where we were working.

Jersey corn riots

Don't forget the extra Jersey public holiday this weekend! - Channel Eye

https://www.jerseyheritage.org/jersey-corn-riots

In 1767, people protested about the export of grain from the Island. Anonymous threats were made against shipowners and a law was passed the following year to keep corn in Jersey. In August 1769 the States of Jersey repealed this law, claiming that crops in the Island were plentiful. There was suspicion that this was a ploy to raise the price of wheat, which would be beneficial to the rich, many of whom had ‘rentes’ owed to them on properties that were payable in wheat.

A group of disgruntled individuals from Trinity, St Martin, St John, St Lawrence and St Saviour marched towards Town where their numbers were swelled by residents of St Helier. The group was met at the door of the Royal Court and was urged to disperse and send its demands in a more respectful manner. However, the crowd forced its way into the Court Room armed with clubs and sticks. Inside, they ordered that their demands be written down in the Court book.

Image Analysis

Technical

This image was likely taken on a camera with a fast shutter speed this is indicated by the detail around the model and the low amounts of light being picked up by the lens even with the skylight which appears to be the main source of light in the background of this image. However, in the foreground, there would have been some artificial light used. This can be seen due to the reflection off of the man’s skin which does not appear to come from the skylight. The camera would probably have been set up on a tripod to eliminate camera shake and prevent blurring.

Visual

This image has a narrow colour pallet consisting mainly of dark greys and greens. This gives the warehouse a creepy and eerie feeling that can make viewers uncomfortable. The colours also give a mysterious image to the character in the foreground. the textures in the image give a rustic and old-fashioned feel for example the rusting metal walls surrounding the man and the clouded windows in the background. the shapes visible in the image give it an industrialized feel. these shapes include the strait and sharp edges of the scaffolding and the trains.

Conceptual

This image shows the main character in the foreground to be the manager or owner of the trainyard which is suggested by the dark and ominous lighting that surrounds him. The man’s position also suggests this. his slight forward-leaning suggest that he is busy and controlling. this is also shown by the position of his hands.

Contextual

Alfred Krupp was a German steel manufacturer and inventor; the largest arms supplier of his era, which earned him the nickname “The Cannon King”. During the Second World War Krupp ensured that a continuous supply of his firm’s tanks, munitions and armaments reached the German Army. He was also responsible for moving factories from occupied countries back to Germany where they were rebuilt by the Krupp company. Krupp also built factories in German occupied countries and used the labour of over 100,000 inmates of concentration camps. This included a fuse factory inside Auschwitz. Inmates were also moved to Silesia to build a howitzer factory. It is estimated that around 70,000 of those working for Krupp died as a result of the methods employed by the guards of the camps.

Hamptonne is known in Jersey for its homemade cider which is crafted using traditional methods from the 16th century. To the east of the farm complex is the Cider Apple Orchard, which consists of apple trees chosen for their sweet, bitter and sharp flavours to provide a good balance for cider making when mixed together.

Overall the site is square in shape. It includes ranges of buildings built in different periods, arranged around two courtyards. While the farm has medieval origins, consecutive owners have made marked improvements to the living accommodation. The main buildings are therefore named after the Langlois, Hamptonne and Syvret families, who lived here between 15th and 19th centuries. To the south is Langlois House, which comprises stabling and an undercroft on the ground floor, and a parlour and bedroom on the first floor. At the south-west corner is a twin-arched stone gateway providing access to the roadway. To the south of Langlois House are the pigsties and a spring-fed pond. To the west is the Cider House or pressoir with its granite apple crusher and press; to the southern end of this row is Syvret House which consists of a kitchen, parlour, two bedrooms and a small cabinet. The House is presented as the home of a tenant farmer around 1948.
